Bucs punt kicker Connor Barth for younger alternative

The Buccaneers continue to do business faster than anyone, as they’ve made the majority of their cuts already.

The latest is kicker Connor Barth, per the Tampa Bay Times.

That leaves the kicking job to Patrick Murray, a second-year player from Fordham.

The 28-year-old Barth had been with the Bucs since 2009, but they’re going with the younger (i.e. cheaper) version. He was franchised and given a four-year, $13.2 million deal in 2012, but spent last year on the non-football illness list after he tore his Achilles in an offseason charity basketball game.

Barth’s been good enough for long enough that he’ll likely be a regular on the Tuesday tour of unemployed kickers, which we envision traveling from city to city together in a small car or bus.

    Kluwe wants an explanation.

Ooooh another leg for the Dolphins to take a look at.

The only explanation is that he was cut for his activism.

He tore his Achilles last year playing basketball in an authorized event. Kicker tearing Achilles? Killer. He lost in the fun competition on the Bucs fan day (“Practice Night”). Oh, he’s expensive. I called this one last year. Good guy, accurate. Not a lot of punch in that leg though.

Very accurate…down the middle. That’s his strength. Problems: Not a lot of leg. Lots of arc on his kicks; even on his shorter kicks, they’re already tracking down as they pass through the uprights, even those from shorter range. Maybe good for 55 yards max, but really pushing it. He can fall short when you need him most. Torn Achilles last year? Killer. The rookie, Pat Murray, has a stronger leg and by all accounts, same accuracy. We will miss Conner, but its a good call.

Coming off a major leg injury, can’t do kickoffs, costs more then $3 million/year . . . this isn’t exactly a shock to anybody.

Barth would be best in a warm weather city. His leg strength is not conducive to late season conditions in the north.

Dang, someone beat me to the Chris Kluwe crack. . . . .

Cost too much and is coming off of a big leg injury. Use this money for McCoy extension.

A McCoy extension would actually free up cap space.
