With Sam Baker out, Jake Matthews goes to the left side

Matthews

The Falcons knew what they were doing when they pounced on tackle Jake Matthews. While placed initially on the right side given the presence of veteran Sam Baker, they knew that Matthews eventually would become the team’s left tackle.

“Eventually” has accelerated, thanks to a season-ending injury suffered by incumbent left tackle Sam Baker. Per a league source, the right patellar tendon in Baker’s knee has indeed ruptured, and Baker will be out for the year.

In turn, Matthews will move to left tackle. Which creates a void on the right side.

Look for Lamar Holmes, a 15-game starter in 2013, to have the inside track on the right side. When healthy, former Bears first-rounder Gabe Carimi could compete for reps. Ryan Schraeder, who appeared in 13 games with four starts last year, also is in the mix.
