Saints confirm Victor Butler’s release en route to 75 players

The reports out of New Orleans that the Saints were going to release linebacker Victor Butler were correct.

The team announced Butler’s release on Tuesday afternoon as part of a series of moves that got the team down to 75 players. Coach Sean Payton explained why Butler’s number came up.

“The challenge was the reps and not having the reps needed to evaluate,” Payton said, via the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “We had a long talk yesterday. He’s frustrated I’m sure just because of the early [ankle] injury and the setback in training camp this year after the rehab. It’s always difficult, especially when a player doesn’t really have a chance to put his best foot forward.”

The Saints also confirmed tight end Travis Beckum’s tweet about his departure along with six other cuts.

Offensive lineman Manase Foketi, defensive end Rufus Johnson, quarterback Logan Kilgore, linebacker Kevin Reddick, defensive back Rod Sweeting and defensive end George Uko were also cut loose by the Saints. Reddick and Sweeting each saw action with the team last year with Reddick playing in all 16 regular season games as a backup and contributor on special teams.

Victor Butler was useless, a little surprised about Reddick, I guess that means other young linebackers are playing better…

Victor could have been quite a asset if he was healthy but this is the reality of the NFL . We can still re sign him when he’s healthy but for now we will work with what we have #sackman

He will be back with the Saints mid season, once healthy.
