Bills release QB Thad Lewis

Thad Lewis AP

The Bills have further pared their QB ranks.

The club has released Thad Lewis, PFT’s Mike Florio reported Tuesday. Lewis was competing for the top reserve role behind starting quarterback EJ Manuel.

The Bills have not been happy with the play of their backup passers. On Monday, they added ex-Bears quarterback Jordan Palmer and released Dennis Dixon.

The 26-year-old Lewis has completed 17-of-33 passes for 168 yards with two interceptions and no TDs in exhibition play. He has been sacked three times.

The departure of Lewis leaves Manuel, Palmer and Jeff Tuel as Buffalo’s quarterbacks. The Bills host the Lions on Thursday evening.

Because the gap in talent between him and E.J. Manuel is insurmountable…. Just when I feel horrible about being a Jets fan, I get to remind myself, at least I’m not a Bills fan…

    Should have released EJ Manuel.

Funny bc this guy played great against the Bengals. We seem to make rookie QB’s look like Manning even though we have a top 5 D. I just don’t understand that.

    signed miami dolphins

Thad Lewis is better than Jordan Palmer. Heck, he might even be better than Manuel. And Jeff Tuel might be the worst Quarterback I’ve ever seen.

Not to worry Bills fans, next year’s draft is loaded with top flight talent at the QB position. With a top tier pick a certainty, I’m sure you’ll be able to draft….. oh wait.

I understand why Lewis is gone. But why add Palmer? Trade for someone who can play the position at a high level.

  12. bubbybrisket says: Aug 26, 2014 9:49 AM

How does Jeff Tuel still have a job?

  13. somethinghappeninghere says: Aug 26, 2014 9:49 AM

Meaning of course the Dolphins avenge the Bills sweep last year and beat the Bills twice. Thank you, Bills! Eat your Kiko-less and Byrd-less heart out, Super Mario!

  14. ubepunkedagain says: Aug 26, 2014 9:55 AM

The Browns could potentially have the first pick in the draft after that trade with Buffalo.

Wait till the season is at about week 6 and not week 5 of preseason to evaluate performance.EJ will play well.. He played decent for a rookie last year and putting in an expanded play book with a bunch of new parts can cause issues with timing. Once they get going this offense will be fine. I’d rather examine stats from the regular season then look at preseason.
Good luck to Thad he’ll catch on somewhere he’s not great but he’s a gamer and can compete. Adding Palmer may be temporary just to get info on the Bills opening day opponent. He may stick he may not .

    makes no sense

Thad Lewis > Jordan Palmer > Jeff Tuel

  17. andrewluck12 says: Aug 26, 2014 9:59 AM

Lewis is a solid back up. Bad move by the bills. He’ll catch on somewhere. Maybe Carolina

  18. swagger52 says: Aug 26, 2014 10:04 AM

If the Bills had to do it all over again…

They would draft Maybin and EJ Manuel again, because they are the Bills.

Tom Brady can no longer throw the deep ball, can no longer throw to the sideline, but who cares as long as he plays in a division with the Bills, Jets and Dolphins.

  19. coldwater32301 says: Aug 26, 2014 10:10 AM

With the right QB coach I believe he is the better QB out of all the other… SMH big mistake Bills… Well you will be inline for Jamies Winston or Marcus Mariotta at least…Indeed…

Because Jordan Palmer has spent two preseasons with the Bears absorbing Marc Trestman’s offense, which is light years ahead of what Buffalo is putting on the field. And because the Bills play the Bears in regular season Game 1. So there’s two legit reasons right there.

  21. iloveagoodnap says: Aug 26, 2014 10:13 AM

Bad move. Lewis is no world beater but he is better than Tuel.

The fact the Bills remain in love with the totally inept tool is baffling.

Thad Lewis started 5 games, 3 of which were against playoff teams, 2 of which were against the Dolphins. Lewis’ 2 wins vs Miami single handedly pushed them out of the playoffs. Meanwhile he took the Bengals to OT, and his other losses were to NE and NO both on the road- where lots of teams lose.

Tuel meanwhile gave the game away to the Chiefs 3 different times, and looked like Pee Wee against the Browns.

Same year, different bone headed moves for the Bills. Good thing they signed someone in the offseason to compete with Manuel though.

    What a joke.

    ……………
    1) The Bills are known for letting guys go when they shouldn’t have, and they catch on somewhere else and do very well. But good try.

    2) Your team has an 11-37 record in the last 3 years. Enough said.

  23. lukedunphysscienceproject says: Aug 26, 2014 10:19 AM

Someone needs to explain this leagues ongoing fascination with Jordan Palmer. How many times does THIS guy need to prove he’s not an NFL QB?

  24. EJ Makes Me Lose My Woods says: Aug 26, 2014 10:24 AM

Kyle Orton & David Garrard- guys that are available and would be very valuable for cheap.

Josh Freeman- may not work out, but at this point would play for nothing, and having him as a backup for no cost would be risk free.

But, the Bills instead opt for Jordan Palmer.

This is why the Bills suck. I cannot wait for the new owner to fire EVERYONE in that front office. 14 years and counting- clearly, you’re not cutting it anymore.

  28. corkspop says: Aug 26, 2014 10:43 AM

OK, I like that he’s coming from Chicago and that is the Bills first game. But he is 10 of 15 …. in his CAREER!

  29. bonerchamp says: Aug 26, 2014 10:58 AM

Bills fans are already looking at QBs coming out in ’15…..oh wait!

  30. jason9696 says: Aug 26, 2014 11:49 AM

He must’ve been brutal because Jeff Tuel is terrible.

  31. wallabear says: Aug 26, 2014 12:04 PM

Jimmy Clausen beat out Palmer in Chicago. Buffalo… what is your problem? lol

  32. garyeyee says: Aug 26, 2014 12:21 PM

It’s mostly coaching in my opinion. i.e; look at all the QBs that have failed over the years for the Bills. Now we are on some list as one of the top 2 teams that players would not play for unless they get paid double salary. Back to coaches… Reid with KC…one year there back in the playoff hunt, Chip for PHILLY…looking good so far with right decisions. Bilichick makes Matt Cassell look like a super star then gos to KC at that time and does nothing. Rex takes the Jets to 2 AFC games with Mark Sanchez???? Bills are like a starter team for players every year then move on and get coached up on another team and become very productive players. Lastly, How does a coach come to a head coaching job in the NFL and bring an OC that has no exp at any position AT ALL?. except a go for boy. Then…last year they had no QB coach for EJ or the back ups AT ALL? The OC , Hackett was also the QB coach!!! Are you kidding ! EJ got what ever the OC could help him with which is nothing ! But what about the back ups? They had nobody ! at least EJ got attention …Tuel was also a rookie and he had no one in his corner. He had to learn NFL style on his own, as well as Lewis but at least Lewis was in the NFL for a few years. Who puts a staff like that together? Two rookie QBs with no QB coach and a kid as OC with no coaching experience !!! and now Marrone is trying to catch up with all his mistakes in year one….. Buffalo Bills are a training ground every year and the fans are paying the price. WHAT A JOKE !. But… I will always be a fan of the Bills and hope for the best this year….You never know….

I totally agree with an earlier comment. I am looking forward to the sale being completed so everyone can be fired again. Last years draft was good besides the 1st rd pick. I know so many who disagreed with me and loved the 1st rd pick last year. Some of them are finally coming around to realize it was bad. And this years draft was absolutely horrible. I didn’t think this regime could do worse than the previous, as they were bad, but somehow they managed to do worse and set the team back even more.

  34. ncphinsfan says: Aug 26, 2014 5:43 PM

Dolphins Fans are rejoicing! Now we can get on to beating the Bills on a regular basis again. Lewis played like an all out expendable QB and it paid off. I hope he gets picked up. He certainly appears to be better than Tuel? In any event, Buffalo… I think Brady Quinn is available now if you want him. He is trying out for all 32 Teams, ya know.

  35. bluefox5 says: Aug 27, 2014 12:37 AM

Lewis is a solid backup who will get picked up by a better team than the Bills. I’m starting to think the only position the Bills are hurting more at than QB is GM…
