Robert Meachem returns to Saints

The Saints and Robert Meachem just can’t quit each other.

Meachem left for San Diego as a free agent for the 2012 season, but things didn’t work out with the Chargers and Meachem was back in New Orleans in time to play 15 games for the Saints last season. Meachem was cut as the team made its way to 53 players last week, a departure that has turned out to be even shorter lived than his previous one.

Meachem is back with the Saints and took part in practice on Wednesday. He took the roster spot of linebacker Khairi Fortt, who has been placed on injured reserve with the designation to return. Fortt will be allowed to resume practicing in six weeks and play in a game after eight weeks out of the lineup.

The Saints probably don’t┬áhave an integral role in mind for Meachem or they wouldn’t have cut him in the first place, but he’s a known commodity to Drew Brees who averaged over 20 yards a catch last season so he could see some snaps against the Falcons.

This cat has 9 lives. While in SD he couldn’t catch a cold.

Insurance for Joe Morgan. Also the best blocking WR on the team.

Meach has been a decent receiver during his career. I don’t think he has lived up to his first round draft pick status since joining the league though. Career stats of 171 receptions, 2,800 yards, and 27 TD’s in 92 games are hardly a stellar career but he has a role on the team and he plays it very well. The year in San Diego was a wash and he should have stayed with the Saints. Drew definitely can get the ball to you better than Rivers all day, everyday.

He can still stretch defenses, that’s all Drew needs..

Saints likely brought Meachem back as insurance in case Kenny Still still isn’t ready to come back from his injured quad that he has been fighting all through training camp.

One route Meach… he fills a role for this team, since they have guys like Colston and Cooks that can run multiple routes on the outside, with Graham dominating the inside.

The picture is Meachem, not Colston, who wears #12.
