Ahmad Brooks needs to lose some weight

49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks made the Pro Bowl and second-team All Pro last season, but the team isn’t worried that his personal success has gone to his head.

If anything, they’re worried that it has gone to his belly. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Tuesday that he hopes Brooks can turn in a repeat of his 2013 performance, but he’s concerned that Brooks is carrying extra weight that has been “holding him back” this summer. Brooks agreed that he needs to trim up and blamed something familiar to many of us  when discussing why his weight has become an issue this season.

“It’s all about eating right,” Brooks said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “I’m 30 years old now, so my metabolism has slowed down. So it takes a little bit longer (to lose weight) than before. … Some of the things I used to get away with, I can’t get away with any more. Yeah, I do have to lose some weight. Is it affecting me? I don’t know. But, yeah, maybe a little bit.”

Brooks said it is unrealistic that he’ll lose the needed weight, 5-10 pounds by his estimation, before the start of the regular season. With NaVorro Bowman out for at least the first six weeks of the season and league discipline for Aldon Smith still a possibility, the team will need a productive Brooks at any weight.

  1. Or… You could have stayed in shape during the off season, you make decent enough money for it to be a priority…it’s only your job…

  2. I wonder how much Wilhoite or Borland can contribute. Lemonier has shown he can play on the outside for Aldon.

  3. Do Seahawks fans really think calling the San Francisco 49ers the “Santa Clara” 49ers is gonna ruffle feathers? Or a super witty rhyme (one of which, I’ve never heard before “forty whiners”)? I pretty sure there were probably more 49ers fans that reside in Santa Clara than the entire Seahawks fan base before 2012.

  4. this guy has always struck me as lazy, getting by on his physical talents alone. hard to stay productive into your 30s with that kind of approach.

  5. Read the transcript by Vic Fangio; for as tight-lipped as the rest of the coaching staff is, (within the niners and the NFL as a whole) it’s refreshing to see a coach call it like it is. He called out players who needed to improve and what they needed to improve on, and this weight thing – hey, at least he’s being honest.

Whatever it takes to motivate an athlete. And with 2/3 best players on defense missing in action, motivation can’t hurt.

    I love it.

  6. niners are done. put a fork in ’em. their only saving grace may be bradford’s knee injury. st louis is no longer competition for wc, niners probably get 2 wins vs stl and could sneak into wc spot as a result.

  7. The single most underrated defender in the NFL. Ahmad is ALWAYS there ready to go every week banged up or not. A key member of a dominant defense. Late bloomer who has really taken his game to the highest level the last two seasons. Here’s to another great all pro season Ahmad.

  8. Things are looking good Santa Clara. So far, Gabby has outplayed Kraepernick; Offensive line has more holes than Swiss cheese; can’t get Boone back; lose Dorsey; Bowman is out; your healthy LB is fat; can’t get the turf right; look disjointed on offense.

Other than that, looking good SC, looking good!

    Go Hawks!

  9. So does the entire Seawagon fanbase! The obesity epidemic of those keyboard warriors & beastly women up in the Pacific Northwest is alarming.
As for 55 he will be ready for the opener!

  10. “Do Seahawks fans really think calling the San Francisco 49ers the “Santa Clara” 49ers is gonna ruffle feathers?”

I’m not sure bringing it up is the best way to demonstrate your nonchalance.
