Sammy Watkins suffers rib injury in preseason finale

Sammy Watkins AP

The Bills saw one of their key offensive starters depart their exhibition finale with an injury.

Rookie wideout Sammy Watkins will miss the rest of Thursday’s game vs. Detroit with a rib injury, BuffaloBills.com reported.

It’s unclear whether Watkins has aggravated his bruised ribs — a preexisting injury he’s dealt with this summer — or suffered a new injury. He left the game not long after being hit in the upper body by Lions linebacker Ashlee Palmer on an incomplete pass in the first quarter.

The Bills played some first-teamers on offense, including quarterback EJ Manuel, in this, their fifth preseason game of the summer. The upside of such an approach is perhaps tied to the offense’s future performance, though it is not easily quantified. The downside to the approach, though, is clear, and the Bills have to hope Watkins was merely shaken up in this meaningless game 10 days before the regular season opener at Chicago.

Maybe the Bills are trying to get the first pick in the draft so they can pick up a QB for Watkins?

The Browns will enjoy their top 5 pick from Buffalo. Ray Farmer just might turn the Browns around.

There is nothing worse than a bad injury to a key player in pre season. Just so aggravating.

Let this guy sit and watch until the Bills can find a QB. Manuel will get him killed. Where is Ryan Fitzpatrick these days?

I understand that you trade a first round pick for an elite WR, but Watkins tore his ACL before, was busted for weed, and has nagging injuries throughout his playing days. I’ve watched him here in Ft. Myers, and while he is good, he’s not mortgaging your first round pick good, as Julio Jones or Johnson good!

Going to be such a long season. What deal did Ralph make with devil? Hopefully once it’s sold, so ends said deal.

It’s difficult to feel much pity for Marrone. He keeps his friend as Special Teams coach, despite the fact that Danny Crossman is the worst Teams coach in the NFL. He starts Sammy Watkins as Watkins is recovering from a delicate injury. He loses nearly every challenge flag he throws. He says he’s not going to ask Palmer about the Bears offense — and he actually means it.

I’m reasonably confident that anyone I know could do all those things badly for less than $3,000,000 per year. How did he get to this level, exactly? Can’t believe the Bills let Pettine walk out the door.

The only surprise – with Doug Marrone as head coach – is that he was injured on an actual pass play and not covering a 4th-and-1 punt from the Detroit 37.

Why would Marrone play him in the final PRESEASON game? SMH.

I’m no Browns fan, but perhaps they were quite wise to pass on Watkins and earn a probable top-five pick for next year.
