Dolphins bring in a new kicker to push Caleb Sturgis

AP

The Dolphins are apparently still committed to kicker Caleb Sturgis, after drafting him in the fifth round last year.

But they made a change behind him on the depth chart today, signing kicker John Potter to replace Danny Hrapmann the day after Hrapmann missed two field goals in practice.

Sturgis has been sidelined with a groin injury lately but returned to practice recently. He was 26-of-34 on field goals last year, so it’s not as if he’s untouchable.

Potter entered the league with the Bills in 2012, a seventh-round pick. He’s also spent time with Washington and Detroit.

  1. The funny thing is, it’s the Bills who got the better deal when the Dolphins let Carpenter go for Sturgis. Carpenter has been nothing but excellent, while Sturgis is just average.

The Dolphins let Dan Carpenter go due to cap purposes. Probably would have held onto him for longer but he had an average 2012 season.

I guess now I would rather have Carpenter, but it is what it is.

  3. Carpenter had a bad 2012 Year and literally cost the Phins 2 Games. He was not worth the Contract price. Sturgis missed some critical FG’s too, but keep in mind they were beyond 51 yards. I hope he is better this yea,r as the Dolphins are always in close games, but sitting injured we have to sign someone to kick for these meaningless games. Plus competition is good for everyone.

  4. This is another case of Ross being too cheap to keep a good kicker. Carpenter was getting costly and management had the lame excuse that Carpenter, not the remainder of the lame team, cost us a game or two. This is the same guy that Sporano was cheering on for several seasons. Then we bring in an undersized rookie, wasted draft pick, who has a poor record past the 40. Now that Sturgis has groin problems because he is too little a nd weak to hit the long ones, we are on a fishing trip looking for another Dan Carpenter at a Sturgis price.

We all know how bad this team has been. It will not improve until you retain the best talent at whatever the cost. Remember, we are fans, noit general managers. I don’t care what they spend. I want to win!

  5. Let’s remember that when their special teams coordinator was at Rutgers they never ever had good kickers. Maybe it’s him and not the owner. Darin Rizzoli has got to do a better job working with them. He may not be a good kicking coach.

  6. Sturgis = another former Miami Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland bust

Jeff Ireland a former kicker himself in college decided to not sign Carpenter in favor of Sturgis.

Sturgis was a 5th round draft pick. You might want to educate yourself on what is and isn’t a bust. A 1st to 2nd round pick, maybe 3rd a round pick? A fifth round pick? Naw.
