Kaepernick blames criticism on “stereotypes, prejudice”

Kaepernick Getty Images

49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick gets unfairly criticized, according to former NFL quarterback Chris Simms.  In a video interview for Bleacher Report, Simms loaded that assumption into a question regarding why Kaepernick believes he gets a raw deal.

Stereotypes, prejudice,” Kaepernick said.  “Whatever you want to call it.  I think between the tattoos, the way I dress, the way I talk.  People don’t think it should go together with a franchise quarterback or something that’s leading the team or representing the organization.”

But who has criticized Kaepernick other than the one columnist who made a big deal about Kaepernick’s tattoos back in 2012?  Other than his misadventures with a Miami Dolphins hat, no one has criticized Kaepernick for his clothing.  And no one has ever criticized Kaepernick based on the way he talks.

For the most part, Kaepernick has escaped widespread criticism for his performance, even though he averaged a mere 185 yards passing last year from Week Two through Week 17. (For the entire 19 regular-season and postseason games, he averaged fewer than 200 passing yards per game.)  Last year at this time, Ron Jaworski generated three days of SportsCenter churn by declaring that Kaepernick could be one of the best quarterbacks not only in the league, but in the history of the league.

In recent months, Kaepernick has been criticized for agreeing to a contract that doesn’t reflect his value to the franchise, especially if as Simms declares at the outset of the interview Kaepernick is one of the five best quarterbacks in the league.  (If every guy who has been called a top-five quarterback actually was one, there would be at least 15 top-five quarterbacks.)  But Kaepernick has been fairly criticized for doing a deal that was too team friendly.

He insisted on too little guaranteed money.  He committed for seven years, through 2020.  He agreed to annual April 1 triggers for converting money guaranteed for injury-only to fully guaranteed payments, a ridiculously late offseason deadline that gives the team the ability to explore all options via trade and free agency before re-committing to Kaepernick.  He agreed to buy, at an estimated $2 million in pre-tax earnings, a disability policy that would give the 49ers $20 million if he suffers any injury, on the field or off, that ends his career — even though the 49ers aren’t obligated to pay him for any non-football injuries.

“I think it’s a great deal for both sides,” Kaepernick told Simms.  “The NFL is a performance-based business.  So you should have to perform to earn some of your money.  At the same time, I realize that my success isn’t because of just what I do out there.  I have great teammates around me that make plays, and I want to continue to have good teammates around me, so the contract allows the organization to keep those players.”

Kaepernick could have negotiated a contract that pays him more like one of the best five quarterbacks in the league, and that also allows the team to put a competitive roster around him.  Other teams do it with franchise quarterbacks.  The contract — not the tattoos or the clothes or anything else — makes it hard to call Kaepernick a franchise quarterback.  He’ll now have to overcome the perception created by his contract by averaging a lot more than 185 yards per game passing or by delivering an on-target throw when the season depends on it.

Wow, what a crybaby. Learning well from Harbaugh. A real qb would prove them wrong instead of whining about it.

Guy tears up the packers twice and thinks he’s a top 5 quarterback. The other 28 teams got ya figured out bud, so stop playing the black card.

That said, it may be time to grow up. Stop talking like an idiot & dressing like a teenager. People treat you how you represent yourself, it’s no difference anywhere else.

  8. footballfan71 says: Aug 14, 2014 3:31 PM

His criticism is based off of his performance on the field. Win and get good reviews. Fall short, then criticized. The life of a QB.

This is the kinda stuff we get to deal with in our everyone gets a trophy society “we” have created. What a cry baby.

  10. newenglandynasty says: Aug 14, 2014 3:34 PM

It has nothing to do with the way you talk or tattoos .. U haven’t done anything in this league yet.. Is this what we do now blame everything on prejudices, stereotypes and or racism now??.. It had to do with what the hell have you accomplished in the league

  11. skell01 says: Aug 14, 2014 3:35 PM

His numbers define him. He plays on a team with a dominant defense. Could he put up 300 yards and 28 points every week if he had too? I don’t think so. I can name 10 QBs I would start a team with over Kap.

  12. nyyjetsknicks says: Aug 14, 2014 3:35 PM

Outside of the Dolphins hat situation, I haven’t really heard him being criticized. You’re a qb in the NFL, you should expect people to talk about you both positive and negative.

  13. steelerinvasion says: Aug 14, 2014 3:35 PM

Top 5? 1 read and run. If on a team without a defense bailin his ass out nobody would even be talking about him. Completely overrated!!!

  14. rho1953 says: Aug 14, 2014 3:37 PM

Me! I will step up and say it first. He looks like a punk, he acts like a punk. His gangster hats, all of it is not what I would want in my starting QB. Like it or not the QB is like your CEO on the field. He has to exude professionalism, not remind you of the wannabe gangbanger on the street corner. It is part and parcel of being the most important player on a team, looking and acting the part.

  15. thegreatgabbert says: Aug 14, 2014 3:37 PM

He gets stereotyped as a disaffected 15 year old because that is the way he comes across. PFF ranked him as the 17th best starting QB, so you can’t say he’s underpaid.

  16. wimpyburgers says: Aug 14, 2014 3:38 PM

Whatever it takes to motivate you Kaep.

Nothing rests on your performance except this year’s SuperBowl chances of the 49ers’ and his coach’s contract.

all above comments true (mostly one about being a pro QB and spotlight that goes with it)… and I generally like Kap…… as QB you are image of your org, like it or not…and those ugly tats do portray a lousy image … I thought people who did dumb things like that did it to cause reactions so don’t know how he could not expect ridicule

  19. therealraider says: Aug 14, 2014 3:38 PM

Kap’s right .. He isn’t the stereotypical drop back pocket passer most teams prefer.

  20. thegreatgabbert says: Aug 14, 2014 3:39 PM

C’mon, Kap, life isn’t that bad. High pitched giggle it off.

  21. iloveagoodnap says: Aug 14, 2014 3:40 PM

So you’re the vicitim, eh Colin?

Any criticism you get is about your play. You have 2 career games with over 300 yards. 2. That’s nothing for a starting QB in this league.

Fact of the matter is if you had been drafted by a team like Oakland, Buffalo, Cleveland, Miami, Tampa, Minnesota, New York Jets, Jacksonville, Tennessee- you wouldn’t be half the player you’re perceived to be. In fact all of those teams either have or since you were drafted have had a guy who has performed on the same level or outperformed you statistically speaking.

You benefit from having a workhorse in Frank Gore, WR’s with talent and experience, an absolutely dominant defense, and an outstanding coach. Facts are facts.

In a word, you are as overrated as they come.

  22. eddiedbangedflorioswife says: Aug 14, 2014 3:41 PM

Kaepernick is the only qb in the league who negotiates a team friendly contract and gets criticized for it.

He plays victim better than he plays QB!

  24. ahostiletakeover says: Aug 14, 2014 3:43 PM

Not really a Kaepernick fan but I recognize his talent and ability, and I have no problems with his tats or any pseudo-gangster culture he wants to immerse himself in, its a free country. The only thing I ever truly criticized him on was the whole Dolphins hat fiasco. I mean, who in professional sports really is foolish enough to think wearing another team’s hat from the same league you happen to play in is a good look for your employer? It would be like a big time SF Giants player, say Posey or Lincecum, rocking a Yankees hat. Yeah, they’re not a division or even conference rival but you are going to play AGAINST them at some point. But Kaep’s still a kid who’s gonna make dumb, harmless mistakes and I’m sure he learned to trade that Phins hat in for a Heat or Marlins one.

  25. America's Team Is God's Team says: Aug 14, 2014 3:45 PM

  29. kylexitron says: Aug 14, 2014 3:48 PM

His criticism is based on the fact that the Niners were the top of the division and failed to make anything of it. Meanwhile too short 3rd rounder Russell Wilson outplays him and takes his team to the promised land with steady play and not making the critical mistakes like Kaep does.

Save your sob story for someone who wants to hear it.

Well – now that I think about it, with harbaugh as a coach there must be a lot of SF fans who enjoy whining so ..there ya go.

Don’t pretend there is not a “franchise QB model” that people follow. Denying that is crazy. It’s written about everyday and posted about daily right here on PFT.

It’s not just black QBs who don’t fit the model, but it does include the majority of mobile QBs. Even Boss Manziel has been questioned as not fitting the model.

  37. richndc says: Aug 14, 2014 3:53 PM

  38. bucrightoff says: Aug 14, 2014 3:54 PM

I’ll keep saying it, Kaep is an elite RB and a very mediocre QB. He’s a one read and take off guy. And he averaged under 200 yards passing a game, which in todays NFL with the game severely slanted to offesne and passing in particular, is downright embarassing.

  39. puckthefatriots says: Aug 14, 2014 3:54 PM

  40. The Parisian Ballad says: Aug 14, 2014 3:55 PM

Within the hour they had changed it back to the standard player pic they always use. This is exactly what he is saying. He is easily top 10 in this league

As a Packers fan… I think most can understand why I dislike Kaep… But they have won games with him at the helm so I am not sure why he gets all this flack… stats are effected greatly depending on how the team runs their O, the Niners are a run first dump off quick type of team. I don’t have to like the man… but I do respect what he can do.

First Simms states that Kaep is a Top-5 QB, with nothing to back it up, while it’s generally accepted that he’s not even a Top-10 QB.

Then Simms states that Kaep gets unfair criticism, and Kaep does that head-back wide smile reaction to the question…but again Simms has nothing to back up that statement, while it’s generally accepted that nobody else in America has any idea what criticism Kaep has had to endure.

Is Simms gonna continue just making stuff up while hosting TNF? This could get annoying.

I do believe he is a top tier qb, but I have a hard time taking him seriously based on the image he has created for himself. If the 49ers switched to a full-on pistol offense Kaep would set new standards for the QB position, but that will never happen.

  69. 49er33 says: Aug 14, 2014 4:25 PM

Let’s not go to far to make a comparrison with media “Top 5 QB” Kaep and “second-tier QB” Alex Smith. Passing statistically Smith and Kaep were nearly identical last season Smith edging out in most catagories, and Kaep’s superior rushing ability only outrushed Smith for 93 yds.

Now Kaep is in his 3rd year in the system and still looks lost. Smith at best has ever had a year and a half in his career. Age isnt such a huge gap either Kaep due to be 27 this yr to Smiths 30. Now Kaep homers will argue that the receiving core was depleted last year but it was better than anything Smith ever had, as opposed to Smiths first year in the system in KC and McCluster and Charles being his best options w/ Bowe and Avery having the dropsies. Meanwhile Boldin was making circus catches of Kaeps passes, and the D and run game bailing him out.

No by no means am I endorsing Smith but “second tier QB” putting up “Elite QB” Kaeps numbers, simply shows how skewed things are by media.

If Hyde hangs onto that sideline Int. in the playoffs, Kaep wouldn’t have been offered that contract. Thats probably why he took this light contract. he knows, if Hyde picks him off, the Packers win. And then that Sherman fiasco doesn’t happen.

  77. cribbage12 says: Aug 14, 2014 4:43 PM

I’m a Packers fan living in NorCal. I don’t hate Kaep, and in fact like his unique personality. He surprised the Packers, which falls on Capers. But like the rookie September RHP call-up, he did fairly well the first time through the order. Now that teams have seen him some of the magic has worn off. The criticism should go towards the blowhards in the media who hinted he’s better than guys like Rodgers, and who anointed him the 2nd coming after a loaded 49er roster fell just short several years in a row. The mark of a franchise QB is how he’d do on another mid-level team. Guys like Rodgers would make that team instantly credible. Kaep simply wouldn’t–at least not yet, and maybe never.

    ————————————————–

Except that was the alleged reason for replacing Smith…Kap’s superior arm strength and deep ball ability would open the offense up and exploit having the fastest TE in NFL history flying by everybody up the seam. Instead Davis stays in to block on 60% of plays and despite a tremendous power running game and a great O-line Kap can’t execute a successful play-action pass to save his life. Just last week the most conservative offense in the league got “simplified” (aka dumbed down) for the 2nd time since Kap became the starter.

Bottom line is for the last 3 years SF had a Super Bowl roster without a Super Bowl QB. Colin Kaepernick, you are the weakest link! (and not because of tattoos or clothing).

It is clear to even casual fans that he either isn’t capable of progressing through multiple reads or the coaching staff that’s worked with him for 3 years doesn’t trust him enough to give him the option. He has tremendous physical tools to help overcome deficiencies and a very good team around him to insulate him. But eventual a QB has to win with his mind…I mean Jeff George had a cannon, too.

  80. roccopanacci says: Aug 14, 2014 4:45 PM

Although on the surface it appears like whining, he’s really just using this to motivate himself. The “everyone against me” has worked in the past for other athletes, and I think Kap can make it work for him if he progresses skill-wise.

    Just let the kid play.

This year’s Seahawks team may be one of the best the NFL has ever seen, possibly one of the most dominant teams in the history of professional sports, while the Forty-Whiners will be destroyed from within by Kraperdick who cares more about his hats than improving as a QB.

  83. frenchysgoldfish says: Aug 14, 2014 4:49 PM

The guy’s abilities as a QB may be in question, but his loyalty to an agent that signed him up before he got “famous” is not in question. The agent did not hold his end up however. Scott Smith got run over by the 49ers, and he should have called someone in with experience to help him with that contract. Some of the better run teams in the league would have given the guy a break, it’s only going to hurt in the long run the teams relationship with the player when Kaepernick wakes up next year……My 2 cents.

White QBs are the MOST stereotyped players in the NFL, followed by white WRs, and white CBs…oh wait there AREN’t any white CBs in the NFL…they are not allowed.

Slow, non-athletic, smart, weak arm, not quick, accurate, good as a backup, not worthy of hype, not worth a “2nd/3rd/4th chance (like EVERY black QB gets), etc. No one in the media EVER stands up for the white QB, he is NEVER given the “benefit of the doubt”, ever.

Therefore Colin, I have no respect for your whining when everyone in the media is shielding you from criticism.

    Kaep,

Listen. When you look the way you do, there isn’t much room for error. Nobody here will admit it but its true. When your track record was squeaky clean what was the first thing people got onto you about? A Hat. Think about it. A HAT!

Looking the way you do, you were judged before you even hit the field. This is still America after all. A predominantly white position like QB will always be criticized harsher when a black player is at the helm. When you were drafted nobody knew you would be good, therefore, didn’t waste their time nit-picking your pro day or your everyday life.

Look at Teddy Bridgewater. Mirror image. Good kid, momma’s boy, played lights out in college. No trouble what-so-ever. Not a single tattoo that I can see. No snorting coke or spraying crowds with champagne. Who is put down the most of all rookie QB’s?

I’m sure this comment wont show up and im sure 90% of the people here will thumbs it down (go figure) but unless you’re elite every single night, its going to keep coming.

  91. zack2482 says: Aug 14, 2014 5:07 PM

  98. richabbs says: Aug 14, 2014 5:16 PM

I’m not a 49er fan and I don’t think Kaepernick is one of the top 5 QBs in the league, but I have to agree that he does get criticized for things other than his performance. Yards and completions are not how you rate a QB. A QB can rack up a ton of completions and yards after a team is down by 35 at half. A QB is rated by how often he leads his team to victory and whether you want him on the field, with ball when your team is behind in the 4th Quarter of a big game.

The guys I feel are clearly ahead of Kaepernick at this time are: Brady, P. Manning, Brees, Rodgers and Roethlisberger. There are a couple of QBs (Flacco, M. Ryan, Rivers, E. Manning) who have had some success, but have not been totally consistent in their career. And then there are the young guys, like Luck, Wilson, Newton, Foles, Dalton, Griffin and Kaepernick, who have shown some ability to win, but have just not been in the league long enough to show whether they are that kind of “Franchise QB” that every team wants. Every other QB in the league has shown, over a sufficient amount of time, that they clearly aren’t a “Franchise QB.”

  99. raider8er says: Aug 14, 2014 5:17 PM

Every advanced stat already had Kaepernick as a top 10 QB last year, when his #2 and #3 WR’s were so good they were cut mid way through the season.

His numbers after Crabtree returned were top 5.

Judging by the number of comments here about his total yards passing I’m sure you don’t like total QBR as a stat, but it’s actually pretty good at showing how a QB’s play contributed to winning the game. Here is Kaepernick’s career postseason QBR compared to a few other QB’s.

    Kaepernick: 82.5
    Brady: 57.1
    Manning: 71.2
    Wilson: 59.2
    Roders: 76.3
    Brees: 63.4

The most points a losing Super Bowl team has ever scored? 31 by Kap and the Niners. And you blame the QB for losing the game. The difference between Wilson and Kap. During the Niners 2012 playoff run the defense allowed 31pts/gm, during Seattle’s 2013 run their D allowed 13pts/gm.

    Flacco, Stafford, Rivers, Roethlisberger, Kaepernick.

Then the next tier, Dalton, Wilson, Cutler, Romo, Newton, Ryan, Palmer.

That’s the three sub groups of the top half of the league. Kaepernick is top 10 but is still improving.

No, the implied message is “I’m darn near perfect and anyone who doesn’t see that is a bigot or idiot.”

  116. schmitty42 says: Aug 14, 2014 5:32 PM

Let’s compare Alex Smiths numbers vs. Kaepernick’s last year.

    Smith: 3,313 yards, 23 TD, 7INT, 89.1 Rating
    Kaepernick: 3,197 yards, 21TD, 8INT, 91.6 Rating

Wow they look the same. Until you see Kaepernick threw 100 fewer passes.

    Smith: 6.52 YPA
    Kaepernick: 7.69 YPA

    How about competition.
The best defense Smith played against (by pts/game) was the Colts at #9. With most of the schedule against the bottom third of the league.
While Kaepernick had 6 games against top 7 defenses and 9 against top 15.

So Kaepernick puts up the same stats in 80% of the opportunities against significantly superior defenses.

The amount of money he earns DOES NOT determine where he sits in the quality hierarchy of NFL starting quarterbacks. I believe Kaepernick should be commended for realizing and understanding that teammates and championships are important enough to basically say “I can survive my life with the amount of money I’m being paid doing something I love to do and earning more in a couple games than the great majority of Americans don’t earn in a freakin lifetime.

Typical Florio garbage. Tee it up for Niner-Kaepernick haters to go off on. If you watch the interview, which most of you I’m sure didn’t, Simms asks him about the “unfair” criticism and offers to Kaepernick that maybe he’s “misunderstood”. This obviously refers to the personal criticism, not to his play on the field. And so that’s how he answers it. Of course he has personal detractors. Read the comments on this article. People don’t like him personally. Why?? He answers. And he’s spot on.

As for his numbers on the field. He’s a top 10-12 QB in my opinion. Since alot of the haters here seem to be Seahawk fans (like Florio) let’s compare. Wilson’s stats are marginally better so is he great while Kaepernick is horrible? Nah.

2013 passer rating (with at least 100 attempts). Wilson 7th. Kap 10th
    QBR–Kap 7th. Wilson 13th. Passing yards. Wilson 16th. Kap 20th.

This is where Seahawkfan brings up the Super Bowl. Fine. I’m not saying Wilson is a bad QB. Using that measuring stick Wilson was #1 last year. I guess that makes Kap #3 as he lost the NFC Championship. The year before? Kap #2. Wilson. #5 to #8 I guess.

Sorry about all the facts here. Just trying to present some thoughtful remarks.

Seriously? And every single Hawks article on this site isn’t riddled with Niner hate? Considering there’s been no PED issue in Seattle for over a year and a half and Marshawn Lynch had ZERO to do with the recent BOGUS accusations spewed by the media, obviously Seattle fans are going to stay quite regarding those issues. What’s actually funny is SF fans and their constant whining and excuses, which is now apparently rubbing off on their QB.

What makes it worse is that Lizardman is a wanna be black. His birth mother is white, a nurse, and a very nice lady by all indications, even though Kaepernick won’t acknowledge her existance. No sign of his birth father. His adoptive parents and his upbringing were upper middle class white. Leave It To Beaver family. It wasn’t until he was in his 20s that the Compton gang banger image started to emerge. In a lame, suburban, white kid kind of way.

What? Are you serious? A wanna be black? Really? Talk about prejudice you trashy bigot! You and whoever supports your opinions are what is still very wrong with this country, I feel sorry for you. Please do us all a favor and do not procreate.

A far, far cry from both Cam Newton & Russell Wilson who vehemently denied that racial prejudice played a part in people’s perception of them, even in spite of the overwhelming evidence that people were indeed doing just that.

Some QBs accept responsibility and improve. Some do not. Kaepernick quite simply appears to be the latter.

  159. campcouch says: Aug 14, 2014 7:22 PM

I’m not a Niners or Kaepernick fan, could care less about them, but the guy said stereotype and prejudice. He never said anything about race, posters read that into it. Anyone who uses their body as a canvas or dresses with a urban flair is looked at as a suspect regardless of race by shallow people. Now the guy works out a contract that is performance based and gives the team some flexibility and it means he’s not a franchise QB? If he signs a $80 million guarantee, then he’s greedy and crippling the team. You folks might want to stop worshiping at the church of football and realize it’s a sport, not a moral or spiritual compass. This guy isn’t a priest or civil servant, he’s an athlete who entertains. He’s far from the “CEO” of a team, he has zero bearing on football operations. If you are a football fan, you should be a little more well rounded than just angry and ignorant to the fact that these players come from all over the country and all walks of life. It hurts, but not everyone comes from the same environment as you. How about applauding the guy’s journey to his current point in life even if you strangely detest the man on a personal level.

If anything, all your comments prove his point. He knows, we (the Faithful”Whiners” ) know that this is a make or break year. Do or do not do, there is no try. Obviously the haters will hate on us, but good God, man. Let’s see how he is doing come mid-February. He will get better, or he will end up getting cut, and probably end up getting picked up by one of your guy’s teams, and end up your starting QB. Yes. He has alot to learn. This is the season it all clicks, or he might get to wear the Dolphins hat sooner than you think. But until then, stop throwing fits about his personal style, like everybody did when Allen Iverson came into the NBA. If we cut him tomorrow, 99% of GM’s would grab him in an instant.

  172. ronfai says: Aug 14, 2014 8:16 PM

You ever consider that Kaepernick can become a stronger pocket passer with time? He has 1 full season as a starter and put up similar numbers to Alex in his 9th season. Alex was also a spread read QB in college and didn’t become an efficient passer until his 7th season with Harbaugh , even then the majority of his accuracy metrics is attributed to checking down. He can’t hit his WRs, he has never produced a 1k reciever and never will, there’s a reason he was benched and it was simply about: 1 WR completion for 13 yards in the NFCCG against Giants.

He’s getting paid very well. His performance has been below “elite” and his contract is below “elite”. Criticizing his contract for being too team friendly sounds like whining from other agents or unsolicited baloney from people who have never represented a player. Do you really think any NFL player thinks Kap should have turned that deal down and played for minimum this year?

Romo had a winning record 8-7, while playing with the worst defense in the HISTORY of the game He actually led an offense that scored MORE points on the season than that worst D in NFL history gave up. Give that dude Kapernicks D or Wilsons D and see what happens.

But Kap feels disrespected because he is a very average QB that wins because of his D. I guarantee you he would not lose a game in which he throws for 500 yards and 5 TDs. Kapernick has never played with a defense that ranked below 3rd in the NFL. Sit down and shut up young man.

  184. phigknotpig says: Aug 14, 2014 9:36 PM

Kap did not meet the astronomical expectations set for him after the 2012 SB. He is a young QB who spent last season learning how to be a pocket passer, and at times, he struggled. He’s played with his legs his whole life, and it’s gonna take time to break those habits. But the Niners still demonstrated success, finishing 12-4 and going to a third NFC Championship. Kap’s ceiling is through the roof, he has physical gifts that no one can teach, and he’s only going to get better as he learns to play in the NFL.

And I’m not sure about this one, but his low passing average may have something to do with playing with one of the top rushing offenses in the league.

I disagree with most of the points here (obviously), but this one most of all: How can you criticize Kap for underperforming, AND for signing a team-friendly contract? If he underperformed (which is dubious), isn’t this the sort of contract you’d expect?

  207. kevpft says: Aug 14, 2014 11:49 PM

To be generous to the guy, QB is like pro tennis or pro golf – there are some pretty tight standards. When an Andre Agassi or John Daly shows up, it’s going to rankle feathers, and the only way to quiet things down is to win and win big. And even then, the rabble is only one stumble from starting up again.

Also, if you’re going to critique the contract, shouldn’t that be on his agent? If CK bought a line from the team, why didn’t he get a better line from his agent?

Now, to be less generous. Look, you have showy/pretentious tattoos, you kiss your own biceps and strut when you score, you openly mock another QB’s celebration, and you get handed a starting job when your successful predecessor gets injured – and then only advance one game further in two years of effort. You haven’t achieved much and teams are starting to catch on to you. You’re going to get criticized, a lot. Heck, Aaron frickin’ Rodgers, Super Bowl winner, gets torn to bits on your average comment board. CK has a way to go.

  208. hess97 says: Aug 15, 2014 12:00 AM

I disagree that nobody calls out Kaepernick for his personal style. I’ve heard that exact criticism both locally and nationally. I listen to a lot of talk radio, and have heard the opinion voiced that a franchise quarterback needs to be clean cut, just like Manning.

Before hearing Colin’s remarks, I had the same thought. The subtext of those comments sound a lot like the old attitude about Quarterbacks before Doug Williams and Warren Moon accomplished what they did.

As a fan, I don’t care what the players wear. All that matters is their effort on the field and in the classroom. You can see, guys like Kap, Bowman, and Gore put their heart and soul into becoming winners. Certain demographics of fans misinterpret what these pros are about, by judging their personal clothing style. Class is about attitude and effort. Has absolutely nothing to do with clothing, or what people drive or what people live in or what kind of vacations people take.

I bet a lot of you are big Russell Wilson fans.

He has 3 300 yard games in his career in 9 more starts. Wilson has also averaged 200ypg for his career.

kaepernick has zero come from behind wins… RW has 8…

like herm edwards said, “don’t press send!” just shut up and play to your best. as a 49ers fan, i wish the 49ers would order him to stop talking to the media, who will re-concoct and reconstitute everything that’s said, to create a stir. just learn, produce, and win, kaepernick; this is a year of big expectations on you…go 49ers!

LOLWUT? He was down by 17 to the Falcons in the NFC Championship game.

5 4th quarter comebacks, 6 game winning drives.

Well tattoos do hurt but apparently peoples words are what really hurts Colin. He’s such a tool bag.

  229. realitycheckbaby says: Aug 16, 2014 9:47 AM

People don’t like him because he’s a punk, much the same reason they don’t like your coach.

Kissing your bicep and mocking other QB’s TD celebration proves it.

But the presser after the NFCCG really drove it home.

  230. philtration says: Aug 17, 2014 12:14 PM

Meanwhile Jay Cutler does not give a damn about what you or the media says about him and does not carry himself like a 15 year old blaming the rest of the world for his life.

  231. punksinplay says: Aug 17, 2014 1:56 PM

What Kapernick doesn’t understand is that people want an NFL QB to carry himself in a mature, responsible manner. Kapernick still acts and dresses like a junior in high school. The dude can play but he looks ridiculous in his post game pressers.

When I think of Colin Keapernick I don’t think about the way he talks, I don’t think about his tattoos, and I don’t even think about him kissing his biceps muscle after he makes a play.

I think of an extremely, naturally gifted athlete who also has the talent to be a very good QB. He was in the superbowl against The Ravens, down by a ton of points and then wham, they are back in the game.

The criticism stems from his lack of production in a follow up year. Joe Flacco got the SAME type of criticism except a lot more of it and I do believe some of that was rather unfair. Yes his performance was down, but he had lots of turnover on the offense and defense that won the Superbowl. His main targets were all gone for most of the year, 3/5 of his offensive line was completely different thanks to injuries. And there was absolutely no ground game.

Still, I don’t really know what Kaepernick is on about, but I am not exactly walking a mile in his shoes. Perhaps there are some local reports in papers I just haven’t been reading?

the niners not only left their heart’s in san fransico, but their game too.
Santa Clara is going to have a loooooong season.

Kap is a big crybaby. Act like a man and you’ll be treated like one.

A real qb would prove them wrong instead of choking & going home every year.

  237. ceehawkfan says: Aug 18, 2014 8:39 PM

Hey Kaep, name one Seahawk fan that doesn’t like RUSSELL WILSON…cause I can name a bunch of 9ers that don’t like you…even your own fans criticize you :)

  238. johnnyb612 says: Aug 18, 2014 9:13 PM

Of course he does… Of course he does…

  239. tripods68 says: Aug 18, 2014 9:51 PM

I sense Florio don’t like Jim Harbaugh and Colin Kaepernick as tandem much. Haters will always Hate! KAP uses motivation to favorite Haters and prove em wrong, not just about the way he looks, dress, and wear Beats headphone standing on the podium. He doesn’t need to conform to traditional line of franchise QB look in NFL. Kap just have to be KAP! Keep being KAP! KAP!

  240. provguard says: Aug 18, 2014 11:53 PM

Colin, it is called growing up. Trying to look like a gangsta is for the young guys.

  241. 1greatusername says: Aug 19, 2014 11:44 AM

I doubt his employing organization wants its QB to behave and dress like a teenage gangster wannabe. I’m pretty sure that’s the opinion that really counts – not mine or yours or Simms’ or the media’s (even though they sure try hard to be influential).

  242. tnfire69 says: Aug 19, 2014 7:46 PM

If you are going to be the leader then you take everything that comes with it. I mean why say anything when its just going to bring more criticism.

  243. bmd2099 says: Aug 20, 2014 9:17 PM

Kaepernick helps prove the most important stereotype, he’s a whiner.

  244. ceehawkfan says: Aug 21, 2014 12:54 AM

Take a tip from Russell…work on your game. Seems like you spent just as much time on your tattoos as Russell does in the film room. How many tattoos does he have? 0
How many do you have? GAWD KNOWS!

  245. exxxplosivo says: Aug 21, 2014 12:30 PM

You guys realize that the Niners crushed the league in rushing and defense last year right? When you have a combination of top 5 rushing offense and top 5 defense…guess what? You aren’t gonna be passing the ball a whole lot. Does anybody here actually watch Niners games? The team was 12-4 and was 1 play away from winning the NFC championship last year and 1 play away from winning the Super Bowl the year before that.

Kap does exactly what he needs to do to help the Niners win games. The Niners run the ball down your throat all day. All day. How many other QB’s do you see averaging 185 yards per game with a 12-4 record?

Y’all busters just wish you had him on your team. Niners all the way
