Texans-Broncos practice gets chippy

Peyton AP

The Texans and Broncos already may be getting sick of each other.

Wednesday’s joint practices between the two teams, occurring in advance of their Saturday night preseason game, included some heated moments.

Via Arnie Stapleton of the Associated Press, Texans defensive end J.J. Watt and Broncos right tackle Chris Clark exchanged words during one-on-one drills, after Watt dominated Clark and Clark took a swipe at Watt, knocking his helmet off.

Don’t get mad when you get beat,” Watt said to Clark.

Meanwhile, Texans safety D.J. Swearinger celebrated a little too loudly and proudly after intercepting Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning during 11-on-11 drills.

“I picked off Peyton today and I guess that got them a little chippy,” Swearinger said. “The offense did great, ran the ball down their throat, so, hey, I would get mad, too.  That’s all it is:  Players making plays and people getting mad.”

Coach Bill O’Brien downplayed the notion that lines were crossed.

“It was competition,” O’Brien told reporters.  “I don’t really even know what you’re talking about.  I really don’t.  It was just a lot of good competition and I felt like it helped our team a lot, and I’m not speaking for the Broncos, but I know that competition helps everybody, so it was good.”

The good news is that no actual fights occurred.  For the Broncos, the better news was that the offense heard and heeded quarterback Peyton Manning’s complaints from Tuesday regarding its performance at practice.

“I’m sure a lot of our guys noticed that he wasn’t happy on the field,” offensive coordinator Adam Gase told reporters. “I spoke my mind in the meetings. I’m not really going to do it out here for everybody to watch, but I said my piece. We made sure that we came out here and had a better day.”

Thursday won’t be as good, because the teams won’t practice in pads.  Which means that the chances of intense competition or chippy moments or fisticuffs or a full-blown brouhaha will be reduced.

After his feisty cameo on Hard Knocks, as soon as I saw the headline, I knew D.J. Swearinger had to be involved!

    Johnathon Football.

Clark needs to understand that Watt basically beats everyone, so he does need to simmer down. Just be happy you’re going up against the best before the actual season starts,

  4. We, the Steelers, support the immediate relocation of the Bills, Raiders, Vikings, Jaguars, Buccaneers, Rams, Ravens, Chargers, Colts, and Cardinals. Their current cities are an embarrassment to the NFL and the game Pittsburgh invented. #6 says: Aug 21, 2014 9:00 AM

Intercepting Manning in a practice will be the highlight of his career. You could tell how happy he was.

Just wait until the season starts and reality kicks in that Fitzpatrick is your QB. 4-12.

lol though in fairness, he didn’t start the mixup on Hard Knocks. He damned sure didn’t know when to shut the hell up afterwards though.

in b4 celebrating too loudly after interceptions becomes “a point of emphasis.” 15 yard penalty and offense gets the ball back.

  8. thegronk87 says: Aug 21, 2014 9:45 AM

The texans are not observing the new peyton manning rules which forbid a defensive back to sneeze at one of the bronco receivers.

Broncos WRs should draw straws over who has to be the one to get glared at every time Peyton Manning makes a mistake.

Who cares the Broncos are elite and Texans are garbage!

That’s adorable that the Texans want to come into our town, our practice facility and run their mouths about picks in practice.

Do something on the field. Achieve some kind, ANY kind, of success during the regular season, win some games… then run your mouths.

    What an absolute joke.

Swearinger is such a tool. Between all his yapping on Hard Knocks, and all his dumb penalites last year, he’s a guy I would look to replace as soon as possible.

All the texans need to do is bring up the thrashing in the meadowlands where the broncos lost to the Seahawks everywhere and they will be quiet

What was megahead’s punishment for meeting with his OC during the offseason again?

The other 31 starting qbs would have been suspended 6 games, but not golden boy. Crickets from the league.

Broncos haven’t been relevant since John Elway and the Broncos will return back to the mediocre team they are after Manning leaves. He is the only reason they team is playoff bound.

“Hello, my lady” says Manning as he holds Fitzpatrick’s hand. (Thats what it looks like in the picture of the two for this article)

    English is hard.

Yes, we’re so irrelevant with two Lombardi Trophies and seven AFC titles. What have the Texans done?

What’s that? Oh, you intercepted Peyton Manning in a practice session? My mistake.

Your team is as obnoxious as the Texan tourists who come to Colorado and ski in their jeans, all the while acting like you own the place. You’re guests in our home… try and act like it.

The Texans have been around for less than 15 years…your argument is petty and if you actually know anything about football your argument is ignorant.

I like what JJ Watt said if that’s truly how it went down. I don’t like hearing that anyone was running it down their throats though.

O’Brien need to reel in those DB’s they are borderline dirty and too busy celebrating minor successes

  23. coloradical420 says: Aug 21, 2014 2:39 PM

It is so senseless for a DB to talk trash. As a DB half of your job is getting beat. You’re gonna get beat. Probably more times than not. So why give the opposition firepower when the inevitable is going to happen? Swearinger likes to talk even when he wasn’t in on a play. Dude will get a reality check real quick playing in the same division as Luck.

  24. babygaga19 says: Aug 21, 2014 2:45 PM

SB team working out with worst team in NFL? LMAO!!!!!

  25. 8to80texansblog says: Aug 21, 2014 4:28 PM

Swag likes to talk… a lot. He’s a better player in his mind than in reality but the kid can lay the lumber…. now playing in coverage… that’s a different story.

Throw Julian Thomas at him all day Denver, Swag will get beat like a drum.
