Drew Brees played less than a quarter of the Saints’ third preseason game. But he made his limited playing time count.
Tonight against the Colts, Brees and the Saints’ offense ran wild: Brees completed nine of 15 passes for 128 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions. That was all Saints coach Sean Payton needed to see from his starting quarterback, and Luke McCown entered the game for the Saints late in the first quarter.
That part of the first quarter was all Brees has played in this preseason. Brees has been nursing a strained oblique, and the Saints held him out of the first two preseason games. He is not expected to play in the Saints’ fourth preseason game on Thursday.
So tonight’s 15 passes were all we’re getting out of Brees in the preseason. With those 15 passes, he did plenty.
