Michael Sam drops Matt Flynn for first NFL sack

Michael Sam, Thomas Welch AP

St. Louis Rams defensive end said he believed he could pay in the NFL after getting his first game experience last week against the New Orleans Saints.

Now he has his first sack to further those beliefs.

With the Green Bay Packers facing a 3rd and 19 at the Rams’ 21-yard line, Sam came off the left end and tracked down quarterback Matt Flynn as Flynn was strafing out of the pocket to buy time. Flynn lost 10 yards on the play and the Packers had to settle for a 49-yard Mason Crosby field goal after having a 1st and 10 from the Rams’ 11.

Sam made just a solo tackle in his preseason debut last week against the Saints. He has two tackles and a sack with four minutes left to play against the Packers.

Are we seriously going to hear about every little thing this guy does?

He has to pay to be in the NFL, wow

    Matt Flynn.

He steps in and he instantly had more impact than Robert Quinn or Chris Long, who have had one fluky season each. Do they even play defense in St Louis?

    Vs a backup Oline. Impressive.

I have a feeling that we won’t be getting updates on Sam’s first penalty, missed tackle, or blown coverage.

Better get all the page views you can get now, because he’s not making the team

  8. gargamelsmentor says: Aug 16, 2014 7:14 PM

The real question is….how well does he cover on kickoffs? That’s where his contributions will be made in the regular season.

  9. jjv2012 says: Aug 16, 2014 7:15 PM

UDFA Jayrone Elliot for the Packers had 3 sacks in the span of 4 plays, one of them causing a fumble. Why not devote a news update about him?

  10. gooboy6 says: Aug 16, 2014 7:16 PM

Can’t wait to see the tear-jerking press conf after the game

I could care less about someone’s lifestyle. Good for him and progress but how many other 7th rounders would be highlighted for making a sack in preseason!

This is akin to giving a kid a trophy for 11th place. Big Deal!

Hey , you guys are slacking ; we want to hear about the first time he took a sip of Gatorade , the first time he taped up,his ankles , etc.

I watched the game, if Sam plays in this league, it wouldn’t be for the Rams, they have too many good DL in front of him. Unless they decide to carry 9 DL on the roster because they are scared of the PC police. That’s always a possibility.

  15. axespray says: Aug 16, 2014 7:23 PM

How about that guy that sacked the ram’s QB 3 times in a single drive?

    Matt Flynn

It’s almost like sexual orientation has zero to do with football ability. Who knew?

Gay people will be playing pro sports, they’ll be getting married and the world will go on.

Yes, you’re an atheist and a leftist. We get it, we get it.

Heterosexual rookie free agent OLB Kasim Edebali had his first NFL sack last night. I must have missed his front page story.

  24. shawtiernan says: Aug 16, 2014 7:48 PM

I’m happy that Sam is getting his shot and equally happy he was drafted, but in a world where I can’t read from my favorite sports site about any Bronco not on the first team, the constant updates on Sam are kind of annoying.

The fact that there are numerous guys on his own depth chart making more plays in front of him with less press has got to be why so many teams chose not to give him shot. It has nothing to do with his sexuality. It’s the exact same reason why Tebow can’t get a job.

I would suggest that you either significantly improve your coverage of ALL 3rd teamers (which I would enjoy), or start giving Sam the respect he deserves by treating him like any other football player.

Sam was awesome. He reminded me of Carl Eller.

An UDFA on the Chargers got his first sack. Can we get an article?

I love how all the whiners come here and say, “I could care less!” and “why are we hearing about him?” blah blah blah

If you don’t care so much then why are you posting here?

(Psst… little secret… every time you post something here, this article blows up just a little more)

  29. jerlee7 says: Aug 16, 2014 9:18 PM

Sam actually has no stats because he has never officially played in the NFL. SIGNED THOUSANDS OF OTHER PEOPLE WHO PLAYED IN THE PRESEASON AND WERE CUT.

  30. voiceofreasonsays says: Aug 16, 2014 9:25 PM

And yet we hear NOTHING about the deaf player on the Seahawks, who, you know, has a ring?

  39. ncarolinarn7 says: Aug 17, 2014 12:13 PM

Yea too it was against the 3rd level players most likely to be cut.

  40. zdravit says: Aug 17, 2014 3:41 PM

That wasn’t his first sack. Far from it.

  41. 34defense2014 says: Aug 17, 2014 6:13 PM

  42. rcali says: Aug 17, 2014 6:25 PM

For those of you who think he is not making the team you are not paying attention to the NFL’s master plan.

  43. tangovader says: Aug 18, 2014 10:52 AM

It’s news because he’s the first openly gay player. It would be news if the first female player got her first sack, or the first armless player, or the first 70 year-old player. And the coverage is hardly over the top. Bon Jovi, Chip Kelly and Johnny Football get far more attention and only one of those guys actually PLAY the game.
