Bengals reach a new deal with Vontaze Burfict

Vontaze Burfict, Paul Guenther AP

With Andy Dalton taken care of, the Bengals are moving on to other business.

The next in line is weakside linebacker, who has agreed to a multi-year extension with the team, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN. Adam Schefter says it’s a four-year, $20 million deal, with $7.6 million this year.

He was entering the final year of his contract, but would have been a restricted free agent next year.

While many were scared off of Burfict before the draft because of off-field concerns, the Bengals rolled the dice and found a consistent performer after signing him as an undrafted rookie in 2012.

Now he’s been rewarded, and they continue to lock up the core of a good, young team.

It’s good that the Bengals are revealing how they are rewarding Vontaze Burfict. The Steelers have yet to reveal how they rewarded Bill Leavy after SB40.

When you’re an undrafted FA, and after just two seasons you have moved up the extension pecking order to 2nd behind the starting QB… yeah, I’d call that redemption.

    BEAST, deserves it. WHO DEY

Smart signing. This guy is going to eat Johnny Manziel for breakfast.

  8. seatownballers says: Aug 20, 2014 5:37 PM

Can’t believe this guy is clean off the field, any many manyothers aren’t. Extension deserved. Congrats

Even Ozzie Newsome is in awe of how good this deal is!

  11. pskotte says: Aug 20, 2014 5:41 PM

Vontaze is a beast, good for him to get a well-deserved contract. Good move for the Bengals, too. My question is: who replaced Mike Brown with a pod clone that makes savvy decisions?

  12. getyourownname says: Aug 20, 2014 5:42 PM

So far, Bengals look really smart on this signing.

And if he has addressed those pre-draft issues that everyone had reason to wary of, then good for him, too.

  13. ajgreenhof says: Aug 20, 2014 5:42 PM

    Awwwww yeah!

  14. thestrategyexpert says: Aug 20, 2014 5:44 PM

    “Burfict is Purfict!”

And one of my favorite players in the whole league, gotta love the ones that everybody bets against and then show them respect when they step up and stick it to the doubters!

Congrats on the mo’ne! Yeah I like to say and spell “money” differently now. :)

  15. bigd7387 says: Aug 20, 2014 5:47 PM

Congrats to Tez. I am glad he grew up and is said to be a leader in the locker room. It’s nice to see a kid grow into a man. Your move Cleveland. Who-Dey!

  16. coloneldukelacross says: Aug 20, 2014 5:51 PM

They shouldn’t have signed him. He is undraftable.

  17. clownsfan says: Aug 20, 2014 5:54 PM

Happy for this kid! Has worked hard to prove his critics wrong while managing to stay out of trouble off the field. He deserves this deal. Josh Gordon could learn something from him.

  18. steelcurtainn says: Aug 20, 2014 6:12 PM

Overrated! Bell and Blount will eat this guy alive.

  19. arizonasdj says: Aug 20, 2014 6:15 PM

As an ASU fan I definitely had concerns about him but knew from watching him play he would be a BEAST in the league. Glad he got his act together and proving the doubters (myself included) wrong! Best of luck Tez

  20. bonniebengal says: Aug 20, 2014 6:17 PM

From undrafted free agent to pro bowl in two years. Vontaze is the real deal.

Im glad hes going to be here for a while.

    Thanks Mikey Brown

    Good decision by the Bengals!

  24. deathonwings410 says: Aug 20, 2014 6:30 PM

I hope Mosley and Brown strive to be like this guy.

  25. schmitty2 says: Aug 20, 2014 6:37 PM

Good deal for a great LB. I’m still in shock that after 23 years Mike Brown might be shedding his penny pinching ways.

  26. anaheim2dafullest says: Aug 20, 2014 6:37 PM

I give this guy props he could have been a nutcase and ruined his God given ability like a lot of players but no he got his head together and turned it around and now is being rewarded for it.

  27. nopepper123 says: Aug 20, 2014 6:40 PM

Dunlap, Atkins, Dalton and Burfict……next guy to be AJ Green……I’d say this team’s window may be for 5 to 6 more years…………

  28. We, the Steelers, support the immediate relocation of the Bills, Raiders, Vikings, Jaguars, Buccaneers, Rams, Ravens, Chargers, Colts, and Cardinals. Their current cities are an embarrassment to the NFL and the game Pittsburgh invented. #6 says: Aug 20, 2014 6:44 PM

How is this move going to put them over the top? Another mediocre, overpaying signing by the Bengals. We believe the Steelers have won 17 playoff/Super Bowl games since the Bengals last won one. Sad, we know. It seems we are like a clock that keep on ticking, and you are Captain Hook. We churn out butter like they are Noll Trophies. We build boats on your tears. We build lots of boats. Bengals fans look up: learned helplessness.

  29. godofwine330 says: Aug 20, 2014 6:51 PM

Well deserved. Could have been a butt and been out of the league, but he kept his nose clean and got rewarded. SINcinnati is ironically a place for redemption. Most of the players they take in who were dropped or neglected due to bad behavior contribute without issue, even Adam Jones has quietly had a good career there. The Bengals have perfected the NFL’s version of buy low sell high.

  30. tiggerblood says: Aug 20, 2014 6:52 PM

Haha Bell silly steelers fans. That guy could not take the rock and turn the corner to save his life last season. Looked slow turning the corner against everybody and runs tall making a big target. No further evidence needed then his 3.5 average and the Blount signing. But who knows could’ve worked his tail off this offseason

  31. shoesfinest says: Aug 20, 2014 6:57 PM

    Now get AJ done!

  32. partmachine says: Aug 20, 2014 6:58 PM

Good linebacker, a little dirty which is OK. Deserves the contract just for not becoming a punk.

Bengals not geniuses though, it was any easy pickup.

  33. koudoes says: Aug 20, 2014 7:02 PM

He truly earned it after seeing his first round stock fall. I like that he fell because it obviously changed him for the better. He’s been a model NFL player.

  34. nativeraider says: Aug 20, 2014 7:03 PM

Still upset the Raiders never drafted him with there last draft pick. But anyway, good for him. It seems like he woulda got a much BIGGER contract considering the #s he been putting up.

  35. philyeagles5 says: Aug 20, 2014 7:11 PM

    Congrats, weakside linebacker.

  36. bonniebengal says: Aug 20, 2014 7:14 PM

Of our two best players on defense, Vontaze Burfict was an undrafted free agent and Geno Atkins was taken in the 4th round. The draft is a crap shoot.

  37. samoanjungle says: Aug 20, 2014 7:26 PM

Wow, very happy about this but seems like he could have gotten a lot more.
The Bengals had big-time leverage on him I guess.
Good for him it is a short deal. He can still look forward to a huge contract in a few years.

  38. skins26portis says: Aug 20, 2014 7:36 PM

Vontaze always had the talent even when he was at Centennial HS in Corona CA . I watched him at ASU dominate but he was not discipline and hurt him team with stupid penalties . He showed up at the NFL combine out of sha

  39. skins26portis says: Aug 20, 2014 7:38 PM

Out of shape this caused Vontaze draft stock to slide as he was predicted to be a 1st round pick at the beginning of his Jr year at ASU. So far he has kept his nose clean and played outstanding football . Let’s hope he doesn’t let the money change him fur the worse .

  40. 6250claimer says: Aug 20, 2014 9:09 PM

Really, really happy for the kid. He was TOTALLY mishandled at ASU by Dennis Erickson & staff, to the point that he wasn’t even drafted. Had all kinds of on-field discipline issues and by all appearances, never got any help with it. Was constantly shielded from the media. As soon as he got to the NFL, he got some proper mentoring, pulled his game together, and has become a star. Congratulations, VB, you deserve it.

  41. shelbysensation says: Aug 20, 2014 9:12 PM

Bell and Blount are going to eat him alive? How stoned are they going to get to make them want to eat a human? All 20 grams?

  42. mountaindont says: Aug 20, 2014 9:16 PM

He got the big money. This will be another test on his character

  43. rskinzluva says: Aug 20, 2014 9:19 PM

He always said he lives fb. He always had the talent. His, off field problems, well some thought he felt entitled. But the best thing that hapoenef to him was to not be drafted. He proved 31 teams, well 32, how wrong they were and has now been rewarded. Strange the safe bets have been worse, but thats how it goes.

  44. skippyhandleman says: Aug 20, 2014 9:26 PM

I love listening to Steelers fans talk about their Super Bowls. This is a “what have you done for me lately” league. All they have done is perfect the art of mediocrity. Keep living in the past and enjoy playing Atari. I hear it’s here to stay.

  45. banky74 says: Aug 20, 2014 9:27 PM

What the hell kind of name is “Vontaze”?

  46. whodat5150 says: Aug 20, 2014 9:30 PM

I think this young man realizes how he screwed himself out of millions by all his shenanigans, that cost him being a first round pick; as he should have been. I’m sure he realizes that if he stays focused, he’ll get another pretty big contract since LBs can remain productive into their mid 30s. Big ups to this young man for righting his ship!

  47. whodey4life513 says: Aug 20, 2014 10:46 PM

    THANK YOU GOD!!!!!! WHO DEY!!!

  48. bonniebengal says: Aug 21, 2014 6:46 AM

Burfict is the heart of our defense. Getting him extended was a big deal. I believe all of the guys want to stay together and are taking deals that are lucrative, but also leave room to sign other players. Green will get the biggest deal of all and we have to have room for that.
