Browns announce initial 53-man roster

Connor Shaw, Austen Lane AP

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier said recently that he thought the Browns should put Connor Shaw into the mix for the starting quarterback job.

The Browns may have seen the Gamecocks get steamrolled by Texas A&M on Thursday night or they may have just dismissed Spurrier’s NFL acumen based on his experience in Washington because they decided to move on from Shaw on Saturday.

The undrafted free agent was one of the players cut in Cleveland as the Browns set an initial 53-man roster that includes Rex Grossman as the third quarterback behind Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel.

In addition to the previously reported departures of running back Dion Lewis, wide receiver Nate Burleson, running back Chris Ogbonnaya and cornerback Leon McFadden, the Browns also parted ways with defensive backĀ Josh Aubrey, defensive lineman Calvin Barnett, defensive lineman Jacobbi McDaniel, offensive lineman Justin Staples, offensive lineman Reid Fragel, offensive lineman Garrett Gilkey, offensive lineman Donald Hawkins, linebacker Zac Diles, linebacker Jamaal Westerman, tight end/fullback MarQueis Gray, offensive lineman Alex Parsons, offensive lineman Abasi Salimu, wide receiver Willie Snead and tight end Emmanuel Ogbuehi. Cornerback Isaiah Trufant was placed on injured reserve.

Shaw outplayed all three of those stiffs. Hope he gets picked up elsewhere.

The Browns QB situation is far from stable at this point.

Shaw will be on the Browbs practice squad, if he’s not snatched up.

If they do, Shaw will be their starter or promoted to 2nd on the depth chart behind the legendary Grossman.

Shaw played against 5th stringers in garbage time running a prevent defense. He outplayed no one.

Great pick Dumbardi and Bozo Banner of McFadden. Could have had Tyrann Mathieu who i was yelling at the TV to draft.

and of course the Clowns make a stupid pick and Im right again and they lose another 10+ games.

its amazing how these guys get paid a ton of money to do their job and i would have picked better players just watching games on TV.

And Wallace the RT that gave up the sack of Johnny to Michael Sam on the worst attempt at a block by an offensive lineman I’ve ever seen didn’t get cut? Lmao.

Attention from who? The guy played in 1 game vs guys trying to make special teams.

This was a no brainier decision. You can only keep 3 QB’s on your roster with 1 and 2 being set in stone with Hoyer who earned the job against starters and Manziel their top QB draft pick. If your #3 choice is between a guy not good enough to get drafted or a Super Bowl QB past his prime I can’t think of too many who’re going with the undrafted guy. Rex Grossman is better than any undrafted free agent.

Shaw will come back to haunt the Browns, just wait and see.

Hope Shaw lights em up somewhere. He’s got that something that’s hard to quantify, but makes him a special player.

You Cleveland idiots don’t expect me to believe that Grossman is better than Shaw, give me a break. Choices like this is why the poopies are never better than 6 wins in a season.
