Le’Veon Bell made his own way to Philadelphia

Le'Veon Bell AP

Steelers running backs Le’Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount were both in a car pulled over by police on Wednesday and are expected to be charged with possession of marijuana after 20 grams of it were found in the vehicle, but only Bell is also facing potential DUI charges since he was behind the wheel.

Bell was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital to have his blood drawn to test for marijuana in his system, which meant that he didn’t make it on the team’s charter flight to Philadelphia for Thursday’s game against the Eagles. Missing the charter won’t mean that Bell is staying at home, however.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Bell made his own way to Philadelphia. Blount, who did not have any blood drawn, was on the team’s charter flight.

The team is aware of the incident on Wednesday, but offered no further comment about either player’s status for Thursday night’s game or anything else having to do with their status.

Marijuana stays in your system for about a month, long after the buzz wears off. Even with a toxicologist to testify, sounds like an uphill battle to prosecute as a DUI

“Bell was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital to have his blood drawn to test for marijuana in his system,…”

Doesn’t this only prove that he has smoked within the past 30ish days? It seems to me that any lawyer worth ANYTHING could fight that he was actually high while driving that day due to lack of evidence.

  35. ghost26 says: Aug 21, 2014 11:04 AM

I’m all for the legalization of marijuana BUT driving under the influence (just like alcohol) is never going to be ‘okay.’ Stupid mistake by Bell & hopefully he understands the severity of driving a vehicle while under the influence but let’s not make him out to be Public Enemy Number 1.

  53. bassplucker says: Aug 21, 2014 11:41 AM

Isn’t Blount in particular about on his last mulligan? He was a bad seed coming out of college already and doesn’t seem to have changed much for the better since then.

  54. dryzzt23 says: Aug 21, 2014 11:42 AM

Bell & Blount should man up and pay the price for their poor decisions.
I don’t want to hear their agent-crafted “apology”. They KNEW what they were doing is wrong and illegal but they wanted to be “cool” and do it anyway.

I hope the DA makes examples of these two and prosecutes them to the fullest extent of the law and then the NFL takes it even further.

Their actions adversely impacted their co-workers, their employer, other citizens who were driving at the time, the cash value of the Steelers (since fools like bell, Blount, Worley, & Holmes choose weed over everything). This is NOT a victimless crime.

  55. dickroy says: Aug 21, 2014 11:43 AM

What a selfish, stupid thing to do to your team and fellow players. My 9 year old grandson is a huge Steeler fan. He loves Bell, wanted his jersey, and was looking forward to watching him tonight.
Now he will find this out today. I hate having to explain it.

Both of these idiots should be fined and suspended. Maybe Blount should be let go.

  64. Steeley McBeam says: Aug 21, 2014 12:15 PM

Peoples idea of the punishment is so delusional.

First, a first time offender is fined 2 game checks and NOT suspended.

Second, the DUI is the more serious charge and Bell wont be suspended for that until after the trial runs its course. Jerome Simpson was just handed his suspension from a DUI last November.

Both will be docked 2 game checks and Bell will be suspended one game NEXT season.

    Sorry to disappoint you.

Top 3 receivers in the NFL:
    1.) Megatron
    2.) Golden Tate
3.) Eric Ebron (TE but he will be more productive in the slot than any other slot receiver in the league)

  71. magicmtndan says: Aug 21, 2014 1:01 PM

Ding Dong Bell and Legarrette Blunt Blount are knuckleheads. But every team has stoners and the NFL needs to get up to speed on life in 2014 and stop treating smoking dope like taking performance enhancing drugs.

  72. dryzzt23 says: Aug 21, 2014 1:02 PM

So it’s ok to smoke weed per PFT but we’d better never criticize it, instead we must enable it.

Is that your agenda PFT? That must be it b/c if I dare to criticize the use of weed by these players you delete my post.

  74. holeinone09 says: Aug 21, 2014 1:14 PM

These guys are complete idiots for doing this, apparently on their way to travel with the team! Come on. They let their teams down, and the fans, and negatively impacted their reputation, for at least a short period of time. Of course with the way society is, I would bet up to a third or more of NFL players smoke pot. That is not to excuse what they did, they made a terrible mistake, and they should do an appropriate punishment.

And this will all blow over at some point and life will go on. In perspective, its not like they knocked out/dragged around their fiancé/wife (with video available), or poured bleach over their babymomma’s head, took PEDs, or was possibly involved in a murder, or anything like that. Still, I expect the Steelers to appropriately punish them regardless of what the league does, unlike what some other teams do (or don’t do) when their players break the rules.
