Ray McDonald: The truth will come out, I’m a good-hearted person

Indianapolis Colts v San Francisco 49ers Getty Images

Ray McDonald, the 49ers defensive lineman who was arrested for domestic violence this weekend, spoke briefly with a local television station and said he hopes people know that he’s a good man.

After he was released from jail, McDonald talked to KTVU but would not go into any specifics about his case.

“The truth will come out, you know. I can’t say too much right now but the truth will come out. Everybody knows what kind of person I am. I’m a good-hearted person,” McDonald said.

McDonald is facing felony domestic violence charges. Police say he was arrested early Sunday morning after police were called to his home. He is accused of striking his pregnant girlfriend.

The arrest came just days after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged that he did not act strongly enough in response to the domestic violence incident involving Ravens running back Ray Rice. Goodell has said that he will take stronger action in the future when players are accused of domestic violence, suggesting that unless McDonald is fully exonerated, he is facing a lengthy suspension.

So…he’s saying there’s a chance he didn’t actually strike his pregnant girlfriend? Well that sure would be welcomed news…

Let’s not judge and convict based on sensationalist media reporting just yet. What I DO know is if a call is made to the police regarding a domestic dispute they WILL arrest someone and take them to jail. Usually the man. Let’s see what the real facts are before convicting someone shall we?

  22. maestro1899 says: Sep 1, 2014 12:14 PM

Didn’t PFT report yesterday that there were a few teammates that were witnesses to the incident?

If they were, all Jim Harbaugh has to do is interview them each individually to find out the truth. I don’t think multiple teammates would lie to Harbaugh if they witnessed the assault, knowing that they would get suspended themselves if they did lie to cover up the assault.

  30. purpleguy says: Sep 1, 2014 12:28 PM

It will be interesting to see if Harbaugh sticks with his stringent “don’t touch a woman on my watch stance”, or if that doesn’t apply to starters. Then again, we should know the answer, since he signed Chris Cook, who busted his girlfriend’s eardrum.

The nice guy blew it when he laid hands on his pregnant girlfriend. The evidence is a bruised neck and arms and the girl’s statement. There is virtually no way #91 steps on the field again this season for the 49ers, if ever.

  33. unislaya says: Sep 1, 2014 12:32 PM

Media is so desperate. Most state’s laws on domestic disturbances are vague in scope, but all have 1 simple requirement: if the cops get called for anything remotely domestic, someone must be arrested (usually the male).

I hope that Ray can clear his name through due process, and shame on him if he is guilty.

  34. sonoco says: Sep 1, 2014 12:36 PM

Using the term “striking” to describe the accusation is a bit TMZish. Many a man have been detained and charged for causing restraint related bruises in self-defense . . . for instance around the wrists. Maybe he punched her in the face, I don’t know. But using the word “striking” paints an ugly lasting picture in peoples minds that may be completely inaccurate. FWIW.

While this is true for most states. When they get called the man usually goes to jail on a domestic charge.

What you and many are missing here is this is FELONY domestic abuse. If they arrested him on felony domestic abuse there is a reason for it and its not because he simply pushed her off of him.

I just watched the news and seen a video where some guy recorded his ex girlfriend attacking him with a metal pole for having a new girlfriend. She left the scene and told the cops he attacked her. His mother brought the video to the police station, but they wouldn’t even look at it.

Ironically, it was former 49ers HC who was banished for trying instill discipline among players who clearly lack character. Harbaugh borrowed a page from the Al Davis “Just Win, Baby” handbook because he doesn’t know how to hold adults accountable for their behavior. He doesn’t deserve a contract extension. As for the other Harbaugh, he will remain with Baltimore as long as Ozzy (another patron of the Al Davis school of thought) is the GM.

People don’t realize the CBA will prevent the 49ers from immediately suspending him. Also, Harbaugh is not in control of internal discipline with the Franchise so criticizing Harbaugh for how he handles it is completely unjust, all that Harbaugh could do is limit his playing time, but I’m sure there are snap count clauses in his contract and the players union could come after SF if he does that as the legal issues are not performance related.

    Are you serious?
If a woman you are in a relationship spits on you and punches you, you do not need to hit her back, or restrain her and leave bruises. You walk away, end the relationship and no longer put yourself in a position to be around her, ever! That is what a smart MAN does.
Men need to take care of their business like men, not like pimps. Especially when there are millions of reasons (dollars) to just walk away.

“The police are not releasing their findings until Tuesday, which means the League has one day to digest and react. If it takes them longer, he’s allowed to play.”

The league can, and does, issue suspensions under the personal conduct policy regardless of the outcome of any criminal proceedings. Roethelisberger was never charged, but the district’s attorney’s report was sufficient to suspend him.

And of course, personal conduct issues may not involve criminal due process at all.

That said, there’s no chance McDonald doesn’t play. The league doesn’t need a conviction, but if it’s a criminal case they always let due process conclude before taking action.

The only defense to domestic violence to train young men how to treat women.

I don’t pretend know anything about Ray McDonald, but many athletes grew up with violent fathers or step-dads and that’s all they have ever seen. That’s their model of how to treat a woman.

Suspending guys after they do it doesn’t prevent women from being abused. The NFL needs to rehab these players the same way they help drug addicts in addition to the punishment so they never do it again and they need to launch some programs for rookies.

  82. thalter21 says: Sep 1, 2014 5:43 PM

    Niner fan here,

First of all there is no excuse for laying a hand on a female.
I don’t care what happened no excuse. The second thing is,
Everyone needs to wait to hear what happened. People tend to forget that media and everything sometimes assumes things and reports it. Although there are pictures of him in jail and everything. Remember what happened with Kaepernick and Crabtree? All these huge allegations turned out to be nothing.

Second of all for everyone saying that Harbaugh controls how much playing time he has or what will happen he has no control. There are certain CBA rules when it comes to how many snaps they can play and what can be done. He does not tolerate guys abusing women which should not be tolerated at all!

In conclusion, if he is found guilty he needs to be cut. Niners have two monsters coming in: tank and dial. Niners will be just fine and when the second half of the season comes around watch out!

If she lied she should be punished. The fine…Whatever the payoff was to not press charges! Simple.

The incident occurred at 2 a.m. in the morning. What’s that tell you? A bunch of drunks making bad choices. Whether there was domestic violence, I don’t know but I do know when the music is blasting and calls to police go down at 2 a.m. there are a number of folks drunk out of their minds..

I’ve read most of your comments. Some fair, some unfair. Let’s not be so quick to bash (no pun intended) the man. I want to hear what actually happen. I am quite sure that most of the men on this post has found themselves in a situation where a women may have bent the truth a little because it always works to her advantage. Case in point look how you all are responding. Truth be known, some women lie. To gain custody of a child. To get a man arrested. It happens all the time. Now add the money factor. Remember the Arizona Cheerleader last year? (Megan Welter) who called the police on her boyfriend? She clamed that he was abusing her, she even added if her boyfriend had a weapon. She responded he has a knife….That could have turned out very badly for him. They were on the verge of arresting him until he provided a video. Turns out she was the aggressor. She was arrested instead. Without that video everyone would have been on this guys case. Women don’t lie, right?
