Le’Veon Bell made his own way to Philadelphia

AP

Steelers running backs Le’Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount were both in a car pulled over by police on Wednesday and are expected to be charged with possession of marijuana after 20 grams of it were found in the vehicle, but only Bell is also facing potential DUI charges since he was behind the wheel.

Bell was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital to have his blood drawn to test for marijuana in his system, which meant that he didn’t make it on the team’s charter flight to Philadelphia for Thursday’s game against the Eagles. Missing the charter won’t mean that Bell is staying at home, however.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Bell made his own way to Philadelphia. Blount, who did not have any blood drawn, was on the team’s charter flight.

The team is aware of the incident on Wednesday, but offered no further comment about either player’s status for Thursday night’s game or anything else having to do with their status.

  1. That car was probably right out of a Cheech and Chong movie. Door opens and smoke billows out. Two stoners fall on the pavement.

  2. As long as he doesn’t leave the state, he is allowed to travel around. What’s with all the criminals in Pittsburgh and Baltimore????

  3. Well at least he did one smart thing amongst all this other stupidity. Still an idiot, go smoke at home or anywhere other than a vehicle.

  4. Tell us again Stiller fans… How classy your organization is … Above all of this.. What a bunch of clowns

  5. Nothing should happen to either, since Aldon Smith can be arrested multiple times, Ray Lewis is still being promoted, Ray Rice beat up a woman and got two games. Mary Jane is legal in many US states. But… Roger Goodell hates the Steelers, so they will both probably get 10-12 games. Then Irsay will get a like $10 fine.

  6. Anyone else think our justice system and nfl is absurd when it comes to marijuana? I mean take the guy to the hospital and take his blood because he smoked a plant? I’m no pot head either.

  7. This doesn’t affect their standing for this season, folks. This is a 2015 issue and most likely a one-game suspension.

  8. “Bell was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital to have his blood drawn to test for marijuana in his system,…”

Doesn’t this only prove that he has smoked within the past 30ish days? It seems to me that any lawyer worth ANYTHING could fight that he was actually high while driving that day due to lack of evidence.

  9. I’m all for the legalization of marijuana BUT driving under the influence (just like alcohol) is never going to be ‘okay.’ Stupid mistake by Bell & hopefully he understands the severity of driving a vehicle while under the influence but let’s not make him out to be Public Enemy Number 1.

  10. I’m an optimist by nature so the positive part of this story is that at least our starting running backs are bonding. If you can share a joint, I guess you can share the football too.

  11. Say what you want about this situation – and so many people have – but at least it’s entertaining. Yep, on or off the field, the Steelers are more fun to watch than most teams.

Thanks for coming by, folks. Take a moment to enjoy our complimentary salad and hookah bar while you’re here! Please remember to tip your waitress.

  12. One of these players needs to get a medical marijuana card and challenge the league based on that.

  13. Tebowed out of the playoffs years ago 0 winning seasons and 0 playoff appearances.
Maybe he goes to Philadelphia looking for a new team.

  14. Isn’t Blount in particular about on his last mulligan? He was a bad seed coming out of college already and doesn’t seem to have changed much for the better since then.

  15. Bell & Blount should man up and pay the price for their poor decisions.
I don’t want to hear their agent-crafted “apology”. They KNEW what they were doing is wrong and illegal but they wanted to be “cool” and do it anyway.

I hope the DA makes examples of these two and prosecutes them to the fullest extent of the law and then the NFL takes it even further.

Their actions adversely impacted their co-workers, their employer, other citizens who were driving at the time, the cash value of the Steelers (since fools like bell, Blount, Worley, & Holmes choose weed over everything). This is NOT a victimless crime.

  16. What a selfish, stupid thing to do to your team and fellow players. My 9 year old grandson is a huge Steeler fan. He loves Bell, wanted his jersey, and was looking forward to watching him tonight.
Now he will find this out today. I hate having to explain it.

Both of these idiots should be fined and suspended. Maybe Blount should be let go.

  17. When do we stop wasting millions on policing marijuana and start making millions by taxing its distribution. Did we learn nothing from prohibition?

  18. I was gonna play the eagles in the preseason, but then I got high. I was gonna score a TD on them but then I got high. Now I’m on the bench and I know why, because I got high, because I got high, because I got hiiiiiiigh.

  19. you steelers fans always put Ray Lewis in these
type things. he was found not quilty, leave the man alone he’s not even playing .ever team has problem players just a matter of time before they get caught.

  20. This is not really all that big of a deal. The police should be concerned with monitoring real criminals like Ben Roethlisberger.

  21. Peoples idea of the punishment is so delusional.

First, a first time offender is fined 2 game checks and NOT suspended.

Second, the DUI is the more serious charge and Bell wont be suspended for that until after the trial runs its course. Jerome Simpson was just handed his suspension from a DUI last November.

Both will be docked 2 game checks and Bell will be suspended one game NEXT season.

    Sorry to disappoint you.

  22. What does Le’Veon Bell have to do with my Detroit Lions annihilating the league this season and winning the NFCN 13-3.

Top 3 receivers in the NFL:
    1.) Megatron
    2.) Golden Tate
3.) Eric Ebron (TE but he will be more productive in the slot than any other slot receiver in the league)

  23. Again, The Steelers should suspend both running backs the first regular season game. The players get no game check and the fans don’t have to suffer a loss because it’s the lowly Browns. Everyone wins!

  24. Ding Dong Bell and Legarrette Blunt Blount are knuckleheads. But every team has stoners and the NFL needs to get up to speed on life in 2014 and stop treating smoking dope like taking performance enhancing drugs.

  25. So it’s ok to smoke weed per PFT but we’d better never criticize it, instead we must enable it.

Is that your agenda PFT? That must be it b/c if I dare to criticize the use of weed by these players you delete my post.

  26. These guys are complete idiots for doing this, apparently on their way to travel with the team! Come on. They let their teams down, and the fans, and negatively impacted their reputation, for at least a short period of time. Of course with the way society is, I would bet up to a third or more of NFL players smoke pot. That is not to excuse what they did, they made a terrible mistake, and they should do an appropriate punishment.

And this will all blow over at some point and life will go on. In perspective, its not like they knocked out/dragged around their fiancé/wife (with video available), or poured bleach over their babymomma’s head, took PEDs, or was possibly involved in a murder, or anything like that. Still, I expect the Steelers to appropriately punish them regardless of what the league does, unlike what some other teams do (or don’t do) when their players break the rules.

  27. “Anyone else think our justice system and nfl is absurd when it comes to marijuana? I mean take the guy to the hospital and take his blood because he smoked a plant? I’m no pot head either.”

    He was driving car, fool.

  28. I hope this wakes Bell up. Looking forward to a better season.

    Hi Deb,
Been a while. Hope you are doing well.

  29. to the Ratbird fans talking about how this is Karma…think about what you are really saying. You’re saying that a woman had to get knocked out cold, in order for these two knuckleheads to be arrested for pot? smh!

Well, ok, if by many states you mean TWO. I’ll bet you are one of those low wattage voters also.

Goodell doesn’t hate the Steelers that much, Big Ben is still playing isn’t he? Any cheese with that whine?

  32. Come on Spartan. You know better than that. I am disappointed in Bell. These are adults that can make their own decisions. But at least take some precautions. 1. You can afford to have it delivered. 2. Should not have had it on his person, Don’t you listen to Jay Z? ……………… “Do you mind if I look round the car a little bit?”
Well my glove compartment is locked so is the trunk and the back
And I know my rights so you gon’ need a warrant for that ………….

  33. To everyone on here. If you do not like the way the NFL and government criminalize what you call a plant, please take the time to vote. It is high time (no pun intended, or was it) we take another look at the benefits compared to the legal penalties. (steps off soap box)

  34. So, where are the NFL drug testers. You have a clear cut case of two violators of the drug policy.

  35. I think the one with the initials L.B. is to blame here. The other one is probably a victim of circumstances.

Belichick offloaded Blount at precisely the right time. The genius never fails.

  37. Lol at Coach John Harbaugh looking down his nose at Steelers players getting arrested. Your roster resembles the team from The Longest Yard. I hate the Steelers, no bias here.

  38. What’s the Pittsburgh Steeler’s favorite movie title?

    A). Dumb and Dumber
    B). Up in Smoke
    C). Munchies
    D). The Joint
    E). Taxi
    F). Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

If someone made up this story, who’d think it was realistic?
