Could Rams make a run at Cousins?

Cousins

In the aftermath of the news that the Rams have lost quarterback Sam Bradford for the year, coach Jeff Fisher has declared that Shaun Hill is “our guy.”

After having some time to digest what it actually will mean to have a 34-year-old journeyman run the show for a full season, Fisher could change his mind. Rich Tandler of CSN Washington wonders whether the Rams could decide to make a play for Washington backup Kirk Cousins.

It would be a fairly obvious, and somewhat ironic, decision. The Rams picked up a trio of first-round picks and a second-round pick for the No. 2 overall pick that became Robert Griffin III. Despite the picks invested in Griffin, former Washington coach Mike Shanahan opted to use a fourth-round selection that same year for Griffin’s backup.

And while Washington has shown no real inclination to trade Cousins (perhaps because the team has received no real offers for him), the burgeoning groundswell of support for Cousins over Griffin could prompt Washington to decide that the most effective way to get the thin-skinned Griffin to not worry about being benched for Cousins could be to clear Cousins off the roster.

Basically, St. Louis may need Cousins -- and Washington may not be able to afford to keep him around.

The Rams may have plenty of other options. They’d be wise to explore all of them before making any final decisions about the configuration of the team’s depth chart for the 2014 season.
