The Packers knew that they were going to be without center J.C. Tretter for a while because of a knee injury suffered late in the preseason.

Now we know it will be at least eight weeks before Tretter will take part in a game. Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports that the team has placed Tretter on injured reserve with the designation to return later in the season. While it will be eight weeks before Tretter can play, he will be permitted to resume practicing with the team after six weeks.

If Tretter returns at the earliest possible date, he’d be eligible to play against the Bears when the Packers return from their bye on November 9.

Fifth-round pick Corey Linsley will take over at center with Tretter out of the picture. The lack of experience would be a bigger issue if Tretter, a 2013 fourth-round pick, didn’t miss his entire rookie season with an ankle injury. Should Linsley show he can handle the job, it might be tough for Tretter to get it back once he’s healthy.

Center Garth Gerhart, who is the brother of Jaguars running back Toby Gerhart, has been promoted from the practice squad.
