Adrian Peterson: This is the offense I’ve been waiting for

Adrian Peterson AP

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson hasn’t taken any snaps in a game as part of Norv Turner’s offense yet, but he’s seen enough from the bench to feel very positive about the offensive coordinator’s vision.

Peterson spent the last three years as the focal point in Bill Musgrave’s plodding scheme and there was no point in that stretch where anyone felt like the Vikings could succeed offensively without Peterson on the field. This year, though, Peterson says his impression of the unit without him is “like, ‘Man, they don’t even need me.'” It’s little surprise, then, that Peterson is excited about what the future holds.

“This is going to be the best offense I’ve played in. This is the offense I’ve been waiting for,” Peterson said, via the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “We’ve got the pieces to facilitate moving the ball around. When Brett Favre was here, listen, when I saw those deep balls going up and guys making big plays, I was like, ‘Yeah!’ That makes your team very scary.”

The team has moved the ball well throughout the preseason with Matt Cassel throwing the ball to Cordarrelle Patterson, Greg Jennings and Kyle Rudolph. Those players should get even more chances when defenses also have to contend with Peterson and the variety of options in Minnesota is richer than its been in recent years.

As a Packer fan, this is scary. Adrian Peterson is the best RB in the league and its not even close. Watching the Vikings during the preseason, it should come down to the Vikings and Packers for the division title.

    Vikings Stats (from ESPN.com)

    2013 Offense
    13th – Total Yards
    T-14th – Total Points
    24.4 PPG

    2013 Defense
    31st – Total Yards
    32nd – Total Points
    30.0 PPG

Offense was NOT the problem last year. Offense should be improved with steady QB play, different scheme (Turner), and Patterson gaining ground in the offense.

Problem was DEFENSE. If they can improve even a little bit, Vikings should be in the thick of it.

  3. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Aug 27, 2014 12:14 PM

NOBODY waits for an awesome lead by TedMatt Casselwater. He’s just happy because he’s selfish and Turner’s offense relies heavily on the RB. Unfortunately it won’t make a bit of difference with the garbage they have at QB.

  4. zraskovich says: Aug 27, 2014 12:17 PM

Defense improved when we sent Alan Williams packing. That guy had no business running a defense.

  5. jcmeyer10 says: Aug 27, 2014 12:18 PM

To Steven’s point. That’s why I LOVED the Zimmer hire. If he can make that defense respectable, this could be a playoff team.

  6. f1restarter says: Aug 27, 2014 12:19 PM

Peterson is old, worn out, and has bad knees. His best days are behind him, no matter what the offense. The worst part is he spent them with the Minnesota Vikings.

Eddie Lacy at this point is a far better player.

  7. jlgsoccer says: Aug 27, 2014 12:19 PM

This is the defense I have been waiting for

  8. purpleguy says: Aug 27, 2014 12:22 PM

Again, despite all the QB shenanigans, the offense ain’t the issue for this team — it’s the defense. The Pack can flaunt Lacy, the Bears can hype Forte, and the Lions can put Bush out there, and all the stats in the world may be recited, but even the trolls know they are all second fiddle to AP just like every NFCN QB is junior to Rodgers.

  9. gojetsgo33 says: Aug 27, 2014 12:23 PM

Cassel will be good enough to keep them in the game via passing. Peterson will break the rushing record this year as no team will be able to keep 8 in the box. Defense will keep them in the game. Zimmer is a magician.

You’ve been waiting for this? Your QB is Matt Cassel. Really? You’re excited about that?

  11. thepftpoet says: Aug 27, 2014 12:24 PM

Can you feel it Vikings fans?

This is the year we’ve been finally waiting for.

We have the best personnel in the NFL.

The best roster talent on both sides of the ball.

The best RB in the entire game.

A top 5 rated Offensive Line according to PFF.

A future hall of fame QB in Teddy Bridgewater.

And a head coach who’s never not had a top 5 defense in the NFL.

All filled by the winning culture that’s been in Minnesota for years – with the 3rd best winning percentage in NFL history to prove it.

There’s nothing stopping us from a Super Bowl this year.

    And we’re already undefeated.

    3-0.

    Get used to it.

    The Vikings Dynasty has begun.

  12. v2787 says: Aug 27, 2014 12:25 PM

Now that Musgrave is gone, the Vikes actually have a real offensive coordinator that knows how to utilize the talent of his players. It’s gonna be fun to watch Norv Turner take things to a whole new level. The defense is improved (and Zimmer isn’t going to rest until it gets a lot better), but we still have some holes to fill and work to do there. If we can come up with a couple of missing defensive pieces I believe we can surprise a lot of people this season. I’ll be surprised if we collapse defensively at the end of games like we did last year–Zimmer will kill anyone who does that. AP deserves the chance to work with an imaginative offense that won’t allow other teams to key on him exclusively. Cassell is no Joe Montana, but he’s not Ryan Leaf either. If he can play at a decent level and if the defense can pull it together, the Vikings have a genuine shot at a really good season. I’m excited.

  13. crapsandviche says: Aug 27, 2014 12:26 PM

Vikes defense was horrible last year. They let so many games slip away at the last seconds… If they improve that, and find some stablility at QB they should improve…..still going to be tough in their division and plus the schedule they’ve been dealt.

  14. themagicfanguy says: Aug 27, 2014 12:27 PM

LOL only a pathetic Queen player would wish for an offense with a garbage QB like Cassel. Looks like last place AGAIN for Minnesota this year.

  15. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Aug 27, 2014 12:28 PM

Unfortunately it’s a QB driven league, not a RB driven one. The dropoff from Peterson to Lacy is like stepping off of a curve and we don’t even really know how much better he will be in his 2nd year.

The difference between Rodgers and any QB in the NFCN, especially the Vikings is like stepping off into the Grand Canyon.

  16. pete2112 says: Aug 27, 2014 12:29 PM

  20. codythao35 says: Aug 27, 2014 12:33 PM

Garbage? I wouldn’t dare say that if I were you bc you will see garbage Cassel beat out your team this year. The defense will improve dramatically, top 10 baby!!!

  21. In Teddy We Trust says: Aug 27, 2014 12:34 PM

As noted, the Vikings had an above average offense last year. That was with Ponder and Freeman starting 12 games, Musgrave’s business-card offense, and Patterson a raw rookie. They put up 48 points against Philadelphia without Peterson playing. With stability at the QB position, Turner running the offense, and Flash having a breakout season, this will easily be a top-10 offense, maybe top-5.

The defense blew a lot of games last year, but if the offense had gotten a first down or two while trying to run out the clock, the defense wouldn’t have been in a position to blow the game.

  24. In Teddy We Trust says: Aug 27, 2014 12:40 PM

You know what’s interesting. People always talk about having a better passing game to get the 9 guys out of the box so Adrian has more room to run. The year Favre played every game and the passing game was great, Adrian had the lowest yards per carry average of his career (4.4). The year Ponder started every game, Adrian had his highest yards per carry (6.0). I think it’s because he gets a lot more long runs when the line is stacked against him, so once he gets by the first line of defense, there isn’t much left to stop him from going a long way. We’ll probably see fewer 50- to 80-yard runs this year, but it will be a lot easier for him to pick up 5 yards on first and 10 or 3 yards on third and 2.

  25. frank433 says: Aug 27, 2014 12:42 PM

Kinda weird when a team loses consistently in the preseason, players say it’s only preseason. When the team wins, players like Peterson say this is what they have been waiting for. Now to the point of the defense, please tell me you homers don’t really believe that defense is going to carry them to the playoffs or beyond? Please just humor me and tell me you were joking.

Bears fan here. Vikings could be very scary this year because of great coaching. The talent/experience level at QB and maybe some weak personnel on defense is the only reason for some doubt. Every offense in the NFC North will be good. It’s the team that tackles that will win it. And having Zimmer gives the Vikes the edge there.

  31. arianil985 says: Aug 27, 2014 12:58 PM

Meanwhile our big brothers to the east have 3 RBs who can run, block, and catch. All we’re left with is a prima donna runner who’s too fragile to play in the preseason. Maybe Madden2K15 helped him like it did our failed backup QB!!!!

  32. luvmnsports2012 says: Aug 27, 2014 12:58 PM

That’s what they say about Peterson! That’s all you got?? Did you read the article where these quotes Came from? Did you see what his offseason workouts are all about? AP is far from old and bearing a major setback or injury he will again rise over all RBs in today’s league! Pansies

  33. vikesdynasty says: Aug 27, 2014 1:03 PM

I can’t believe the vikings brass couldn’t figure out what we could have had all those years. The one great year with Favre should’ve been the red flag. Hello we need a qb!!! All those wasted years while fans sat at home or in the dome screaming at the horrible coaching staffs. I mean the defense we’ve employed for a better part of a decade was atrocious. Frazier, Musgrave were horrible. Childress was the best we had since Green and that should say some thing. In 09 and 12 we would win in spite of the coaching and qb play. Thank god for ZImmer and Norv because for once we have a competent coaching staff. Most fans don’t understand how hard it is to watch from home and truly believe “I could actually do better than these coaches”.

  36. abninf says: Aug 27, 2014 1:07 PM

  39. dublindemonszfl says: Aug 27, 2014 1:11 PM

The problem with the defense is that the offense could not hold the ball. They could score, but couldn’t eat clock. The defense was on the field all game and understandably wore down in the end. This was all because Ponder was/is scared and would run away.

  44. nflpoker says: Aug 27, 2014 1:15 PM

True, the defense will be better, but one big problem was the Viking offense was next to last in time of possession last year. That can’t help a defense in the last couple minutes of a game. Not everything was the D’s fault. Need to know how to close out a game.

  45. smartestmanonthecinder says: Aug 27, 2014 1:16 PM

The coaching upgrades on both sides of the ball are the story of the offseason for MN. Norv Turner will do just fine with the talent he has there, QB position included. The real questions are (probably in order)…

    – After only a single draft+FA period, is there enough talent on the defensive roster to make Zimmer’s D work?

    – How effective will Zimmer be as a HC as opposed to just a DC, particularly given that he’s expected to have a heavy hand in the day-to-day running of the defense.

I expect improvement from the Vikes this season, likely +/-1 game from .500, maybe even a playoff appearance. But I think they need another offseason of talent acquisition, growth, and some stability of system before they become a dangerous team.

The offense WAS the problem. There were too many 3-and-outs with Ponder running the offense last season. That meant the Defense spent too much time on the field early, which opposing offenses exploited, and then faded late in games. The Vikings offense got too many garbage points/yardage when the game was lost and the other team had 2nd stringers in key positions. You cant just look at stats at face-value. You have to look at the circumstances.

The problem with “the offense is good the defense just needs to be respectable for this to be a playoff team” is… every team in the NFC north already has a better offense, and did last year. The Bears were only outscored by the Broncos, the Packers even without Rodgers for a big chunk of the season had a top 10 offense, and the Lions had a better offense than the Vikings last season and actually added weapons this year.

Now is the time for all football fans to be optimistic, but the reality still is outside of AP..nobody on the Vikings even starts on any other NFC north offense and its hard to see how the Vikings’s NFL worst defense is any better than any other defense in the division.

I see the division a two way race between the Vikings and Bears with the Lions as the dark horse. I’ve acknowledged good Packer teams in the past and I think ARodge is the best QB of the division and maybe the conference. But there’s literally nothing else on that team. I think their window’s closed, especially with that defense.

Lions are solid, with a terrible coach. Vikes have weakness on offense and defense, (QB, Corner), but while I’d say the Bears have the better offense, their D is worse.

All that said, I think NorseDiv is gonna kill each other this year as there’s alot of parity with no wild cards coming out of it.

No garbage yds/pts there at all. Carolina, Cincy, and the G-Men, we didn’t accumulate much yds/pts at ANY time in those 3 games. Det and Seattle, we never scored after halftime, leaving the home game against the Pack as the only game left to pile up ALL THOSE YARDS and points. In that game we generated a whole 2 TD’s after halftime. So, now that we have that cleared up, we can once more state, unequivicably, that most of our issues last year revolved around the Defensive side of the ball, especially late.

The Defense has looked remarkably different this preseason. Not just in yds/pts, but in the fact that opponent’s passes are being contested. I am not worried about the offense at all. We will score, but getting off the field defensively after 3rd downs will be the key to this season.

It’s going to be sad to see all these Vikings fans vanish with an 0 – 3 start next month!

he reality still is outside of AP..nobody on the Vikings even starts on any other NFC north offense
    ______

Kyle Rudolph is the best tight end in the division and it isn’t even close.

Flash Patterson is certainly better than Golden Tate. If he played for the Packers or Bears, they would start three wide receivers every game.

Matt Kalil, John Sullivan, Brandon Fusco, and Phil Loadholt are among the best at their positions in the division. You’re seriously telling me the Packers’ rookie fifth-round pick who is being forced into action is going to start at center ahead of Sullivan?

Re InTeddyWeTrust “You know what’s interesting. People always talk about having a better passing game to get the 9 guys out of the box so Adrian has more room to run. The year Favre played every game and the passing game was great, Adrian had the lowest yards per carry average of his career (4.4). The year Ponder started every game, Adrian had his highest yards per carry (6.0)…..”

I agree with what you’re saying, but also 1) Hutch was playing with a bad shoulder in the Farve years, and was getting older 2) When AD had his huge year, wasn’t Kahlil at LT, and Felton had a pro-bowl year as a FB, IIRC. Also, wasn’t Kliensasser still the blocking TE?

New coaches and new backup QBs are always the toast of a town that’s had a lot of lousy football recently.

When the Vikings finish in last place again this year for the 4th time in the last 5 years, Mike Zimmer will be forever known as The Placebo.

    @In Teddy We Trust
Kyle Rudolph with a career high of 493 yards receiving? That Kyle Rudolph? And Matt Kalil, John Sullivan, Brandon Fusco, and Phil Loadholt?

Christian Ponder was sacked more times in 9 games than Matt Stafford (who dropped back and passed almost more than any QB in the entire league) was in 16.

Maybe that’s the disconnect between Vikings fans.. and well the rest of the world. You guys are actually convinced that your team is good… That your players are “the best” even though statistically players like Bennett in Chicago could have taken off half the season and matched Kyle Rudolphs production.

But here, we can say Loadholt could maybe find a starting job, and yes Sullivan could maybe be in a position battle. But at the end of the day, for all “hype” about how great your offensive line is supposed to be.. its been pretty.. average/below average and there’s no reason to think that’ll be any different this year.

Guess who NORV said was the MOST improved player on the offense. Teddy? Cassel? CP?

    Nope.

AD !!!! He has been doing a lot of new things with him that AD has fully embraced.

I predict AD will run less than he did last year, but will have more RUN yardage than EVER, plus a lot of passing yardage too. Oh don’t forget CP and our TE and …. (with a decent D that actually gets a pick now and then.)

If the injury bug stays away this very well could be the surprise team of 2014.

Wow, If he’s right the Vikes have a real shot at third in the division this year!

  90. mnvikingsfan says: Aug 27, 2014 10:28 PM

Notice how the “REAL” football fans say the Vikes are a much improved team and it is only the GB Trolls that constantly say garbage about the Vikings?

That pretty much proves what others have said before…..The GB fan base is scared and rightfully so. The Vikes have an OUTSTANDING coaching staff, a backup QB that (along with Peterson) will become the face(s) of the franchise, and a WR in Patterson that will have defenses scrambling.

This might not be the Vikings year, but it isn’t too far off in the future!!!

In other news the Vikings still have never won a championship. Geaux Saints!

This team goes as far as Matt Cassel takes them

    It is known.

Pre-season or no… there are two UNDEFEATED teams in the NFL… and the packers, bears, lions, saints, seachickens are NOT one of them.

Ok all you people that are saying vikings will be last in division because of qb spot and cassell is like stepping into grand canyon from rodgers…1st of all cassel and rodgers ont play at the same time…its the vikings defense that will have him on his ass and I have a feeling all u viking haters are in for a big suprise this year…
