Greg Robinson not in Week One starting lineup

The second overall pick in the draft will start the season on the second string.

Rams guard Greg Robinson, a tackle whom the team has moved inside, has moved behind Rodger Saffold on the depth chart at left guard, via Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-DispatchDavin Joseph will start at right guard.

Joseph, who joined the team in May, makes it easier for the Rams to take it slowly with Robinson, who’s still adjusting to life in the NFL, where the playbook and the protections is far more complicated than the offense at Auburn.

Still, it’s a disappointment for the second player off the board to not be starting.  If the Rams were able to capture a Mulligan, they’d surely take the quarterback who won’t be starting in Jacksonville.

Kings ransom for RG3 and don’t draft even a fourth round QB.

Then with #2 overall pick you draft a guy who doesn’t even start?

How does the Ram’s GM still have a job?

  4. billsbackto81 says: Sep 2, 2014 7:09 PM

Why would anyone pick this guy over someone with the pedigree of Jake Matthews. smh….

  5. alshonbrandontandem says: Sep 2, 2014 7:10 PM

First round picks need to start (with the possible exception of QB’s). #2 overall picks not only need to start but need to be dominant. To not even break the starting lineup borders pathetic.

Greg Robinson? Who is this Greg Robinson of whom you speak? There must be some mistake. I’m pretty sure the only guy the Rams drafted is some guy named Sam.

  7. allidoiswin55 says: Sep 2, 2014 7:11 PM

Probably bc he hasn’t looked very good . He needs time to sit although he was a top 4 pick he still has work to do especially switching pistons .

  8. 6ball says: Sep 2, 2014 7:13 PM

Isn’t Robinson the guy who was taken 247 picks before Michael Sam? I’d forgotten about him.

  9. thejabronisayz says: Sep 2, 2014 7:15 PM

A used Styrofoam cup has more durability than Saffold has. I’ll bet that Robinson sees the field sooner rather than later.

Anyone declaring he is a “bust” is ignorant of what it takes to play OL in the NFL. It takes time to learn and to adjust to the intricacies of OL play. The Rams are going nowhere this year, due to competition, schedule and talent. Good luck to the ‘hawks, but to label this kid as a bust shows your lack of football IQ. Go baseball Cardinals.

  11. lmfaooooo says: Sep 2, 2014 7:25 PM

Now you see why the Patriots didn’t draft him?

  12. motown81 says: Sep 2, 2014 7:36 PM

No excuse for a offensive linemen drafted second overall not to be in the starting lineup. Even worse that they had to move him inside to a guard spot and he still isn’t starting. Wow!

  13. jwh8541 says: Sep 2, 2014 7:50 PM

don’t think he’s a bust (yet) but definitely a bad pick at 2. Sad thing is this is a repeat of the jason smith pick years before. different GM same dumb move. take the more sure guy don’t reach for some mythical upside.

He’s struggled, but since those are typical growing pains from a rookie, the Rams shouldn’t be worried by now, unless he pulls an Eric Fisher.

Since people are discussing QBs, STL had lots of chances to pick one, even if it wasn’t RG3, since they got an excellent deal and made it better by trading down with Dallas, but they should’ve at least brought some late competition, it’s easy to say that today but I believe they should’ve tried Foles or Wilson to compete against Bradford.

  15. mcconne77 says: Sep 2, 2014 8:07 PM

The second player drafted overall should be starting, especially an offensive lineman. You can’t miss on that high of a pick. The pressure really is on the Rams front office with all those RGIII picks, no backup for injury prone Bradford. Good luck this year Rams.

It could just be spin from the Rams, but the talk was that Davin Joseph is fully healthy again and had a very good preseason. Greg Robinson himself admitted he was having trouble absorbing the complexities of a pro playbook. His physical skills are undeniable and with the injury history of the Rams OL he’ll be in there sonner rather than later.

Shazier continues to look like the best pick of the draft.

  19. notthetroll says: Sep 2, 2014 8:52 PM

Wow. Top 5 guys start and play. Anything else is a bad pick.

    No exceptions.

  20. jaranspringer says: Sep 2, 2014 8:52 PM

I guess Reggie Mckenzie was right about Saffold.

  21. bryanq29 says: Sep 2, 2014 8:58 PM

I smelled Jason smith on this guy from the way the draft experts talked about him.

  22. middy8484 says: Sep 2, 2014 9:05 PM

    Pittsburg suks

  23. indianarams says: Sep 2, 2014 9:13 PM

This guy is a monster that’s learning how to pass block because he didn’t do it in college. No sense having him in too early only to make a mistake and we lose our 2nd QB. He’ll be in there soon enough.

  24. burtmurphy1 says: Sep 2, 2014 9:26 PM

    Meanwhile, Jake Matthews is starting…

    Snead did us a solid.

  25. h1ndrix says: Sep 2, 2014 9:44 PM

All of those picks and nothing but a .500 team to show for it.

  26. montrealraider says: Sep 2, 2014 9:59 PM

Gabe Jackson, 3rd round pick of the Raiders, is starting at LG 😉

Yeah its concerning but lets not label him a bust just yet.

  27. voiceofsweetness says: Sep 2, 2014 10:20 PM

Isn’t this the same guy that was pretty much unanimous as “The safest pick in the draft”.
I guess I should apply for a draft guru job lol.

  28. doe22us says: Sep 2, 2014 10:27 PM

So in other words he is dumb and cant pick up protection schemes. I guess the Rams should lay off picking offensive linemen with the 2nd overall pick.

  29. blueballzny says: Sep 2, 2014 10:28 PM

Another example of a guy who is built up by what he did after the college football season ended. In December everyone knew that Jake Matthews was the best OL in the draft. But Robinson put up numbers at the Combine and all of a sudden people started talking about his potential. All of a sudden he’s rocketing up draft boards, even though it was clear from watching film that Matthews was better than Robinson. Eric Fischer 2.0

  30. fumblenuts says: Sep 2, 2014 10:36 PM

This joker will turn out to be ANOTHER colossal bust for Fisher and Les…… it.

  31. scmems07 says: Sep 2, 2014 10:41 PM

Robinson is on the bench, lewan is on the bench, Matthews looks ok but has a holding problem, kuanjo is 3rd string, Moses is bench, j.James is starting and has not given up a sack all pre season while playing into the 3rd qtr in 3 of the 4 games. wasn’t that much of the reach to get the best o lineman in the draft at 19 now was it.

  32. cowboysallday says: Sep 3, 2014 2:20 AM

    Martin > Robinson

  33. kingklausman says: Sep 3, 2014 5:29 AM

BS he should be doing extra studying and more work to catch up and progress. Unfortunately the college programs run easy blocking schemes compared to the NFL.

  34. seannroth says: Sep 3, 2014 1:46 PM

    He will be fine

  35. seannroth says: Sep 3, 2014 10:31 PM
