Hoyer indeed gets the start on Monday night

Johnny Manziel will start the Browns’ second preseason game, against Washington.  Unless he doesn’t.

NFL Media had both sides covered, via a weekend report that Manziel would start and a more recent report from Ian Rapoport that Manziel wouldn’t.  Coach Mike Pettine has now announced that, indeed, Brian Hoyer will get the start.

“It’s just something right now where we are comfortable with Brian going out there to start the game,” Pettine said.  “I think it’s a little overblown as to who the starter is going to be.  The key component, as I’ve stated earlier this week, is that we are going to balance the reps. We will play it a little by ear as it goes on, we haven’t truly decided as far as the rotation but the goal is, for when we look at the stat sheet at halftime, that they both have the same amount of repetitions and hopefully they both get a good amount of work.”

Even if Pettine thinks it’s overblown, the Browns realize that people want to know.  So they issued a one-issue press release regarding the move.

The more important press release will come after Monday night’s game.  Pettine is expected to announce the Week One starter at some point before the third preseason game.

We’ll get ahead of the curve by reporting that it will be Manziel.  And that it will be Hoyer.

Manziel can’t read defenses yet. A starting QB needs to do that.

  2. stoolerz says: Aug 14, 2014 4:52 PM

I love that Pettine killed the Manziel vs RG3 hype we would have been barraged with over the weekend.

Do the right thing, Roger Goodell.

  4. johnnyjagfan says: Aug 14, 2014 4:54 PM

I don’t think this is fair to Manziel. He needs the opportunity to come out of the tunnel a starter and play with the ones. The mentality is much different coming off the bench, especially if any of the ones come out when he goes in.

  5. peefrimgar says: Aug 14, 2014 4:56 PM

This better not turn into Anderson-Quinn part 2. All Browns fans want is someone to step up and take the job.

  6. fitzhughave says: Aug 14, 2014 4:57 PM

    Free josh Gordon!

  7. rexgrossman8 says: Aug 14, 2014 4:58 PM

    …Will Rex get some PT?

  8. brownsmyteam says: Aug 14, 2014 5:02 PM

It should be Hoyer’s job to lose…. no wait win. Why don’t the Patriot’s ever have this much fun?

  9. clebrowns216 says: Aug 14, 2014 5:02 PM

    Another quarterback “competition” in Cleveland!

Clearly Brandon Weeden wasn’t just given the job last year, he totally earned it. And this years “competition” was clearly fair as well, with Hoyer getting the vast majority of first team snaps in camp and starting both preseason games.

If Hoyer is more ready to play that’s perfectly fine with me. But let’s stop calling these QB competitions. They are always tilted.

  10. olcap says: Aug 14, 2014 5:04 PM

If they’re going to trade Hoyer in the end, then I guess he’s probably glad of the attention. Otherwise, he’s probably wishing he was just Brian Hoyer of the Browns which would go pretty much unnoticed.

  11. mrfrostyj says: Aug 14, 2014 5:07 PM

NFL Network has already posted an update stating the Mike Pettines sources are wrong and that Manziel will indeed start.

Also ESPN has announced that the Monday Night Pre show has been expanded to include pre-empting the entire first quarter of Mondays game for a special called “Countdown to Johnny Football”.

  12. lifesuckshereinloserville says: Aug 14, 2014 5:10 PM

I think we need a 3rd or 4th story stating that Hoyer will indeed start on Monday. Unless he doesn’t! smh

  13. dmarado says: Aug 14, 2014 5:27 PM

Pettine made a mistake by saying he’ll name the starter before preseason week three. Kind of painted himself in a corner, IMO. Manziel needs more time, Hoyer is good enough to give them that time. The starter will be Hoyer and the Browns will win more games than they lose.

  15. We, the Steelers, support the immediate relocation of the Bills, Raiders, Vikings, Jaguars, Buccaneers, Rams, Ravens, Chargers, Colts, and Cardinals. Their current cities are an embarrassment to the NFL and the game Pittsburgh invented. #6 says: Aug 14, 2014 5:49 PM

We would suggest the Browns move out of Cleveland but they are just such a rich source of comedy. They must stay.

  16. ravenswhat says: Aug 14, 2014 5:50 PM

    Showcasing him for trades.

  17. censorshipstinks says: Aug 14, 2014 5:51 PM

What kind of an opening is that. I guess you get lazy when you get paid twice. Once by your company again to promote someone’s agenda.

  18. bmore20 says: Aug 14, 2014 6:06 PM

Who cares? It’s the second preseason game.

  19. ragnarthemagnificent says: Aug 14, 2014 6:12 PM

Is Brian Hoyer starting for the Texans Monday night?

  20. denver1983 says: Aug 14, 2014 6:14 PM

My boy Manziel will be starter week 1 in the regular season and ball out of control!

  21. schmitty2 says: Aug 14, 2014 6:21 PM

The NFL Network is OBSSESSED with this guy. If I have to listen to the chick ask Shawne Merriman one more time who he thinks should be the starter this year I might puke.

  22. ghjjf says: Aug 14, 2014 6:23 PM

Manziel hasn’t earned anything, hes just to dumb and too worried about the next party.

  23. afcdomination says: Aug 14, 2014 6:46 PM

see, what you don’t want is Manziel to fall on his face and fans to call for Hoyer. their best move is to start Hoyer, he doesn’t light it up, and the fans will be calling for Manziel. its the best move they can make. QB’s crumble under that pressure all the time.

  24. bucsorbust says: Aug 14, 2014 6:54 PM

I saw the game last week on TV. I noted how petite, and small….yet homely the Browns Cheerleaders are. Then I looked closer and noted it was actually JFF running onto the field to relieve Hoyer. Wow…what a shocker.

  25. brownsmakemecrazy says: Aug 14, 2014 6:57 PM

First of all let’s address rock head Pettine’s comments. “It really doesn’t matter who starts the game” really? Yeah every player aspires to be on the bench to start the game. This guy is a moron.

Second don’t say Johnny is gonna start the 2nd pre-season game if you have no intention from the outset to start him.

Stupid comment #2: Pettine : “we are going to give them equal reps with the ones” and what are you going to do count to 10 plays then switch to Johnny.

With how dumb this moron is its no wonder the Browns passed on Sammy Watkins even though they have no WRs worth a damn.

If I was Haslem, I’d go Haslem and fire Pettine before the opener.

If they are hellbent on starting Hoyer which it seems they are, when they start 1-6, they better start Manziel vs the Raiders in game 8.

  26. brownsmakemecrazy says: Aug 14, 2014 7:00 PM

Sorry meant when they start 0-6, they better start Johnny is Game 7.

  27. infinitig says: Aug 14, 2014 7:01 PM

I would like to see Hoyer start the season against Pittsburgh, New Orleans, and Baltimore. After the 0 – 3 start then give Manziel a chance.

  28. brownsmakemecrazy says: Aug 14, 2014 7:04 PM

I know you other Browns fans like only positive comments about the Browns, the new video screens and new scoreboards for other games look awesome.

Bout time they fixed that Stadium. Heard also they fixed the horrible sound system too.

  29. excessivedrinking says: Aug 14, 2014 7:13 PM

Yawn. Manzielmania is ridiculous. The browns will be 4 and 12 again, either way.

  30. dave90sbaby95 says: Aug 14, 2014 7:18 PM

Lol all the johnny manziel lovers on here sound so stupid. Why would you want a rookie that still hasent proven anything to start the season vs Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Baltimore. That’s 0 and 3 for the cleveland browns. Brian hoyer needs to start for this team even though there still gonna suck with him to lol

  31. pacodawg says: Aug 14, 2014 7:18 PM

didn’t John Skelton beat out Hoyer when the team won 4 games that year?

  32. pfu2 says: Aug 14, 2014 7:24 PM

Browns have a week 4 Bye. They will start Hoyer for the first 3 games & bring Johnny along slowly. If Hoyer is playing great, he keeps the starting role. If Hoyer starts the first 3 games 0-3, well it gave Manziel time…..It’s Johnny starting week 5.

    >>>>First of all let’s address rock head Pettine’s comments. “It really doesn’t matter who starts the game” really? Yeah every player aspires to be on the bench to start the game. This guy is a moron.

We’re talking about the preseason. Does it really matters who starts the 2nd preseason game? No. You’re the moron.

    >>>>>Second don’t say Johnny is gonna start the 2nd pre-season game if you have no intention from the outset to start him.
Would you mind telling us when/where Pettine ever said Manziel was going to start the second preseason game? We’ll be waiting… forever.

    >>>>>Stupid comment #2: Pettine : “we are going to give them equal reps with the ones” and what are you going to do count to 10 plays then switch to Johnny.
Coach determines 1st string will play for a quarter. A quarter is 15 minutes. After around 7 to 8 minutes of playing, Petting switches out Hoyer for Manziel. Get it now?

    >>>>>If I was Haslem, I’d go Haslem and fire Pettine before the opener.
Well, there’s something you don’t need to worry about. You’ll never be Haslam. You know why? Because you’re the type who reads a name in print 8 million times, but is still clueless on how to even spell it right. Goes to show that you don’t have a mind for details or accuracy. Which both goes to show that you’ll never be a CEO and explains the mind-numbing stupidity of your post.

  34. dave90sbaby95 says: Aug 14, 2014 7:32 PM

Let’s all be honest here if josh Gordon gets suspended, the offense is gonna suck anyway. But there defense is gonna be strong this year I think.

  35. brownsmakemecrazy says: Aug 14, 2014 7:38 PM

Pettine said Manziel was going to be the Game 2 starter in pre-season 2 weeks ago MORON.

Pre-season: Yeah makes so much sense to not start Manziel in pre-season but start him in Pittsburgh? Lol. Here’s a $1 buy a clue MORON

  36. kwjsb says: Aug 14, 2014 7:43 PM

    Does it matter?

Hoyer had a drive ending beautiful deep out dropped at the 9 by Austin, and had anther drive ending pass dropped inside the 5 by Gray

As long as the Browns lead the league in drops no QB will excel.

  37. brownsmakemecrazy says: Aug 14, 2014 7:44 PM

ESPN is gonna start broadcasting kickoff time changed to 9 pm when Johnny takes the field. Trust me no one wants to see Hoyer, a journeyman lifelong backup that couldn’t even beat out John Skelton lol. Yeah he’s good.

  38. brownsmakemecrazy says: Aug 14, 2014 7:47 PM

Pettine and Farmer screwed this year up by not taking Watkins at 4.

2-14 in 2014. They only have a chance to beat Houston and Oakland at home. The rest they will get rolled.

  39. brownsmakemecrazy says: Aug 14, 2014 7:51 PM

    Lol @TD40:

I AM STILL searching for my misspelling of Pettine’s name. Looks like the one that can’t spell is YOU MORON! Here’s a $1 go buy a clue MORON

  40. brownsmakemecrazy says: Aug 14, 2014 8:03 PM

    Week 1 Result:

    Steelers 30 Browns 7

    Week 2 Result:

    Saints 31 Browns 13

    Week 3 Result:

    Ravens 23 Browns 10

  41. dave90sbaby95 says: Aug 14, 2014 8:18 PM

@ brownsmakemecrazy are those scores you predicted with hoyer or johnny manziel at qb? And let me ask you a question how many games do you think the browns will win this year if johnny starts?

  42. dave90sbaby95 says: Aug 14, 2014 8:20 PM

And one more thing the coach never said manziel would start the second preseason game

  43. brownsmakemecrazy says: Aug 15, 2014 4:34 AM

Scores are w Hoyer starting. Yes Pettine did say Johnny would start week 2, why do you think Florio said what he said in the first line of the article.

With Johnny at starting QB, they could get to 5-11 6-10. Gives them a running dimension Hoyer doesnt have, and is much needed given the fact that Pettine and Farmer neglected the WR position in the draft because they are morons.

2-14 prediction is with Hoyer starting all 16 games.
