Jairus Byrd expected to make Saints debut on Saturday

The Saints signed safety Jairus Byrd this offseason in a bid to improve their defense to a level that will allow them to compete for a Super Bowl, so they decided that it was better for him to have back surgery in May than to try to play through a disk injury during the season.

That meant Byrd would have to spend a spell on the sideline watching his teammates practice instead of being on the field with them, but that period has come to an end. Byrd took part in his first full-contact practice since joining the Saints on Tuesday and coach Sean Payton said that he expects Byrd to take another step forward on Saturday when he takes the field against the Colts.

“This is an important game, because he hasn’t been able to play in the first two,” Payton said, via ESPN.com. “Now, we’ll be smart with the reps we give him and the amount we give him, but I don’t think you can just throw the ball out there and play.”

Byrd had 22 interceptions and 11 forced fumbles while he was a member of the Bills and the Saints would love to see his takeaway skills make the trip with him to Rob Ryan’s defense in New Orleans. If they do, it will fill in a piece missing from last year’s team and make the Saints an even tougher out than they were in making it to the Divisional Round last season.

Gronk has more touchdowns than Graham.

    In 15 less games.

Watch out Baby, now the real Byrdman is in town!

No!!!! Now the doom and gloom trolls will have to come up with something else since they all predicted Byrd would not be healthy for the opener..

Doesnt he have plantar fasciitis too?

  5. billswillnevermove says: Aug 20, 2014 9:34 AM

It will be a short debut…….on IR after 4 games, bank on it. Actually one of the smart moves the Bills made this year was not signing him. Aaron Williams is actually better, had a better year last year. Glad we don’t have this headache on our team anymore.

Talented, but what a cry baby punk he was last year. Good luck with him.

He’s going to play in an NFL game 2 months after back surgery? Yeah, he won’t have any orthopedic issues when he’s 40.

This hroken bird just fleeced the aints!

I’m sick of the sorry bills fans trying to justify a playmaker being let go. Byrd had 3 full seasons (that’s 16 games buddy) prior to missing 5 games the year he was franchise tagged. Get real.

He usually misses most pre-seasons & about 1/3 of the regular season games, so I’d plan on being without his services again very shortly.

Hope he is the playmaker like he was with the Bills. Can’t wait to see him along side Vaccaro. They should make out defense that much better! WHO DAT?!

    2013 – 4th overall D.

    Nuff Said

Wish these commenters would realize this isant 2012. But they will if we play their team

Can’t wait to see him in action, even if it is limited.

When healthy he’s a great player. He’s always in the right place at the right time. I won’t be hater because he left the Bills for the cash. I just don’t know if a safety is worth that kind of cap hit.

What if dat Byrd have broken wing ? Screw dat man.

    Tom Brady: Yards-49,149 – TD’s – 359 – CMP% 63.4 – years passing for more than 5,000 yards – 1

    Drew Brees: Yards- 51,081 – TD’s 363 – CMP% 65.9 – years passing for more than 5,000 yards – 4

In one less season. See how anyone can work numbers there.

The only difference between the best TE in the NFL and the number two TE (when healthy) is 80 catches (advantage Graham), roughly 600 receiving yards (advantage Graham), 1 TD (advantage Gronk) and games played which is 12 not 15 so check your facts (advantage Graham). I will trade 12 more games with 80 more catches and 600 more receiving yards for one touchdown all day every day. Oh hopefully humpty dumpty doesn’t fall apart again this season, not sure how many more time they can put him back together again.

Saints got fleeced , he’ll never be the same after back surgery

You need to stop lying. Anybody with 2 eyes and an internet connection can look Byrd up and see that he played all 16 games for 3 straight seasons before last year.

Bills fans are hilarious. Byrd’s attitude had nothing to do with playing for one of the worst franchises in the league, right?

P.S. your team hasn’t made the playoffs this millennium. Pipe down.

Bills fans are sour like spoiled Milk huh? Its ok, all 15 of yall can become Saints fans when we beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Just hold on to what you got.
