Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel each got their shots with Cleveland’s first-team offense on Monday night at Washington.
Neither stood out.
Hoyer was 2-of-6 for 16 yards in the first half, failing to hit open receivers on multiple occasions. Most notably, he threw behind slot receiver Andrew Hawkins on a potential second quarter TD pass.
Manziel was 2-of-7 for 29 yards in the first 30 minutes. On his best pass of the half, he rolled right and hit Hawkins for 12 yards. But Manziel too struggled with accuracy, and he had trouble with Washington’s pass rush pressure.
Browns coach Mike Pettine is expected to pick a starting quarterback on Tuesday. The advantage to the timing of such a move? The starter will then get the lion’s share of the first-team reps. And with less than three weeks until the regular season opener at Pittsburgh, the Browns’ first-team offense is very much a work-in-progress.
