Johnny Manziel flashes middle finger after incompletion

A fine could be coming for Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel.

After he threw an incomplete pass near the Washington sideline late in the third quarter, Manziel appeared to extend his middle finger up for the Washington bench to see as he ran back to the Cleveland huddle.

As NFL writer Aaron Nagler pointed out on Twitter, the NFL fined Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk $10,000 for giving the finger to the Green Bay bench — something Hawk reportedly said was a joke.

Also, the league fined the late Bud Adams $250,000 for flashing both middle fingers in 2009.

Given that the traction this story has already received on social media, Manziel might have a hard time skating on this one.

In non-gesture related news, Manziel threw his first NFL TD pass early in the fourth quarter on a short toss to tailback Dion Lewis, who took it in for an eight-yard score.

This guy needs to grow up fast. He has done nothing yet in the NFL. A nice fat fine might catch his attention.

As much as I hope Manziel or Hoyer would be the answer for the Browns, they’re not. Manziel doesn’t have the it like Bridgewater. Watching the qb’s play you could tell if he’s got it or not. Manziel back up qb at best.

Browns will be trading or drafting for a qb in couple of years again and there goes another playoff drought.

I’m sorry but I find that GIF hilarious. I can see the internet having fun with it already. The way he casually throws it up for those behind him to see.

I mean shouldn’t of done it buuut I enjoyed it. Then again I also enjoyed the late Bud Adam’s double bird.

Nobody could ever accuse Teddy Bridgewater of flashing his middle finger at anybody. You would need a telescope just to see those dainty little digits.

  16. DaveKShape says: Aug 18, 2014 10:55 PM

Much like the dollar bill incident, this will be swept under the rug. Manziel is a good news generator for the league, therefore this is acceptable.

It’s pretty vulgar in the stands at all sporting venues so why would the players be held to some higher standard than anyone else? Because they get paid more? That’s a personal choice by a private entity. I don’t use them as a representation of my community, 99% of them are not from the area, they just work there so I have no personal attachment to them. Technically it’s a pass so it should be called a passing TD. But it’s really more like a running play.

27 passes is pretty comparable to a full NFL game and he only has 128 yards.

He’s also generally had really good field position due to good returns and defensive turnovers.

Still taking too many unnecessary hits and is having trouble with pressure.

Both QB’s looked bad today. Shaw actually by far looked the best, but it was scrub time.

He’ll start Week 1….have a few up’s and alot of down’s the rest of the way….will be benched by or before the half-way point of next season….and will be released by the end of said season….then, will spend the rest of his flame-out career trying to find a back-up job before being labeled a ‘camp arm’.

And thus we’ll be able to add yet another name to the long list of QB fails in Cleveland. Probably the coach, too. And, the owner sells the team after 5 brutal seasons; or rather 5 more brutal seasons.

Johnny Manziel completed just 44% of his passes and contributed to his team’s loss. He also disgraced this great American sport by publicly displaying an offensive gesture to the opponent that beat him. All as a rookie first round draft pick QB.

I haven’t seen much in a few months, but so far, I am thinking he’s not a very good pro football player, not really a very good guy either. He probably doesn’t deserve the opportunities he’s gotten thus far.

How old is Johnny Football, 5 years old perhaps? Because this is the move of a 5-year old throwing a temper tantrum. If he can’t take some mild ribbing in preseason, how can he be expected to handle the real competition week 1 against the Steelers?

He can’t. He clearly isn’t emotionally or mentally ready to play NFL football and may never be. He has a lot of growing up to do and a dysfunctional team like the Browns is perhaps the worst place for him to be and prosper. Johnny Football really needs a drill sargeant or a psychiatrist at this point, because he clearly can’t take being taunted and is psychologically very fragile at this point.

If Tebow had to be a bust I really hope this guy is too. I know Tebow was very loud about his faith which is fine but I rather someone be like that than the next Matt Leinart with an addition to a lot attitude problems. A much smaller point which will probably go unnoticed by many is Connor Shaw (Who has a pretty good story) probably wont make the roster but did go 8/9 and threw a TD.

  272. fwippel says: Aug 19, 2014 8:38 AM

Connor Shaw was the best Browns QB on the field last night. Yeah, even though it was late in the game, and third and fourth stringers were in, Shaw’s passes were accurate, whether throwing from the pocket, or on the run. He showed far better command of the offense than either Hoyer or Manziel.

The only reason Shaw isn’t being considered for more playing time? I know the Browns are set going forward with Manziel as their “franchise” QB. But at some point, good play has to count for something. If the Browns cut Shaw in favor of Rex Grossman, they’ll get what they deserve.

  273. bassplucker says: Aug 19, 2014 8:50 AM

I sure didn’t see an NFL QB out there in Manziel last night. I saw a guy that was flustered, confused, and out of shape. And really small.

His whole schtick of just running around and heaving it up to a 6’5 WR isn’t going to play at this level. The pass rushers are too fast and the DBs are too good for that to be a viable strategy, yet it seems to be all he brings to the table.

  274. mogogo1 says: Aug 19, 2014 8:51 AM

And just imagine what he must be like if you’re a coach trying to teach him something…or a teammate. There are going to be some amazing stories about this guy when he’s done in Cleveland, I’m sure. Should make for a great 30 for 30. And at this rate that might be coming out within the next year or so.

    This is my thoughts on the game and post-game commentary with a slight paraphrase of the movie Ratatouillie;

Anton Ego: After reading a lot of overheated puffery about your new quarterback, you know what I’m craving? A little perspective. That’s it. I’d like some fresh, clear, well seasoned perspective. Can you suggest a good wine to go with that?

    Mustafa:With what, sir?

Anton Ego: Perspective. Fresh out, I take it?

    Mustafa: I am, uh…

Anton Ego: Very well. Since you’re all out of perspective and no one else seems to have it in this BLOODY TOWN, I’ll make you a deal. You provide the quarterback, I’ll provide the perspective, which would go nicely with a bottle of Cheval Blanc 1947.

This was just a common emotional reaction from a highly competitive player who has fire in his belly. It only shows his intense will to win, and that he will let nothing stand in his way.

I would much rather have an intense competitor out there than some drone, as quite a few NFL QBs seem to be.

Johnny is serving notice to the league that he’s here, he’s ready to win, and he’s here to stay.

  281. steelcurtainn says: Aug 19, 2014 9:17 AM

That middle finger won’t fly in Pittsburgh. James Harrison will come out of the stands and close line him.

  282. kastout11 says: Aug 19, 2014 9:19 AM

Big deal. Who cares? They need to find a QB who can win them some games. With the talent they have, they are ready to win, if they can get a QB. I wouldn’t be surprised, it they gave Howie Roseman a call in Philly to inquire about the availability of Mark Sanchez, although if Foles would go down, I don’t think anyone in Philly trusts Barkley.

  283. GettingNoRespect says: Aug 19, 2014 9:23 AM

I did notice on this morning’s sports highlights, he tried to scramble outside, turn on that Johnny Football speed, and cut the corner. While the speed was impressive, it only got him one yard, where it probably would have been a 12 yard run in college. I was wondering if that has settled in his brain yet. I doubt it.

This kid is lucky he wasn’t drafted by Jerry Jones. In the NFC East, the stuff he received from Skins fans and players will seem like a love letter, compared to playing in Philly.

This guy showed a big weakness, in that taunts get to him, and that fans can get to him. And once a weakness is found in the nfl, it is ruthlessly exploited.

Maybe if everyone would stop being so outraged at every thing he does, the media attention would stop?

No? Well when you get results like this, accept that you are giving the media even more incentive to push out more Manziel articles.

Also, about 70 percent of the posts in this thread sound like they were made by middle schoolers. Manziel looks like an elder statesman compared to some of the posters, and that’s a tall order.

  308. nyneal says: Aug 19, 2014 11:44 AM

With the definite decline of values and morals in this country over the last 50 years or so, I find it troubling that so many people defend this little punk for actions like this.
The thing which bothers me is kids watch these guys, too. It’s not just adults. My wife teaches 5th grade and the things kids say to each other and to adults now are just unbelievable.
It they did that when I was growing up in the 50’s and 60’s, they’d have gotten what was coming to them by their teachers, and then their parents.
Manziel is typical of so many modern day celebrities. He is an immature, arrogant, snob who has no clue about being a responsible adult.
I rarely ever want any player in the NFL to fail. But I am hoping this little twerp is the biggest bust in NFL history.
One more thing. I think he gets a pass because he’s white. If he were black and did some of the things he’s done, he’d have been ripped a lot more than he has been. And I’m white, in case you’re wondering. But the truth is the truth and that’s the truth as I see it.
