Michael Bennett: Packers didn’t want to tackle Marshawn Lynch

Marshawn Lynch AP

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said early this week that running back Marshawn Lynch was ready to “let it rip” after a preseason that saw him get just three carries after ending his early holdout from training camp.

Carroll’s assessment was right on the money. Lynch ran 20 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns in Thursday night’s 36-16 win over the Packers and looked to be the same old Beast Mode that Seattle has come to love over the last few years. Most of Lynch’s work was done by hammering his way between the tackles, something that left Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett with the impression that the Packers didn’t want anything to do with getting in front of the train.

“Obviously we were the more physical team today, offensively and defensively. I saw supposedly some of the best players in the league not want to tackle Marshawn Lynch,” Bennett said, via the Associated Press. “Of course nobody is going to say nothing about that, but I seen a lot of guys whiff on tackles that should have been two-yard gains and they’re supposed to be the best.”

Whatever the reason for their inability to stop Lynch, the Packers have plenty of company in that department. Lynch has now run for at least 100 yards 20 times since the start of the 2011 season. That’s the most in the league over that span and there aren’t any signs he’s planning to stop now.

This team’s arrogance is becoming fun. Well, fun in the respect that eventually someone is going to knock them on their ass and end it all.

OH NO!!! We are so scared of this guy…..

Yeah right. Skins will pummel him

  3. youngs79 says: Sep 5, 2014 9:07 AM

Packers are soft. They don’t like to tackle Adrian Peterson either. Adrian has had some of his best games against the hapless, tasteless Packers

  4. ariani1985 says: Sep 5, 2014 9:07 AM

The Green bay defense…..the joke that keeps on giving!!!!! In all honesty, you could clearly see on TV they wanted nothing to do with him. All trolling aside it was like Seattle was playing against a good college team last night. Packers have a good change to make the playoffs but as usual they will be “one and done”!!!

  5. thebirdofprey2 says: Sep 5, 2014 9:09 AM

I am not sure if anyone listened to Bennett before but he is a funny/strange/cool dude all at once.

Seattle’s offensive line was abusing Green Bay’s front 7 but the Lynch 2nd TD I saw maybe one guy reach out and grab Lynch jersey and that was all the effort to take him down. At that point it was a team clearly feeling defeated.

  6. lmfaooooo says: Sep 5, 2014 9:11 AM

Lynch is a very unique runner. Has the cutting of McCoy with the power of Peterson.

  7. bucrightoff says: Sep 5, 2014 9:11 AM

Nice of the Bucs to let him walk so they could badly overpay Michael Johnson. Whoops.

  8. drunkinsconnie says: Sep 5, 2014 9:11 AM

Ted Thompson was lucky to draft two franchise quarterbacks. The rest? Not so much. This team is no contender.

  9. lateefthetruthspeaker says: Sep 5, 2014 9:13 AM

Another year, another 1 and done in the playoffs? gotta make it there first. Lacy concussed? he’s not the answer. Starks ran harder and with more heart.

A-Rodge gets another year older…. tick tock tick tock.

  10. floratiotime says: Sep 5, 2014 9:15 AM

Oh yeah … rub it in. Classy. But as I recall he was rather quiet in Tampa.

Hey Seahawks, that was a great performance. You are a great team, but when you are classless sportsmen about it, people will start to hate you. Eventually, all great runs come to an end. People are going to revel in your downfall.

Its a simple enough fix. Just say, “they are a great team. We just executed. Hope to see them in the playoffs.” The rest of that garbage is uncalled for.

  18. aa1829 says: Sep 5, 2014 9:26 AM

Lets face it, we did look awful. But I will say this once again, and get abused for it, but MM can’t call an offensive play to save his life. Lacy up the middle over and over, with little to show for it. Once MM decides he will run up the middle, nothing will change his mind. And to support my opinion, how many times get Lacy get the ball, then come to a dead stop behind a wall of bodies in the middle, yet next chance, he’d get the ball right back up the middle. We played like girls, but MM sealed the deal.

  20. clayshair says: Sep 5, 2014 9:30 AM

Remember when the Pack could have had Lynch for like a 3rd or 4th round pick, but TT said too expensive – not to mention they could have had Moss for a 3rd round pick, ahhhh

  21. kgun80 says: Sep 5, 2014 9:35 AM

Gotta say Bennett may be right. There were points late in the game where the Packers D looked defeated, and soft. I love Seattle, they play tough physical football. It may be a “passing league” but they crush people with an old school ground game. The offense is definitely better with a healthy Percy Harvin, the guy is just fun to watch.

  22. afcnorthlitfer says: Sep 5, 2014 9:37 AM

  30. SportsFAN44 says: Sep 5, 2014 10:01 AM

This team is a very good! In my opinion they are doing way too much talking to the media. No one wants to hear about their “choir boy” approach. Come out, execute, WIN, cash your check and repeat! That’s IT! No need to generate dislike amongst fans…

  31. bdinphoenix says: Sep 5, 2014 10:02 AM

  34. In Teddy We Trust says: Sep 5, 2014 10:07 AM

The team is soft because its leaders are soft. Rodgers threw the ball out of bounds instead of taking two more steps to get a first down because he was afraid of getting hit. And have you ever seen their coach? If you poke him in the belly you might lose your arm in there.

Keep telling yourself that love to be underdogs but after this but whipping i see u going 8-8 at best lol i mean come on your team suck but last night not even close Rodgers looked like a rookie missed more open receivers then tried to through in to double coverage.
Clueless fans for the packers make other hate your team for the good fans that know what they are talking about….. your now 0-1 lol good luck with that

  36. qdog112 says: Sep 5, 2014 10:18 AM

For real football fans, the Seahawks represent the elite in the game. Hating them for being good is stupid.

Bennett is right. The headliners on the Pack defense are who he was talking to. You know the guys with the golden locks and biceps. Truth hurts.

If you want them to shut up … beat’em. That always works.

  37. herkulease says: Sep 5, 2014 10:18 AM

So Bennett is suggesting that Marshawn wasn’t that good? He didn’t break any tackles or drag any players to gain a first down? He didn’t do a few great cut backs that people didn’t expect from him?

Did some packers whiff? Sure. But you’d think a guy would give his own teammate some credit.

  38. slick50ks says: Sep 5, 2014 10:19 AM

Seattle won’t be going against a defense this bad every week. And while the Seahawk defense seemed dominate, Rodgers played like a coward last night. He’s a good QB, but his level of elite play is way overblown. The weakness of the NFC North has skewed Green Bays standing as a great team. They’re anything but. Adding an old guy like Peppers doesn’t fix a defense any better than the faiders adding all the old dead guys they did.

  39. qdog112 says: Sep 5, 2014 10:23 AM

Remember people saying Lynch would suffer from his holdout?

Well, I said Marshawn doesn’t do training camp. He’ll show up late, stand on the sidelines in preseason and then …

  40. rgod8855 says: Sep 5, 2014 10:26 AM

As a Seahawks fan, obviously I liked the result. But the Packers are a solid team that ran into another good team on an emotional night in a venue that has a 17-1 record for the past two years. Packers have a few obstacles right now, but Lacey is tough (Starks not a slouch either), and the defense is definitely up a notch from last year. The Packers are probably going to be a playoff team, barring more injuries. These guys are not to be taken lightly.

  41. ragnarthemagnificent says: Sep 5, 2014 10:26 AM

Packers looked soft and supple last night. Seahawks embarrassed them. A-Rodge throwing the ball away instead of running two yards for a first down was classic soft serve.

    No doubt about it.

  46. ck44sps says: Sep 5, 2014 10:43 AM

Can Somebody tell why Green Bay Defense sucks so bad. For Christ Sakes you have 21, 50,52,53,56, 90, 95, all first round picks. You have 37 making 10 mill a year, 38 making 7 million a year. Its either the scheme or those guys are playing for the money with no heart. For the love of god they their backsides kicked. Seattle reminds me of the Packers from 2010. They play for the love of the game. Green Bay players play individual football. Those guys got selfish with endorsements, and forgot what their jobs were. I’m tired of the same broken record.Fix it or get rid of some players.

  47. mkelly534 says: Sep 5, 2014 10:45 AM

Packers seem to be wasting the talents of Aaron Rogers. Get him some o linemen that can stay on the field and some rugged defensive players before he gets to old to do his thing. The NFC West has destroyed the Packers over the last 2 years and have repeatedly gutted them on the ground. Maybe it’s time for a gut check.

Nobody hates the Seahawks because they are good. They hate them because they have no humility. “You want them to shut up? Beat them.” Ok, I expect that kind of statement from teenagers. My thing is, they are good, so why the need to talk so much? I guess I’m in the minority that I love seeing greatness on the field (even when my team gets beat), but I also think teams should be gracious in victory.

  56. noggintopper says: Sep 5, 2014 11:57 AM

  57. adderal says: Sep 5, 2014 11:58 AM

How does one team gather all the classless players in the league. Common theme is the real lack of respect for their peers.
It’s gotta be the coach who although is now a champion is still a failure as a husband, father and about the fakest coach in college or the pro’s.
Hard not to admire what they have accomplished in the last year and a half but I’m glad I don’t have to root for such unsavory characters. Wonder if Petey still keeps that 18 year old college student in Malibu? She’s gotta be 25 by now so maybe not.

  58. allday38 says: Sep 5, 2014 12:07 PM

I love all these comments about Seattle being arrogant or classless. In case this is your first rodeo, all teams have players who speak their minds. You just hear more about it from the relevant teams. So, come down off your high horses and enjoy the season.
    Go Hawks!

  59. 5to46hawkfan says: Sep 5, 2014 12:10 PM

  60. 2difshoe says: Sep 5, 2014 12:15 PM

Lynch has one trait similar to the GREAT Walter Payton…when you make an attempt to tackle him, you are seriously punished for your effort, and find yourself looking for the sideline and hopeful you can distinguish the color of your teammates jerseys.

  61. pkrlvr says: Sep 5, 2014 1:07 PM

Could of predicted this. Packers lose to the best team in the league on week one and all the trolls come out. FYI we lost to SF week one last year and still made it in with worse injuries to boot. Keep piling on trolls, in a month we will be 3-1 and mn will be lucky to have a win. Enjoy it while you can.

  62. Mr. Wright 212 says: Sep 5, 2014 1:17 PM

Could have predicted it, sure. But too many of you were saying the Packers were actually going to be close or even win. So while you could have, you didn’t, and are now backtracking, which I could have and DID predict would happen.

No one’s trolling. What Packers fans were doing on that thread on here yesterday leading up to the game was trolling. You’re just getting called on it now.

  65. Frazier28/7 says: Sep 5, 2014 1:28 PM

That was fun to watch, the JV Packers are who we thought they were!

AP could have another 200 yd game on Oct 2nd.

  66. stellarperformance says: Sep 5, 2014 1:36 PM

I have nothing but respect for the Seahawks and their fans. Their team is the best around and the fans are fair.

The Packers have never been as big a disappointment to me than they were last night. Poor play-calling and the overall game-plan was useless.

I think they can recover and still do very well, but they are not anywhere near the level of Seattle. And I do not feel good about the next four games. They could lose them all if they play like they did last night.

  67. marttizzle says: Sep 5, 2014 1:59 PM

What happened to the Packers? I am a Vikings fan and I always respected the Packers because they are good. I couldn’t believe the Vikings got pummeled out their like a rag doll? Eddie Lacy was getting hit by more than one person at a time, Aaron Rodgers was getting hurried or sacked and the defense took a step back. Yes, it was the SB Champs, however people had Greenbay winning a SB this season, but with crappie play like last night this team might not claim the division this year.

  68. TheDPR says: Sep 5, 2014 2:00 PM

There is not a single player on the Packers defense that is the best in the league. If Lynch had not run for over 100 yards and the team not scored 30+ it would have been a failure.

The Seahawks played harder and smarter though, I will give Bennett that.

  69. idontknowanythingaboutthat says: Sep 5, 2014 2:34 PM

The thing I have learned about Packer fans is that when things are good, they talk about as much **** as most teams. But when they lose and get manhandled, they have to come out with zingers about the Vikings and totally bypass what happened in the game because they can’t think of anything logical to say. You wonder why teams can’t stand you. People say that the Seahawks are not classy because they talk smack but last I checked, they are the defending Super Bowl champions with a pretty good offense and damn good defense. Until someone puts the smackdown on them, I think they earned the right talk smack. Besides, what Bennett said was the actual truth. But hey, what do I know? FYI, not a Seahawks fan but man are they fun to watch.

Could have predicted the mn trolls coming out in force, not the final outcome of the game. That was a bit of a surprise as I thought it’d be a much closer game, but you can’t have 3 turnovers (counting the 4th and 5 play) against the hawks. Plus the two stupid fouls that gave them new downs. That’s basically 5 turnovers. Can’t win like that.

Yet we still had a chance with lots of time left in the 4th until that stupid hold by Jones that crushed any hope. Far too much attention is paid to sports stars jacking their mouths. But when you win you earn the right to talk.

Watch Earl Thomas, Russell Wilson, Cam Chancellor, Marshawn. Plenty of Seahawks have their feet on the ground and talk with their game play.

One of the seldom talked about aspects of the Seahawks running game is that it’s extremely versatile, especially with Percy Harvin in the lineup. Between Harvin, Lynch, and Wilson the Seahawks make the defense have to defend the entire width of the field. It’s not just a power running game that relies on Lynch to earn yards between the tackles. Many of those yards on Thursday night were the result of huge lanes created by defenders who were worried about dealing with runs to the perimeter.

For all this talk about classless, big mouthed Seahawks, at least admit that you’d love to have them on your team. Just like you rooted for Muhammed Ali and laughed while watching John McEnroe berate tennis referees. While not my style, they add color to the sport and provide nice yin to Russell Wilson’s yang. Go Hawks!

I’ll tell you a game the Seahawks and fans would be salivating at the mouth for; that scumbag Doug Balwin, steeling Russell Wilson’s girl and are now planning in getting married.
I can only speculate that it was Tate had his pay day and Russ, being the classy team guy he is, is waiting till next year, so the team can field another championshup team.
They deserve each other. Russell will have a loving wife and beautiful family.
let’s just say that Golden Tate is now the enemy and he will hear it from the 12s and feel it immensly from a team that doesn’t like classless dogs going after another brother’s woman. LOL, Linebackers of Doom, will be putting a serious hurt on Mr. TATE. These overwhelming emotions ofa serious betrayal. Tate is not liked in Seattle!!!

Dione Sanders (Atlanta,) Michael Irvin (Dallas,) and so many others in the HOF. Lyle Alzado (Los Angeles Raiders,) Kenny Easley (Seattle,) and Cliff Branch (Raiders,) with that shoe polish on to block the Sun, Marcus Allen…all of these players talked trash then, so what’s with the double standardon the Hawks?
Hawk fans don’t be drawn in by these trolls. I know we are classy fans, you know we are classt fans, so pay then no attention. They’re just weak ;-)

    lol@pass the dynasty torch.

Convenient to overlook that we won two Super Bowls in four years OVER your Patriots since your “dynasty”. If anyone’s passing a torch, it’s your owners, the Giants.

‘Hawks are obviously the team to beat this season. What I want to see is how they handle some adversity. They have been very fortunate regarding injuries. Let’s see how they handle it when 3-5 key starters go down for extended periods of time.

Would losing both tackles for 8 games, your ProBowl center for 3 of those same 8, and your #1&2 receivers coming into the season qualify? Because that’s what happened to the Seahawks offense last year, and the end result seemed to turn out ok.

You know how long most real Seahawks fans have been waiting to be hated? That’s how you know you’re doing something right in this league. Nobody bothers to hate you until you’re on top.
