Bill O’Brien: Randy Bullock has edge to keep Texans’ kicker job

Shane Lechler, Randy Bullock AP

If Chris Boswell is going to win the Texans’ kicking job, he is going to have to catch incumbent Randy Bullock.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien indicated Thursday that Bullock is “in the lead” in the kicking battle, according to Deepi Sidhu of HoustonTexans.com.

A third-year pro from Texas A&M, Bullock connected on 26-of-35 field goals in 2013 for Houston, forcing touchbacks on 29-of-67 kickoffs. All nine of Bullock’s misses were from 40 yards and out.

Both Boswell and Bullock have hit each hit one field goal try this preseason. However, Boswell, an undrafted rookie from Rice, missed a pair of extra points in Houston’s 32-7 win vs. Atlanta on August 16.

The NFL’s longer extra point experiment has ended, leaving the customary chip shots for the rest of the exhibition season. But those one-point misses couldn’t have helped Boswell’s cause. That said, he’s still in the competition with Bullock, which gives him a chance to show Houston (and other clubs) what he can do.

That only means Boswell is worse than Bullock.

Where have all the kickers gone, by the way?

Boswell must really be bad.. he did miss two extra points last week…. but that was only because he was kickin not Bullock…lol

Bullock is so bad, he missed a few important field goals last year that other kickers could have made. We should have gotten rid of him halfway through the year. He’s one of those Texas A&M players that Kubiak loved because it’s his alma mater.

Had Bullock graduated a year later… A&M might have won a national title in 2012. His replacement missed 2 FGs and an XP in the LSU game that A&M lost by 5. Had they won that game they would have gone to the SEC title game and the way they finished that year, they easily could have won it all.

    And I’m not sure how it’s close…. Boswell has missed 2 XPs…. That’s pretty pathetic…

Lol. Texas A&M University, where not only do we hang out hats on disputed national titles from 1939, but we also take pride in hypothetical national titles that may have been earned in another alternate universe if a kicker had not graduated early. Good stuff.

For the record, Bullock hasn’t missed a kick since game 7 last year. Clearly, there was something wrong with him at the beginning of the season, but I think he has turned it around. Only time will tell though.
