Report: Bradford done for year with ACL tear

Getty Images

The Rams went all in on Sam Bradford this season.  And he’s now out before the season even began.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Bradford tore the ACL in his left knee.  It’s the ACL that replaced the ACL Bradford tore last October, after starting the year with 14 touchdown passes and four interceptions.

Per Mortensen, Bradford will miss the entire 2014 campaign.  He’ll nevertheless earn his full base salary of $14.015 million, pushing his five-year earnings north of $65 million.

Bradford entered the NFL with significant durability concerns, after missing all of 2009 after a hit that appeared to be routine re-injured his shoulder in the first college football game of the year at Oklahoma.  He appeared in all 16 games in 2010, winning the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year award.  He was limited to 10 games in 2011 before playing the full season in 2012.

He will end up playing seven total games from 2013 to 2014, at a total salary of more than $23 million in the two seasons combined.

The development comes after the Rams stubbornly displayed a high degree of confidence in Bradford, who’ll now enter the final year of his rookie deal with more questions than ever before.  At a base salary of $12.985 million for 2015 and a cap number of $16.58 million, the Rams will have to decide whether to keep Bradford or whether to move on.

  1. I can not take it… So tired of our dseasons ending before the season start or is over. So depressing for a fan as big as I am. I love my Rams but I am sooooooo frustrated and depressed!

  2. This Mr. Glass man is just too expensive for the Rams to keep around. Time to cut bait and go get Mark Sanchez.

  3. Terrible news for him. Sorry to see a good guy lose an entire season.

Have to wonder how Jeff Fisher can get to his usual 7-9 at this point.

  4. You can have Ponder for a seventh round pick. After week 1, that is..

The Rams had something like 24 extra 1st round picks the last few years, not one QB drafted. LOL.

  5. I feel badly for Bradford.

He has a lot of talent and could be a fine nfl qb if he could avoid the injury bug.

Some players just don’t avoid injuries and Bradford appears to be one of them.

Logic dictates the Rams will not commit 16.58 m next year based on the injury history.

  6. Wow, I can’t believe it. And before everyone calls bust:
    Marty Gilyard
    Austin Pettis
    Greg Salas
    Brian Quick
    Chris Givens
    Tavon Austin
    Stedman Bailey
    Danny Amendola
    Brandon Gibson
    Danario Alexander
    Steve Smith[NYG]
    Dominique Curry
    Brandon Lloyd
    Laurent Robinson

And don’t even get me started on that offensive line.

  7. Ouch. Hopefully a quick and easy recovery.

Trust me Ram fans, I know the feel. Bulls fan here and Rose has been out in back-to-back seasons.

  8. As a Browns fan I’d support a Johnny football trade to the Rams. And we’ll throw in Hoyer too. Like tolan04 we haven’t a qb since Kosar.

  9. Please be done with Bradford, another wasted season and it is not even game one for $@&!!!!! Fisher…. Please please…. Can we have one season with a single QB?!?!

  10. Dump him

Trade for Sanchez or Mallet or consider the season a bust and go all in on getting the number one overall pick next draft

  11. I call on all non-Christian, non-whites to march with me for tolerance in the name of Timothy Richard Tebow, who has been blackballed for his outspoken white Christianity!

  12. And Washington is not going to trade cousins unless they’re offered a huge amount of picks. RG3 has been pretty bad this preseason

  13. The year that Sam Bradford finally has a strong team around him.. He gets hurt AGAIN. Such a good QB but injury prone.. Shaun Hill is not the answer to their problems.. They need to pick up another QB.

  14. I wouldn’t say he was a bust, played pretty well when he was in the game, just had the worst luck ever, sucks, was looking forward to seeing the rams compete for 1st place in the division, now they will compete for second with the niners while the cardinals take 1st and the se-asterisk Seahawks take 4th since they can’t win by cheating anymore.

  15. Malpractice lawsuit? I mean, after all, the doctors cleared him to play. They said he was 100% recovered. Somebody has to pay.

  16. Damn that sucks for Bradford but 7 games over 2 years for 23 million. That old rookie wage scale was really messed up. Bradford never looked anything above average, at least the Rams can now move on.

  17. What a shame, the Rams were looking like a team ready to break out and win. Like usual though the only thing breaking is the QB. Maybe Bradford actually is good, but they just can’t afford to risk another setback. With even a decent QB this team has potential to be something special.

  18. He probably wouldn’t answer a call from Lea Snead because he’d have no idea who she was

  19. Doesn’t all this seem familiar to back in 99? The starter goes down in the pre-season and they have to ride a little heralded backup into the season? I’m not saying Hill is Warner, but he does have weapons and adequate experience plus a defense more than capable of keeping them in games. Greatest show on turf? Probably not. Interesting development in the west says I. Stay tuned Rams fans. 😉

  20. Trade w Redskins get Cousins….. He’ll thrive there, and prevent a qb controversy in DC….. Then Colt McCoy will back up Bobby…..(although personally I would still keep Cousins if I’m Dan Snyder until his rookie contract is up no matter what in case Bobby gets hurt again)……

  21. How disappointing…so much raw talent, but so many unfortunate injuries. However, team plays great defense and is exceptionally well coached; will still be a tough out every week.

  22. Sean Hill looks serviceable and Austin Davis has promise. The cupboard is not totally bare but the money invested hurts. Tough luck especially in that division.

    ——————————————————

    Tebow Tebow Tebow !

  24. Will there be a 2nd coming of Curt Warner? Will it Sanchize or Teblow or Mallett or Cousins? In any event it will cost the Rams.

  25. The plan to move the Rams back to LA is in place. Without the starting QB; the Rams will fall farther back in the NFC West cellar. Encouraging fans not to go to games and finally encouraging Mr. Kroenke to start construction on a new stadium on the 60 acres of land he owns in LA also elevating Coach Fisher to part owner as reward for stubbornly standing behind Sam Bradfords’ weak knee…

  26. So he’ll need another ACL to replace the ACL that replaced the ACL. Rams should go all in on Bradford again next year! Stay the course! It’s worked out well for them the last decade or so.

  27. I wont say “bust”. He still has time to make contributions in the league.
    Disappointment? Yes
Will the Rams pay $16.58M or move on? Move on

  28. Let me remind everybody what happened 15 years ago. Trent Green goes down in the preseason and in comes some dude named Kurt Warner. The Rams went on to win the Superbowl. I don’t think there is a Kurt Warner on this team, and Jeff Fisher is no Dick Vermeil, but if they get the right QB in a trade this team could surprise people.

  29. You can have Ryan mallett for one of your extra #1’s next year,,,or a 2 & 4….will get the job done. Just being reasonable,,,,You have three PATS QB’s starting right now,,(CASSELL,,HOYER,,BRADY) They know how to develop QB’s

  30. Well as a Rams fan since ’88, I could deal with bad news. I really think Shaun Hill capable. Still glad we didn’t get R.Griffin.
I say wr trade for Kirk Cousins. He has starter written all over. Quite a few capable B/Ups to take look at but need to act fast. Need QB familiar w Rams offense. Two wks til kickoff.
    Damn.
Rams will move on from Bradford. Sad to say cause liked him. Wonder if Rams will trade for QB. Preseason needs to be shortened. Many injuries this 3rd wk. Regardless, Bradford would have gotten hurt.
    😦

  31. I always like Bradford and thought he could achieve great things. Just a shame for him. On the other side, it’s Walmart. You think you’ve got a great bargain and the piece of crap breaks on you.

  32. Bring in Tebow as backup. At least give him time to learn the system. At this point what do they have to lose? They already have the media circus with Michael Sam. And think of the hype with Tebow and Sam on the same team.

  33. Well if it’s gonna happen, best it occur in the preseason so that the Rams can trade for one of the many backups that could be available and still have a half way decent season. 8-8 is a possibility.

I think these are the best out there,

    Ponder
    Sanchez
    Cousins
    Glennon
    Mallet
    Moore
    (Skip on Tebow)

And St Louis needs to move on and start thinking of taking a QB high in next years draft. The Bradford era is officially over

  34. Mallet seems like the best move to me because he might end up being the long term starter. Samchez is more proven and there’s not much risk with him. With a good defense Sanchez can be adequate, but he doesn’t have much potential upside.

  35. Tough luck, but I just cannot feel bad for a 26 year old who has already been paid ten times what I will ever earn.

  36. Hey, it’s not like they can’t find an average qb, give him a good running game and great defense, put some loudspeakers in the stands, take some ped’s and get a lawyer to cover up and get the best players out of getting caught, get the coach to Brown nose the commissioner to keep the refs from calling holding calls on the defense while they admit to cheating and take the team to a sb* win. come on everyone, it could happen.

  37. The problem is we are not bad enough even without a QB to get a first overall pick and a QB. We will be mediocre again and get no help.

  38. I disagree with all the innuendos that Bradford is some kind of sissy porcelain doll. When you re-injure a previously repaired ligament it’s a far more serious issue, and most of the time no amount of therapy and rehab will keep it strong enough to take all the hits a player incurs. It’s just terrible luck that Bradford keeps getting hit in the same place. For the sake of his long term health I hope he calls it quits after the season.

  39. I have to wonder how much fault goes to the people who pushed him to start the year..did kinda come
    Back quicker than necessary

  40. God bless the new CBA. These guys were making sick money. Shame on the Rams for not cutting him back in March when they had the chance. Guy has never been healthy, even in college. Ram’s rolled the dice and lost…

Now, call the Vikes and do us Vike fans a massive favor and take Ponder off our hands!

  41. The lack of class in some of these posts is truly astounding. Never should celebrate a player injury – NEVER. Classless.

Sam can play but has had some bad luck

  42. .
The Rams will have to pick up a QB somewhere. Mallet and Cousins seem to have the most upside. Sanchez and a veteran like Ponder would appear to be safer bets due to their experience, but it’s doubtful playing it safe will be effective in the NFC West.
    .

  43. Lost in all this is how much this must suck for him. Sure, he’s rich. But dang…all that rehab work and it goes in the preseason. Ugh.

As for a QB: Sanchez for Tavon Austin. Done deal.

  44. Pretty sure you label someone a bust when they lack the overall skill to play, his numbers are pretty good when he’s healthy, was building a career year last year, before injury.

  45. Damn Sam, I feel for you. Hope you get well soon kid. Injuries have really derailed your career before you could get it going. Glad you’ve been paid.

  46. From a Seahawks fan this is bummer news for Ram Nation and I can’t help but feel somewhat bad for you fans. With your amazing defense and Bradford back in the lineup the Rams were going to be a worrisome bunch to deal with. Still will be with that defense but it’s much harder to win with a backup QB.

  47. The Rams can trade some of the 3 #1 picks they got from Washington to get a decent QB……oh, wait…….
    Losers.
At least Bradford got $50 million guaranteed when he came in as 1st overall pick. Retire and count your money.

  48. So the post mortem stats on Bradford’s “5” year NFL career are quite staggering. 49 (out of 80) games played, 11k yards, 58.6% comp, 59 TD, 38 Int, 18 Fum. 0 playoff games and $65+ million earned. Holy guacamole.

  49. i feel bad for the guy and team… he is not a bust, like sum above are stupidly saying. a bust is someone highly touted, but never lives up to the expectations because they just arent THAT good… Bradford IS good, when he plays, But he never plays… theres a difference between constantly hurt and a bust.

  50. It’s sad when a player gets hurt before the season even begins. At least he is a multi millionaire

  51. Welp! Sam you had an amazing career. You made $65 million for being a very mediocre quarterback, Who never had a winning record, or even sniffed the playoffs. Hell even Tebow took his team to the playoffs and actually won to game. I will miss watching you throw two pics and fumbling at least once a game. Enjoy your retirement.
    BUST!!!!!

  52. Should have taken Johnny Football number 2. Passed up a future HOF for a guy who has never stayed healthy. Stick a fork in the Rams (again)

  53. A 23 million dollar ligament. Ouch. If I were the Redskins I would give the Rams RG3 for nothing. Just take the contract over.

  54. Also, it’s interesting what fans believe. Sam Bradford makes infinitely more money than Robert Griffin as the last of the lottery QB picks, has played worse always despite being in the league longer, has a much better defense, and oh yea, there’s that whole missing a whole lot of time in the NFL as opposed to Griffin not missing much of any, yet I see comment after comment here about how good of a player he is if he could just stay healthy, which is the same thing Griffin is criticized here all the time for being, injury prone. I guess it matters how you get hurt rather than if you’re just injury prone, and also if you are quite and just can’t play that well since I also see the Kaepernick criticisms despite having just as mediocre of a receiving corp before Boldin got there and a comparable team dependent on defense and a running game with much better results of course. Guess that’s PFT logic for you though. Must go with that whole “Kirk Cousins is a stud” logic despite him stinking up the place up at the end of last year when he got his shot.

  55. Tebow is probably the best bet when you factor in what anyone else would cost you. Tebow would be available for a very reasonable salary and they wouldn’t have to give up any draft pics. Just don’t try to start him until he learns the system. At least give him a fighting chance

  56. In retrospect, there is no question that the Rams should have drafted a QB in the first round. Now, no matter what happens Bradford has crummy trade value. The Rams are just stuck with him unless they want to trade him away for next to nothing. SB has got to be the most brittle quarterback in recent memory. I hate to say it because I’ve been a fan of the kid since he was at OU, but the bottom line is that a person can have all the talent in the world and it does not mean jack if he is constantly hurt.

  57. get will soon sam.

The Rams are now poised to have a good season now that their biggest obstacle is out of the way.

  58. Bradford is very injury prone. Remember his senior year of college? He missed the entire season because he received the same re-occurring shoulder injury. And now this. Bradford’s days as the Rams starter are done. I’m just wondering how much longer he’ll be in the NFL.

Tough luck, but I just cannot feel bad for a 26 year old who has already been paid ten times what I will ever earn.

    ——————————————-
You should be earning a lot, lot more than an average Joe.

  60. I dont feel sorry for the Rams. People tried to tell this organization that Bradford was not worth 75 million dollars because he wouldn’t stay on the field for injuries. They wouldn’t listen so they got what they deserved. Lol

  61. Going from Bradford to Hill is really not a big downgrade, not like Brees or Peyton getting injured.
Maybe this is where Orton signs? Or they take a chance on Cousins, or Hoyer just so they can ride or die with Manlet Manziel.

  62. Man – I never in my LIFE thought I’d be telling teams to trade for Mark Sanchez, but the bottom of the barrel has been reached. Both the Rams and Texans should look into him. Wow times are bad.

  63. Wow this is terrible. Guy is snake bit.

Just roll with what you got rams, then sort it out in the off season. The last time you lost a starter in the preseason it turned out ok. No need to panic for someone’s backup.

  64. I wish the Raiders would start McGloin. With that said Id be happy if the Raiders traded him to the Rams. Hes talented but he doesn’t deserve to be a 3rd string QB.

  65. Steelers fan and this $@%^ just bothers me. Sorry Rams fans. Terrible for a promising first round draft pick’s career ending before even have a chance. Hopefully, Bradford can rebound and build his career from the ground up and be successful in doing so.

  66. I love my Rams but I am sooooooo frustrated and depressed!

What comes next can be surprisingly good sometimes.

  67. It’s disappointing for this to happen. Bradford is a talented QB that for reasons beyond his control has not been able to live up to that first round pick. Three offensive coordinators in his first 3 years. Played 33 of 48 games in four years, poor offensive line, no receivers to throw to. Steven Jackson on the decline. What drafted QB Has overcome all that and had a successful career?

  68. karma is a mother. Rams fans went a little overboard with the fleecing redskins bits. Now we skins might have a quarterback for you if the price is right..

  69. A bust for you uninitiated is when one is giving the opportunity time and time again and they stink up the joint. Bradford has shown ability, its just unfortunate he has been hit by the injury bug. Bust-hell no, injury prone-unfortunately yes. Injuries suck by the way.

  70. Hate it for Bradford but you think Rams rethinking not drafting a QB?
And…..now First Take will start Tebow rumors! Ugh….here we go!

  71. Remember Tony Eason? Bradford’s fragility reminds me of him.

Talented guy but just too slight of build for the NFL.

  72. Does anyone remember the last time the starting QB for the Rams tore their ACL in pre season and how that season turned out?
    Anyone?
    Anyone?

  73. Sorry to see that. I don’t think it was fixed after the first one because that wasn’t much of a hit.

I was looking forward to some great games against our Hawks this year. Not as likely anymore.

    Good luck St. Lou!

  74. He wasn’t even really hit! The guy fell next to him and brushed his knee. Hill is better than any of the other options. Fisher might have an interest in Vick at the right price, but he is unlikely to overpay for backups who have not lit up vanilla preseason defenses. The Rams may regret not taking Bortles. He has looked very good thus far.

  75. Tebow, Tebow, Tebow……….

Denver fan here. Tim is really a college running back trying to play qb1 in the NFL. Bright, charming, good past credentials, good guy………….dont do it! He doesnt have a NFL arm. His throwing mechanics look like an octopus falling out of a tree. We tried to love him, but the pro talent just wasnt there.

  76. Well, at least the Rams are getting their money’s worth in .500 Fisher who they’re paying more than any other coach in the league if I’m not mistaken. This will make it easier to make excuses for why they’ll be mediocre to bad again because we all know it’s never been his fault going back to his average 17 year coaching career with the Titans/Oilers.

  77. Did he actually not have a knee brace on that repaired knee? Hard to believe it could get hurt that seriously if he did, and hard to believe he could be that stupid. Modern knee braces are hardly limiting at all any more, and players are fools not to wear them more often.

  78. I’d be calling THE REDSKINS of Washington and offering them a 1st rdr for Cousins. He’d be a 5 yr starter and probably pretty successful. Unless ofcourse they let the cards fall and draft Winston next yr.

  79. Rams should go after Terrelle Pryor. I hope not cause I’m a Hawks fan but at 25yrs old and from what I have seen in preseason he’s better than Kap and the Rams are loaded. Hawks may just keep Terrelle because he would be the missing piece the Rams need.

  80. Shaun Hill can be an adequate QB if he’s still got something left in the tank. The Rams also still have a good, deep DLine and 1-2 RB combo teams will have to contend with.

  81. Sam Bradford is NOT done. Far from it. The guy is a great talent, and the Rams would make a big mistake giving up on someone they’ve invested so much. He could be another Jim Plunkett. What about Rob Gronkowski? Percy Harvin? People should have given up on those guys already, but they keep giving you reasons to hope for them. No one questions Bradford has an injury problem, but do you really want the Buffalo Bills to cash in on what the Rams have done? Give him a chance to pay back the dividends the Rams expected. He has the skills. I agree he should probably take a pay cut because he does owe the Rams. But to start all over again just doesn’t make sense. Come on, Sam! Get the surgery done and back into the rehab room asap. No time to waste believing the “experts.”
