With Sam Baker out, Jake Matthews goes to the left side

The Falcons knew what they were doing when they pounced on tackle Jake Matthews.  While placed initially on the right side given the presence of veteran Sam Baker, they knew that Matthews eventually would become the team’s left tackle.

“Eventually” has accelerated, thanks to a season-ending injury suffered by incumbent left tackle Sam Baker.  Per a league source, the right patellar tendon in Baker’s knee has indeed ruptured, and Baker will be out for the year.

In turn, Matthews will move to left tackle.  Which creates a void on the right side.

Look for Lamar Holmes, a 15-game starter in 2013, to have the inside track on the right side.  When healthy, former Bears first-rounder Gabe Carimi could compete for reps.  Ryan Schraeder, who appeared in 13 games with four starts last year, also is in the mix.

That’s great, but what does Jake Matthews think about the Bon Jovi bid for the Bills?

Rubbing my crystal ball good & hard tonight it reveals that neither Lamar Holmes, Gabe Carimi, & youngster Ryan Schraeder will get the start at RT for game 1. That will go to veteran…OOOOOOPPS! The huge ball broke before the final answer was revealed. Back to the New Age Shoppe tomorrow.

Baker has too often been a reliability more than an asset. Never understood lengthening his contract last year. I hope he’ll be okay, but this could be a career-ending injury. Good thing they drafted Matthews but he’ll have growing pains this year.

Both Baker and Weatherspoon will never suit up a Falcons again. Wish them the best of luck and speedy recoveries.

I doubt Holmes starts. He has been running with the threes. Also wouldn’t be shocked if they sign a vet tackle.

This team is pretty good and I believe had a weird bad off-year, but I have to say, looks like they are in trouble again if they can’t fix the OLine. Just ask any Dolphin’s Fan about how it affects your success. Arguably the White & Jones best WR tandem with a Stud QB on his back is not going to work.
