Report: 49ers move practice after footing problems on Levi’s Stadium turf

Denver Broncos v San Francisco 49ers Getty Images

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh reportedly stopped Wednesday’s practice at Levi’s Stadium and moved the workout to the club’s practice field after the club had footing problems on the stadium’s playing surface.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, Harbaugh gathered his team after Stevie Johnson fell running a pass route during the workout, which featured “huge divots” and “uneven turf.” Also, CSNBayArea.com observed that Niners G.M. Trent Baalke was “clearly agitated” about field conditions at the new stadium, which hosted its first-ever NFL game just three days ago. Rookie wideout Bruce Ellington also appeared to slip and fall on the field, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

The Levi’s Stadium practice was open to fans, who were reportedly given free admission to the 49ers Museum after the team moved the workout.

The Niners’ next home preseason game is Sunday vs. San Diego. It’s the club’s third preseason contest, which customarily is the final dress rehearsal for the regular season opener. The question now is whether the field will be in better shape after Wednesday’s events.

What a joke. I was in Dallas for a neutral site game, that thing is amazing.

  6. redandgoldhitman52 says: Aug 20, 2014 9:20 PM

if there was a mount rushmore of coaches, harbaugh would be on it without a doubt.

I’m offended they moved the practice and called out the lawn crew…they should change their name.

  9. dontbugmeonsundays says: Aug 20, 2014 9:23 PM

Not a hater or anything and I’m from the Bay Area, but the new Levi’s stadium ain’t all that. You would think that since it’s in the Bay Area that it would set the standard for stadiums but they dropped the ball on this one.

  10. overweightman says: Aug 20, 2014 9:24 PM

The seahawks will never have a museum. No history, no pride.

  12. shaggytoodle says: Aug 20, 2014 9:25 PM

Levis stadium is all ready cursed with their team being whooped in the pre season. To break the curse they must acquire a QB that can pass from a pocket.

Fans could go to the museum to see the current exhibition, or wait to see ancient relics the next time the Steelers were in town.

  33. misterseahawk says: Aug 20, 2014 9:44 PM

NFC West is going to be a cake walk for my Hawks. Niners are imploding, Cardinals are frauds and the Lambs are softer than Charmin! I honestly, truthfully see the Hawks sweeping the West easily because its that pathetic outside the great Northwest!

    GO HAWKS!

  34. seabrawk12 says: Aug 20, 2014 9:46 PM

Hopefully they get the field conditions improved so that we don’t see any injuries occur to the Niners or any visiting teams. There is no reason why a brand new facility should have these issues. Player safety first. . . unless you’re Roger Goodell, then profit first.

  79. billybone says: Aug 21, 2014 12:56 AM

Easy fix I am sure, but for a football stadium that looks like a baseball stadium, awkward design, looks unfinished, cost over one billion dollars, and that is now located well beyond where the Stick was and not even in San Fran I’d be disappointed if I were a 9’er fan.

But apparently it has wifi so that’s cool…… :/

I was at the practice. Really neat to be in Field of Jeans. But the practice fields they can split off and focus on more drills.

Seems like a lot of parking lots around. we got in Green Lot 1. Why not Letters / Numbers in the area you park in?? so takes like 10-15 min to find your car!

11 bucks for beers!! 7 bucks for popcorn. very pricey. Drink a lot before you come in!! and make sure you have a clear 12x6x12 bag. no purses no diaper bags!! small clutch purse and clear bag that size Is all that is allowed. so bring water or coke in un open PLASTIC bottles!!

The worst thing about the place is they sell Pepsi not Coke!! There is a beer Tap room looks like 20 diff beers to pick. buck yeah 10-11 bucks a bottle ouch!

Day games looks like sun right on top of you so bring a hat!! will get hot out there!!

Bummer practice was cut short, but safety first. And really sweet we get free museum passes!!

I remember when Metlife Stadium had a few issues when it was built to the extent that they replaced the center half with a NFL logo instead of changing it to a Giants/Jets for each game. We also had someone out the rest of the season after tearing their ACL in a pre-season practice. You can throw all the money you want into a field but until you have a real-life scenario like a football game at full speed, you’re really not going to know how the field truly lies.

  100. vesh31 says: Aug 21, 2014 8:31 AM

    Nice stadium….Not!!!!

A couple of questions for you loyal 49ers Fans.

    1. Why was the exact shades of blue and green well known to Seahawks Fans used to promote Recycling?

Other shades could have been used.
However, it is nice of you to keep constant reminders of who the current Super Bowl Champions are throughout your new stadium.

    2. If San Francisco has such a loyal Fan base, Then why are 15.7% of the tickets for the Seahawks game in Levi Stadium currently listed on just one Resale Site? (Stub hub).

With all of the ticket resale options available, I would estimate that over 30% of the tickets for this game are currently on the Resale Market.

Not very Loyal of the current ticket holders.

It looks like the 12th man has the opportunity to set a noise record in Levi stadium also.

That would be embarrassing for the 49ers offense to need timeouts to communicate plays in their own new stadium.

Lambeau’s turf would be the solution over whatever they installed in Levi’s Stadium:

” Installed in 2007, the top level of the field system is 12 inches of root-zone sand and Kentucky bluegrass turf. DD GrassMaster synthetic fibers are stitched into the surface, providing strength and stability to the field. Fibers extend approximately seven inches below the surface and are exposed approximately one inch above the surface and are spaced every three-quarters of an inch. Approximately 20 million individual stitches make up the process.”
