Report: Matt Prater to be suspended four games

Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater is set to be suspended for the first four games of the 2014 season after violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.

According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, Prater violated the policy due to an alcohol-related offense. He had been in the league’s alcohol program since being charged with a DUI in 2011.

“I’ve made some mistakes,” Prater said. “I’m accepting full responsibility. I’ll learn from it and come back a better person. I want to apologize to my teammates, my coaches, the Broncos’ organization and the fans.”

Prater is not expected to appeal the suspension.

The suspension will span the first five weeks of the season as Denver has its bye in Week 4. It means the Broncos will be without Prater for their three home games against Indianapolis (Week 1), Kansas City (Week 2) and Arizona (Week 5), and on the road for their Super Bowl rematch with Seattle in Week 3.

Prater was second in the league in scoring last season with 150 points scored behind New England Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski (158).

Rookie Mitch Ewald is the only other kicker on Denver’s roster. He’s converted 1 of 2 field goals and all four extra points he’s attempted. However, he missed a 36-yard attempt Saturday night against Houston. They’ll need someone to handle kicking duties for the first quarter of the season with Prater out. Whether it will be Ewald or a veteran remains to be determined.

LOL. Now they’ve got their excuse when they lose to Seattle.

A kicker with a four game suspension is almost as unique as losing a player due to a faulty fax machine.

Unfortunately, it probably won’t slow down Denver’s march to post season frustration.

This is why you wait until the last weekend to hold your fantasy drafts lol.

What a joke the NFL is. I mean you are gonna suspend a guy 4 games for a DUI. It’s absurd.

Liquored up kicker…. You’d think he’d just get some Colorado pot to get high.

You mean he’s actually accepting responsibility for his actions and not making up some flimsy excuse? What a refreshing and unusual phenomena!

Ugh, I guess Denver didn’t have enough drama this off season…

Is Manning going to give us another “our idiot kicker who got liquored up” comment?

  18. patriottony says: Aug 24, 2014 8:44 AM

is really that hard to enjoy the glory of being an NFL player,,with a really nice paycheck? Why can’t these guys just enjoy their fortune, their family,,without being drug and liquor dependent jerks?

  19. bassplucker says: Aug 24, 2014 8:45 AM

Wow. 4 games for having a few drinks? Unless that “alcohol related offense” involved property damage or personal injury, that seems mighty harsh.

  20. bucrightoff says: Aug 24, 2014 8:56 AM

Just an idiot liquored up kicker

  21. grogansheroes says: Aug 24, 2014 9:02 AM

  27. general1santa1hannah1montana says: Aug 24, 2014 9:41 AM

I initially had thought he was suspended by the broncos for sucking so bad last night

  28. Ferdinand says: Aug 24, 2014 9:43 AM

So, I guess this means that this kicker, at least, is a real football player now.

  29. polegojim says: Aug 24, 2014 9:49 AM

Knew something was up… he looked and played unusually bad last night.

Knuckle balls, hooks, and a couple ‘barely made’ kicks… looked bad.

  30. davethebookie says: Aug 24, 2014 10:24 AM

NFL is ridiculous. Dude knocks his girlfriend out and drags her by her hair, gets a two game suspension…. Idiot liquored up kicker decides to throw one back and gets four. Wow. Message is clear! Okay to beat women, but don’t drink or smoke pot…

  31. kc571 says: Aug 24, 2014 10:24 AM

Great. Now Denver will sign Succoo when we cut him (keeping Santos).

  32. kferguson2002 says: Aug 24, 2014 10:26 AM

Damn I didn’t realize their first 4 games were that tough.

  33. dbjason6088 says: Aug 24, 2014 11:07 AM

Should have knocked his wife out and pulled her out the elevator

  34. td30 says: Aug 24, 2014 11:16 AM

2 games for beating your fiancĂ©…

  35. maestro1899 says: Aug 24, 2014 12:04 PM

According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, the NFL originally wanted a FULL YEAR SUSPENSION, but Prater’s attorney’s worked a deal for just 4 games.

And we all thought the Substance Abuse Policy (for which alcohol falls under) was set in stone with no room for negotiation!!!!

Since Roger the Dodger negotiated down a multiple alcohol offender (convicted of a DUI ), I’m curious to see his reasoning and how it pertains to Josh Gordon’s case.

  36. uglydingo says: Aug 24, 2014 12:12 PM

4 game suspension for alcohol? Somebody in Denver is doing a first class job of keeping a major story under wraps.

  37. taintedsaints2009 says: Aug 24, 2014 12:14 PM

Take away his record setting field goal

  38. bornahawker says: Aug 24, 2014 12:20 PM

Drink, Drank, Drunk, a fool and his money are soon parted. No mercy here.
    Go Hawks!

  39. thingamajig says: Aug 24, 2014 12:54 PM

He must be drinking buddies with the front office.

  40. ialwayswantedtobeabanker says: Aug 24, 2014 12:59 PM

Prater gets a 4 game suspension for drinking beer at home. The NFL reportedly wanted to suspend him for the full season, before begrudgingly settling on 4 games.

This is the same NFL that had VIDEO EVIDENCE of a player knocking his woman out cold, and then dragging her out of an elevator like a corpse. The knockout artist got a 2 game suspension.

I really really really can’t stand Goodell, and his lame arbitrary decisions.

  41. kupdeville says: Aug 24, 2014 1:23 PM

4 games for a guy who was drunk and has been in continuous rehab without incident and 2 games for a guy who beats the crap out of his girlfriend and drags her around. The priorities of the NFL are a mystery. I wonder what Bell will get for 20 grms??

  42. 20texans02 says: Aug 24, 2014 1:30 PM

I want to know why the media isnt all over this. Prater was facing 1 year long suspension but his lawyer got it reduced to 4 games. How did that get done so fast and Gordon is still waiting?

  43. jumbomesquite says: Aug 24, 2014 2:07 PM

Prater, Gordon, and Blackmon are getting huge suspensions, yet Ray Rice gets two games. So my guess is that Josh Brent gets one game. Keep up the good work, Goodell. Keep showing how much you care about the players themselves as well as the people of the community these players live in.

  44. scw1993 says: Aug 24, 2014 2:14 PM

The media isn’t all over this because the qb is NFL royalty.

  45. realitycheckbaby says: Aug 24, 2014 2:22 PM

    Let’s see…

    Getting drunk = 4 games

Getting drunk + knocking a woman cold by slugging her in the face and then dragging her body around by the hair = 2 games

Knocking a woman cold by slugging her in the face and then dragging her body around by the hair = -2 games.

    Is that about right Goodell?

  46. borisbulldog says: Aug 24, 2014 2:31 PM

Well, they call it the Mile High City for a reason!
