Packers keep three quarterbacks

AP

Reports on Saturday indicated the Packers were only going to keep two quarterbacks on their initial 53-man roster, but those reports have been proven incorrect.

The Packers unveiled their roster on Saturday afternoon and it includes Aaron Rodgers, Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien. Both Flynn and Tolzien saw time with the Packers offense as they cycled through options after Rodgers was injured. Having two guys on hand will lead to less scrambling if things unfold that way again this year, although one imagines Green Bay would rather just have Rodgers in there all 16 games.

Green Bay got down to 53 players by cutting safety Chris Banjo, wide receiver Kevin Dorsey, linebacker Jake Doughty, tackle John Fullington, center Garth Gerhart, wide receiver Alex Gillett, defensive tackle Carlos Gray, running back Michael Hill, linebacker Adrian Hubbard, guard Jordan McCray, safety Tanner Miller, tight end Justin Perillo, running back LaDarius Perkins, defensive end Luther Robinson, cornerback Jumal Rolle, tackle Jeremy Vujnovich, wide receiver Myles White and cornerback Ryan White.

They also placed tackle Aaron Adams, linebacker Nate Palmer, tight end Jake Stoneburner and defensive tackle Khyri Thornton, a 2014 third-round pick, on injured reserve.

  1. I hope they pick up a decent veteran center before the season starts, or I fear Aaron Rodgers will be spending a lot of time on his backside this year.

  2. Jumal Rolle has to feel like someone kicked him in the groin. TT and his love of his draft picks blinds him.

Demetri Goodson was not good, son. Rolle played quite well. I get that Goodson was drafted with his potential in mind but Rolle clearly outplayed him.

MM said in his post season presser that “pure production” would not be the full litmus test to make this team and Goodson over Rolle and Carl Bradford being on this team, period, is the proof.

  3. It simply doesn’t matter how many QB’s the packers keep. The Vikings are in the midst of True World Dominance!

For 5 more days, anyways. At that point, the season begins and the Vikings will return to their rightful place at the bottom of the barrel.

    Skolololol!!!!!!!

  4. We’re looking forward to a great season were going to make the playoffs, and then we’ll lose to the niners wooohoooo go pak no!

I get the feeling not many teams are going to be losing to the 49ers this year.

  5. It’ll be kinda hard sacking the quarterback, when your defensive line is getting flattened by Eddie Lacy and the hogs up front. Let’s get this party started! 😉

  6. How about an article about the packers 7th round pick that made the team? Or do you only dedicate articles to 7th rounders who don’t make their squads? #equalityforstraights

  7. ill be honest. Tolzien and Flynn, although each knows The McCarthy System and could function if called upon…none could lead the packers to even close to post season if Rodgers is lost for the season.

  8. Chase Daniel has more arm talent than Flynn… and Tolzien by comparison has a rocket when compared to Flynn…Tolzien has a quick trigger but has a weird arm angle with his release.

  9. How many games before the Packers lose Rodgers? They’ve made no moves on a terrible Oline, will be tough to keep AR upright with all the pass rushers in the Conference.

  10. The Packers are a complete joke! HAHAHA They got nothing. Hoping Peppers is gonna save that horrendous D. LMAO Good luck with that. Poop Packers finish last in their division.

That’s comical. They were a fairly good O line last year, with their best tackle on IR. He’s back, so I’d say that’s 1 move. And 2 of the 3 best pass rushers in the division are on the Packers.

  12. @tdreheri – “2 of the 3 best pass rushers in the division are on the Packers”

MN Allen 11.5 – Led the division
    MN Robison 9.0 – 2nd
    DET Ansah 8.0 – 3rd
GB Matthews 7.5 – 4th in division (42nd in league)

Which two play for the Packers?

    ……………………

Like I said a minute ago they think that Peppers is some God like creature that didnt get dumped on them.

  14. Talent of pass rushers does not equal number of sacks. 3 most talented pass rushers in the division are Allen, Matthews, and Peppers, in no particular order.

  15. @tdreher1 “Talent of pass rushers does not equal number of sacks”.

What kind of logic is that? Its like saying talent at QB doesn’t equal passing yards or wins. With that logic you can pretty much plug in any packer at any position because results don’t really matter.

  16. “Talent of pass rushers does not equal number of sacks.”
    ————————–

    This part is true.

Just like on offense, the quality of the surrounding defense can go to hurt or help a player’s stats.

  17. If the NFL increases the roster size to 55 I think each team should be required to carry three QBs. It’s crazy that if your starter and the back up go down a team has to sign a guy that’s never played in the system before.

  18. Green Bay’s depth is so good that several of those players are probably going to end up being snagged by other teams.

  19. I’m blown away that they dumped Gillette and Myles White. They both played great in the preseason. Really surprised.

Also surprised that MN trolls still talk about our defense when it’s ranked better than theirs.

  20. At first I was against keeping 3 QBs. Then I realized whoever the Packers cut likely would have been signed by the Vikings and then be named their week 1 starter, thus making them significantly better.

TT is clearly the most savvy GM in the NFC North

  21. In fact, I’m thinking as long as Rogers is your QB you all should change the Packers team uniform colors to ‘dandi’lion yellow and pistachio green. FABULOUS!!!

  22. Packers had to keep all three. If they released either Tolzien or Flynn, the Vikings would immediately sign them and they would be a HUGE upgrade to the Vikings.

    Rodgers>Tolzien>Flynn>… a bunch of other qbs > Cassel>Bridgewater>Ponder.

  23. Scared 49ers fans pretending to be packers fans lmao basically the crazy ex girlfriend. It’ll all change starting this year when you guys have to start paying players.

  24. So if Rodgers goes down, you get 1-2 games with Matt Damon before he fakes an elbow injury and you’re left with the guy who wrote LOTR. Good to know.

  25. I can’t believe these Viqueen trolls are still trying to anger us lol. It doesn’t anger us. I watch a Kevin Hart special to get me warmed up and then I come to PFT to finish the night with a great laugh. I thank you classless Viking fans.

  26. So many unknowns…….except for one; The Green Bay Packers own the Minnesota Vikings. Bad draft picks? Maybe, doesn’t matter. Poor defense? Maybe, doesn’t matter. Mediocre coaching and management? Maybe, doesn’t matter. Hate all you want. Lie all you want. Insult and put down all you want. One fact remains……The Packers own the Vikings.

  27. You guys pulled a tough one for the opener. I’ll be on business in De Forest, WI watching the game (I’ll make sure to leave my Vikings jersey at home). Good luck on Thursday and for the season. Stay injury free–when we beat you twice this year we don’t want any excuses why! 🙂

    Rodgers>Tolzien>Flynn>… a bunch of other qbs > Cassel>Bridgewater>Ponder.

how good was he the 7 weeks after the bears rocked him?

  29. Smart move by the Packers. In all seriousness, Zimmer is putting together defensive schemes to hit and rattle the best qbs we face. Expect your qbs to be under extreme pressure this season and taking some hits.Unlike our past Cover 2 1940s schemes did…

  30. The Green and Yellow secretly fear the Purple and Gold. You know you do!
You are afraid that Linval and company will cause Lacy to gain about 9 total yards against us.
And that Cassell/Cordarrell will run up the score.
And that AP will once again (or twice) get 200 yards against you.
And that Barr will chase down boy wonder until he throws an INT to Audie Cole.
Be askeerd, be very askeerd of the impending sweep.

  31. 2 great backups, and one future HOF’er. McCarthy has done it again.

Packer fans know that they are the chosen ones, and need not pay any attention to all the peasants in hapless and tasteless MN.

  32. Man, I just can’t wait til the season starts to stop this endless, pointless, baseless rambling of these Viking, Bear and Lions fans. Short of a AR going down, the Pack will once again win (I didn’t say dominate) this division. I don’t see anybody in our division going beyond the division title. It’ll be the ‘Hawks or ‘Niners in the NFC.
