Steelers extend Marcus Gilbert through 2019

The Steelers have had a hard time finding good offensive linemen in recent years.  When they do, they hold on to them.

The latest lineman onto whom the Steelers will be holding is right tackle Marcus Gilbert.  The team has announced that Gilbert is under contract through 2019.  Per a league source, Gilbert signed a five-year, $30 million extension.

“It means I am locked in hopefully as a Steeler for the rest of my career,” Gilbert told the team’s official website.  “It’s a blessing to work for a great organization, the Rooney family, Kevin Colbert and Coach [Mike] Tomlin.  Just to be around in Pittsburgh, where they show you so much love, I couldn’t be happier and in a better place.”

Gilbert, a second-round pick in 2011, has started 34 of 35 games in three seasons with the Steelers.  With Maurkice Pouncey also under contract through 2019, it puts 40 percent of the starting offensive line under contract.

This will be a sweet division title.

P.S. The Ravens defense is suspect. And their fans know it.

Top 3 List of most NFL Championships (including Superbowls)

    #1) Green Bay Packers : 13

    #2) Chicago Bears : 9

    #3) New York Giants : 8

    Steelers need to learn respect.

Great move. Top-5 linemen in the league right now.

Calvinthegreat, I know you love ancient history, but we — Steeler Nation — like to focus on the SUPER BOWL ERA. You know, the only era that matters. 6 is unmatched and casts a shadow over the entire league. You all shiver. We are the standard for success. The three rivers are made from the tears of our opponents and we built boats. We built many boats. We built this league with our blood and sweat. The game was played in our name.

The Packers, Bears, and Giants are all SOFT teams that contributed to the devaluation of the game. You are the ones who are and have been ruining it. That’s why we have been forced to create our OWN league next year after Lombardi Noll Trophy #7. SFL 2015. Everyone who cares about the integrity of the game, not its bottom line will follow us. I know where you’ll be.

He’ll earn his pay blocking for Ben who consistently holds the ball for 5-7 seconds on pass plays. If superben would study more film he could make quicker decisions like an elite qb (Brady, manning). Congrats Marcus, who knows this might be the last year you block for Mr. Indecisive.

    Vikings > Steelers.

  13. jmblosser82 says: Aug 19, 2014 5:26 PM

calvinthegreat82, comparing nfl titles to superbowls is like comparing apples to oranges. My hat is off to the Pack and G-men for winning multiples in both eras but this is the era of the SB and in this era the Steelers are king. Plus this article has no mention of titles, it was you, and that just means you are jealous of the success.

  14. aceakking says: Aug 19, 2014 5:26 PM

If Marcus Gilbert is extended through 2019, why wasn’t Bill Leavy extended???

He is locked into the Steelers.
But the Steelers are not locked into him.

  24. bucnblood says: Aug 19, 2014 5:42 PM

    6 Lombardi’s>1 nfl title
Peterson today is not better then Bell.
Patterson can’t hold Browns jock strap.
Steelers def much better then the Vikings.
Zimmer has yet to HC a regular season game.
Bridgewater hasn’t beat out Cassel so he can’t be better then the QB who’s been to 3 SBs.
The Vikings beat the Steelers in London, big deal, Steelers had a better NFCN record then them. The Vikings will be in the basement yet again while the Steelers make another playoff run.

  35. udontknowjaq says: Aug 19, 2014 6:04 PM

What does a championship trophy look like before the Super Bowl? Modern day football is about 28 teams or more in the SB era 2 conferences, playoffs, more games & the forward pass. Since then The Steelers have the most wins in almost all categories & only 7 losing seasons in 40+ years.. Respect that & Steelers Est 1933! GB, & Chi have there championships from back then before the pass and all & there is respect.

  36. stillers213 says: Aug 19, 2014 6:05 PM

Most trolls around here are entertaining in their own special way. However, I just don’t get Viking trolls that regurgitate their rhetoric every single article; especially when you consider that the Vikes have done next to nothing since losing to the Steelers in the Superbowl more than 40 years ago. (kind of hurts, doesn’t it?)
I almost feel sorry for you clowns.

  41. realitycheckbaby says: Aug 19, 2014 6:36 PM

    Big mistake.

Levy is more valuable than Gilbert.

What has Gilbert ever handed the Steelers?

  42. poorcalvinisstuckonthecrappylions says: Aug 19, 2014 6:41 PM

Steelers have less NFL CHAMPIONSHIPS then (3) other NFL teams. FACT. Overlooking a championship because the NFL decided to call it the Superbowl for Marketing purposes (which worked perfectly, marketing scheme genius) is absolutely 100% an excuse.

Saying the Championships before the Superbowl is invited is absurd.

That is like saying Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth are not (2) of the greatest baseball players of all time.

    or..

Lombardi and Halas didn’t invent and create the game and have the deepest roots for the NFL we have today.

Get over yourselves Steeler fans, most NFL fans respect the Steelers for their past team history(Me being one of them)as they do the Bears and Packers, but the few DEFENSIVE Steeler fellas on here are ruining your reputation as respectable NFL fans.

Don’t overlook the history of the sport you have a great deal of passion and love for…..

  45. revelation123 says: Aug 19, 2014 6:48 PM

The Steelers naturally don’t have as many overall Championships as Green Bay or Chicago does, but why a Lions fan would bring that up in the first place on a Steelers thread, who knows. Trying to make Packers/Bears fans look bad I guess because his own team has less Championships than any of the teams mentioned above; including the Steelers.

  46. ravens2xworldchamps says: Aug 19, 2014 6:50 PM

  50. besploge says: Aug 19, 2014 7:01 PM

Gilbert is okay, and thats not that much money for a RT. they could do a lot worse.

Seahawks fans should stop whining about Bill Leavy. There were some bad calls, but it was their defense’s inability to stop Willie Parker’s 75 yard run and the TD pass that Randle El tossed to Ward that did them in. How embarrassing for them. They didn’t deserve to win that game. They now have a legit title after last year’s SB debacle, any way.

  51. Smash-Mouth.com says: Aug 19, 2014 7:47 PM

On the face of it, it does seem like a lot of money for Gilbert.

One thing to keep in mind here, however, is that Gilbert has had a different o-line coach every season he’s been with the Steelers. The situation has been anything but stable.

From what I understand, he had made tremendous strides so far under Mike Munchak. Assuming Munchak sticks around for a few years, Gilbert could develop into a very solid right tackle.

Realizing he’s not an “elite” OT, his durability is why I think he deserves an extension. Pouncey on the other hand can get stuffed for all I care.
