The Seattle Seahawks signed former Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Thomas to serve as a replacement of injured nickel cornerback Jeremy Lane.

Lane was placed on the injured reserve - designated to return list by the Seahawks on Monday after re-injuring his groin during their game against the Green Bay Packers. He will be eligible to practice after six weeks and return to game action after eight weeks. He will be eligible for Seattle’s Week 10 game against the New York Giants.

Thomas has been let go by Carolina during final cuts in August. Thomas was a fifth-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2011. He appeared in 38 games with 10 starts for the Carolina Panthers over the last three seasons. He started six games last season, including against Seattle in Week 1.

With cornerback Tharold Simon having knee surgery last week that will keep him sidelined approximately a month, Seattle needed some additional depth at the position. Thomas has primarily been an outside cornerback in the past. The Seahawks will likely ask him to play in the slot instead.

Thomas finished last season with 28 tackles and one interception.

Seattle also released guard David Arkin and defensive back Josh Aubrey from their practice squad and re-signed guard Nate Isles and safety Terrance Parks to the squad.
