Robert Mathis tears Achilles tendon

The Colts’ defense looked a little lost last night, missing the pass rush provided by Robert Mathis.

They’ll need to find a way to fix it.

Multiple league sources tell PFT that Mathis suffered a torn Achilles last week while working out on his own in Atlanta.  His season is now over.

Mathis had three games remaining on his suspension for violating the PED policy, which he claimed arose from taking a fertility drug.

But now, they won’t be getting him back for the final three-fourths of the season.

The 33-year-old Mathis had 19.5 sacks in 2013, his first without Dwight Freeney.  The Colts had given him a four-year, $36 million deal prior to the 2012 season, and he’s due to make $5 million this year and $7 million in 2015.

Because the injury happened away from the team facility, the Colts could place Mathis on the non-football injury list and withhold this year’s money, setting the stage to part ways with an aging and banged-up player this offseason.

    His season is now “owner”.

    Interesting turn of events there.

Tear an ACL and your season is now owner.

    Somebody had to replace Irsay.

So they’re gonna withhold his money because he was doing the right thing by the team keeping in shape? That seems like an Irsay thing to do and a slimeball Goodell thing to uphold such a low rent move.

Wow what a big loss for the Colts they have so a great team. I don’t know where they will get pass rush from now. But that means that Luck and the offense will have to score a lot of points to win because without any pass rush you aren’t stopping the opposing teams offense. Sucks to be a Colts fan they had such a great off-season I had them in the AFC championship. Still early in the season so they have time to figure it out.

Looks Ray Rice’s season is owner as well

With his season now being owner, does that come with an increase in pay, or nah?

At his age… I hope he recovers to live a comfortable life, would be “sprinkles on top” if he came back just as good for the Colts.

Wow… I think the AFC South is still the Colts to lose but they need Luck to play at an elite level all year.

An achillies tendon is not an ACL, people.

  20. coltstrong says: Sep 8, 2014 2:56 PM

His salary at 7 million for 2015 seems reasonable until you figure he is going to be 34 coming off an Achilles injury and Andrew Luck is going to have to get paid.

He may very have just played his last game for the Colts, which is sad. Love this guy’s competitiveness.

Sorry Robert, but Oakland will be in touch!

  26. broncosnative says: Sep 8, 2014 3:03 PM

Damn, you lose one of your best players on offense last year, now you lose your best player on defense. It’s gonna come down to luck ( I’m talking about the QB) to guide this team far again. That’s ok, he’ll get the job done

  27. cshearing says: Sep 8, 2014 3:03 PM

Wow, that’s some bad luck. Is some little devilish gremlin going around slicing achilles? Is that like 4 just this weekend in the NFL?

  28. danind says: Sep 8, 2014 3:05 PM

these guys get off the steroids and HGH and their bodies start breaking down. happens every time.

and yes, he was on steroids, I don’t care what “story” he made up about the suspension. Look at his ridiculous season last year after many years of decline.

  29. nflinsider711 says: Sep 8, 2014 3:06 PM

Will his suspension carry over to next season or does he get to watch his suspension go by injured?

Time for Grigson to trade our 1st rounder to replace Mathis…

  31. texansdan says: Sep 8, 2014 3:14 PM

Once again, steroids will strengthen the muscles, but NOT the tendons.

  32. jolink653 says: Sep 8, 2014 3:15 PM

Hate to see a great competitor like Mathis go down with this kind of injury. I know he’s terrorized the Patriots over the years, but the game is a lot more fun with him in it.

Get well soon and hope to see him 100% healthy next season

I think he’s already getting ready to trade a 1st to replace the guy he got with his last trade of a 1st – Trent Richardson.

That guy is a total dud. Maybe a 1st for Dwight Freeney?

  37. all4patriots says: Sep 8, 2014 3:40 PM

Irsay deserves 0-16 seasons every year until he sells the team. This won’t quite get them there, unfortunately.

  40. bengcolt says: Sep 8, 2014 3:54 PM

The Clots season is not reliant on one single player. Yes he is a good pass rusher, a very important key player, but they can make due. They made changes to their defense once Freeney left and they managed. They have a couple pro bowlers in their secondary as is….. its manageable .

  41. thegenoatkinsdiet says: Sep 8, 2014 3:55 PM

Injuries suck. Sorry to hear that. Mathis has been a fantastic player for a long time. Leon Hall has come back from two Achillies injuries over the past three years. Mathis can too.

  45. TheWizard says: Sep 8, 2014 4:55 PM

I’d like to hear a description of how that happened.

  46. briang123 says: Sep 8, 2014 5:02 PM

The perfect replacement is sitting right there on the Cowboys practice squad, Michael Sam. Sam would give the Colts pass rush a needed lift now that this has happened. If they don’t sign him, we will all know how the Colts really are.

  47. cobrala2 says: Sep 8, 2014 5:37 PM

That’s a damn shame for him and the Colts. The worst part of football.

  48. raiders4ever says: Sep 8, 2014 8:03 PM

It’s in most players contracts that they don’t have to pay if it’s a non football injury. Don’t feel sorry for them they signed on the dotted line so they know what can happened.

  51. eviltwin007 says: Sep 8, 2014 9:31 PM

@all4patriots…. Why do you feel Irsay deserves to go 0-16 every season? It’s not like Patriots are a clean organization. They should have to give up those 3 Super Bowls that they cheated to win.

  52. eviltwin007 says: Sep 8, 2014 9:33 PM

@raiders4ever….Do some fact checking before you post something. The Colts won Super Bowl 41 with Mathis. What have the Raiders done in the past decade?

  53. eviltwin007 says: Sep 8, 2014 9:35 PM

@briang123….The Colts don’t need Sam. We need a real player. If Sam was so good, he’d be on an active squad right now.

  54. ddogdaddy says: Sep 8, 2014 11:22 PM

That a boy, give em hell. I was going to say that you made that Raiders fan look stupid but he actually did the work for you.
