Steelers sign Brett Keisel to two-year deal

It’s official — Brett Keisel is returning to the club for whom he’s played his entire career.

The Steelers announced Wednesday they had signed Keisel, a long-time defensive end in the club’s 3-4 scheme, to a two-year contract. The announcement was made on the club’s website.

The 35-year-old Keisel has appeared in 144 regular season games for Pittsburgh since 2002, making 110 starts.

Keisel’s re-signing with Pittsburgh came after Arizona — a popular landing spot for former Steelers in recent years — expressed interest in the veteran defensive lineman.

In a corresponding roster move Wednesday, the Steelers waived first-year defensive tackle Al Lapuaho.

They can’t be paying much over vet minimum. It’s really the tail end of his career.

It was a only a matter of time…back home where he belongs. This guy is a true Steeler and is great out in the community. Google the video of him fishing with the little sick kid!

    2 years?!!

With the young guys, I was thinking it would be awesome to have him back for ONE at the vet min. two years? I don’t get it.

On a sidenote – Cam Heyward backed up by Keisel – Cam Thomas backed up/splitting time with Stephon Tuitt…I like the depth.

I’m happy to have the Diesel back but he will be taking a roster spot that could have gone to a rookie.

Assuming the Steelers keep 5, the DE/DT that will make the roster are:

Hebron Fangupo – listed as DE but also plays NT
    Cameron Heyward
    Cam Thomas
    Stephon Tuitt
    Brett Kiesel

That leaves out Brian Arnfelt, Josh Mauro, and Nick Williams.

I doubt the second year will even come into play, unless he has a age-reversing magical great season. The only money a player can really depend on is the guaranteed money these days. It’s just great to have him back. Such a great guy, does wonders for the community, great for the locker room.

I think most Steelers fans saw this coming though. They never reissued his number and he never cleaned out his locker. He certainly knows the system, he’s always in good shape and missing training camp probably saved some wear and tear. I think the Cardinals’ need just sped up the process.

    Welcome back, Beard!
    GO STEELERS!

Do you remember when Tebow knocked the steelers out of the playoffs.

He looks a lot older than 35 with that beard. But I have to admit the beard is iconic.

Let the debate for the dl spots begin! The Steelers always keep at least six defensive lineman, and I think once they kept seven. I’m going with McClendon, Tuitt, Heyward, Thomas, Keisel and I think McCullers has beaten out Fangupo for the back up nose guard spot. The new extra two spots on the practice squad are going to help. I think Mauro, who has been great as an undrafted free agent de gets one spot. Maybe Arnfeldt too, although he’s been a bit disappointing so far this year.

Where is Bill Leavy’s deal? The Steelers promised a promotion for the SB40. Where is it?

Another excellent move by a franchise that only knows how to make excellent moves. We are that clock that keep on ticking, and you are Captain Hook.

Welcome back Brett! Keisel was always one of my favorite Steelers. I hope he plays both years of his contract.

Great teacher for the young players and still has a little something left in the tank. He has been in the league only 12 years and wasn’t always a full-time starter. The biggest asset is his leadership.

  19. davebarker570 says: Aug 20, 2014 12:25 PM

What does that say about the steelers confidence in their young defensive line players ?

After LeBeau is canned this year, he can open a senior citizen living center. Tomlin will make him the sacrificial lamb, like he did to Bruce Arians.

As a Pats fan with no love for the Steelers, I have to tip my hat to Mr. Keisel. At a time in sports where players seem to only care to get every last dime, it’s refreshing to see a loyal guy stay with the team he started with even though more money was elsewhere.

  22. ashleyschafferbmw says: Aug 20, 2014 12:42 PM

Bringing him back as an extremely solid backup, and mentor for younger players for a relatively inexpensive cost. But I’m sure you trolls don’t care about the reality of the situation, just make a bunch of hater comments about the steelers being old even though they aren’t.

  23. ugadogs21 says: Aug 20, 2014 12:52 PM

Steady player. Quietly goes about his business every year.

  25. bassplucker says: Aug 20, 2014 1:26 PM

So what took so long? Was this the plan all along and just a convenient way for him to avoid training camp?

  26. johnnybgood19 says: Aug 20, 2014 3:13 PM

There are a few on this team that need to be STEELERS FOR LIFE… the beard is one….
