“Goodell Must Go” banners will fly over four stadiums in Week Two

Getty Images

The stunning Adrian Peterson child-abuse case trumped what had been the biggest story of the week.  But what had been the biggest story of the week could still be the biggest story of the weekend.

According to Bloomberg.com, a women’s advocacy group had arranged for a banner to be flown over four NFL stadiums in Week Two urging the ouster of Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Planes pulling the message “@Ultraviolet:  #GoodellMustGo” will fly for two hours before games at MetLife Stadium (Cardinals-Giants), First Energy Field (Saints-Browns), Levi’s Stadium (Bears-49ers), and Lucas Oil Stadium (Eagles-Colts).  No-fly restrictions apply at all stadiums one hour before kickoff.

Both Ultraviolet and the National Organization for Women have called for Goodell to resign after the release of the Ray Rice elevator video and the NFL’s efforts to explain what it knew, when it knew it, and why it even needed to know what was on the video in order to understand what Rice knocking his then-fiancée out actually looked like.

That’s the question I’ve been asking people ALL week. …… why did you need the video to know what happened? Common sense is not so common nowadays.

  9. truthfactory says: Sep 13, 2014 8:30 AM

I love that they focus on his employer for giving him a light punishment, but the courts seem to be getting a free pass.

If they really cared about helping women, they would focus on the failure of our court systems. That would truly potentially affect millions of women.

I have news for them- there are thousands of employers out there who employ wife beaters and have NEVER suspended or fired them. I am assuming they fly banners over those employers businesses too?? Of course not!

If anyone is truly angry, be angry at our courts. Ray Rice (or anyone for that matter) wouldn’t be able to play any games from behind bars.

  11. RegisHawk says: Sep 13, 2014 8:31 AM

I don’t think it was a question of having seen the video. I suspect the real issue was taking the lead from the authorities, who did basically nothing. That was a mistake.

As for whether they had the video or saw the video, it’s really not important, except to people who are looking to jump on any opportunity to bring Goodell down. Don’t care either way. If/when they replace him, I’ll be here to post “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss”…and a couple years after that, when everyone’s clamoring for *his* head…

If you think this is something, wait until the breast cancer pink campaign starts, and the women’s groups will be asking about the hypocrisy of the NFL commissioner and owners.

Shield will take a big hit then. Think they’ll cancel?

  14. puffnstuff5005 says: Sep 13, 2014 8:42 AM

There are many many reasons why Goodell needs to go. This is just one of them.

  17. bigwaveseeker says: Sep 13, 2014 8:46 AM

Enough of this already. Goodell didn’t abuse his wife. Didn’t beat his kid. Didn’t get a DUI after already being on probation. Stop trying to create a scapegoat for these scenarios. Do you really think the next commissioner, hired by the owners, is going to be any less lenient? And based on what we’ve seen over the past several weeks – should he be?

  18. kyblue33 says: Sep 13, 2014 8:46 AM

Wonder where the banner was about RAY RICE? He knocked out his beloved! Most women I know, kind of blame HIM! not Goodell. the NOW organization of women looks silly and they are!

  19. rhett16 says: Sep 13, 2014 8:51 AM

Calling for this guy to lose his job is crazy. The police knew what happened, they didn’t punish Rice. The Ravens knew what happened, and they basically held a press conference to praise the guy. Goodell is the only one who actually punished Rice, and he did it twice, and people want him fired. Sheesh.

  20. raiderufan says: Sep 13, 2014 8:53 AM

This extremely short sighted….how about all the other players that have abused women and these groups were no where to be found? Now that we have a video they are gonna get all up in arms?

I’ve been saying and still say that Goodell needs to resign…but not for the reasons these groups are giving. The black eye this mismanagment has left on the league, the cavalier attitude toward rules and regulations he put in place, the lying, the poor initial punishment and his history of severe judgements with statements regarding those judgements that fly back in his face are the reasons I think his credibility is shot.

The credibility of these groups is shot the second the media firestorm and a chance to been seen are the reasons they’re going on the offensive. The NFL has had this attitude towards domestic violence much longer than just this case…where was the outrage then? Seems like it’s more for publicity than help and that’s sad.

  24. harleyrg says: Sep 13, 2014 8:55 AM

how the hell does Gordon get 10 game suspension when under the new limits he was completely clean ? man goodell has a hard on for the browns. demarice smith has got to be the worst negotiator in the history on negotiators. with the league and goodell reeling from the rice fiasco all they got for a new number for pot is 35 nanograms ? that is still 15 under what the u.s. government uses and 115 under what the Olympic committee uses?

They should have been this mad before the video. I believe its too late to change your rage. His money grubbing wife wants him back in the league. She threatened him with prison or marriage and now she is not receiving her checks. Leave them alone so she can buy stuff……

  30. ruggerlad says: Sep 13, 2014 9:02 AM

I wish those banners had flown the second he was hired then the game would not be the mess that it is now with rules that cannot be consistently called and don’t make sense such as the defenseless WR or helmet to helmet rules.
A 6’200lbs DB has to let a 6’6 255lbs TE catch the ball and protect themselves or whatever before hitting them??
The helmet being where it is can be impossible to avoid at times.

  31. pats3rings says: Sep 13, 2014 9:03 AM

If Goodell must go the owners will waist no time throwing him under the bus. But fans need to come to the realization that it won’t matter because ultimately Roger is just a patsy for the owners and he does their dirty work and shields them from the public, and he does a really good job apparently.

The next commish will do the same thing.

If you don’t like football, or how football players act, Then don’t watch the game, and don’t pay money to the game. irs that simple. The NFL dug their own grave too because they are too stupid to realize that trying to get everyone in the country to watch football, these are the consequences.

For everyone preaching hate on Adrian, Ray, and Goodell. Go find an actual role model like a fireman, or soldier, etc. I wish everyone that doesn’t actually care about the SPORT of football would stop being apart of the game, and let people that love watching football to escape from real life for a day every week actually get back to doing so.

  38. pats3rings says: Sep 13, 2014 9:35 AM

    @sb44champs

I could not care less if Roger stays or goes and obviously Kraft and all of the owners support him they hand picked him and hired him to do a job, a job that he has done well in their eyes.

My point is all of the changes in the league over the past 5 years have nothing to do with Roger. The rule changes, the emphasis on offense, and even the Ray Rice situation is all on the owners. Anyone who thinks that Roger doesn’t check with the owners before he makes any decision is just living in a fantasy world. But then again that’s exactly what the owners want you to think. What makes me laugh is how gullible some NFL fans are, it’s so obvious that Roger is just a front for the owners but people really think change will come with a new commissioner.

The owners paid Roger 40+ million last year despite the majority of NFL fans thinking he was a idiot who is ruining football. If that doesn’t tell you everything you need to know then your hopeless.

  39. harleyrg says: Sep 13, 2014 9:38 AM

  40. mazenblue says: Sep 13, 2014 9:39 AM

One woman is beaten by her husband or partner every 15 seconds in the United States. (Uniform Crime Reports, Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1991)

Number of reports of child abuse every year in the United States: 2.9 million or 7945 a day. (safehorizon.org)

I think a lot of NFL fans need to grow up, stop lionizing these athletes…they are no different or better just a richer than us.

Why aren’t they protesting the DA’s office who didn’t prosecute? Or Ray Rice’s house? I guess that won’t get as much media coverage. I’m not a Goodell fan, but why is the “media mulisha” not focused on the actual perpetrators? What will they do when Ray Rice is given his “2nd chance” in the NFL? He should be banned not the only guy who actually tried to punish the disgusting woman beating trash bag… Aka Ray Rice.

  46. sb44champs says: Sep 13, 2014 9:53 AM

Also, I’m very aware that Goodell is a front for the owners and I don’t blame Goodell for the rule changes, that’s on the owners… I completely blame him for the biased discipline he hands out depending on which team the player plays for…….FACTS

  47. wholelottacrazygoingon says: Sep 13, 2014 9:53 AM

  48. eagleswin says: Sep 13, 2014 10:09 AM

So the commissioner of the league with the toughest domestic abuse penalties in all of pro sports must go but the MLB which has no domestic abuse penalties at all don’t get banners at stadiums or public outcry?

MLB players have done everything NFL players have done and more including trying to strangle a spouse with a phone cord but do the women’s groups care about that? Not as much as trying to oust the man who just gave a domestic abuser a lifetime ban.

It’s a really screwed up world we live in where the women’s groups are out to get the only commissioner who has done anything about domestic abuse.

It’s all about publicity, not about the actual cause.

He runs his office like a Senator ( he has his chief of staff) .
He takes every chance he can to get his face in front of the camera.
Did we see Tagliabue half as much ? When you insist on being judge
and jury, you must prove that you are above reproach….something
that Senator Goodell has fallen short of. It is his own fault!

Well then it would appear your out of luck. Because if Kraft and the other influential NFL owners have as much say over the current commissioner as you think they do, and I would tend to agree, then what makes you think anything would change with a new commissioner? Especially when you consider the fact that Kraft, Rooney, Mara, etc. will be making the decision on who to hire? The most influential NFL owners will still be calling the shots regardless of who the commissioner is.

Everyone knows that Goodell chooses how and when to discipline players. The owners have nothing to do with Goodell’s decisions on discipline. They can’t, it would be a major conflict of interest. Therefore, a different commissioner will most likely choose to have a more structured discipline process, not the shoot from the hip biased way Goodell chooses to discipline. TRUTH

Then I’m going to release different parts of the tape at different times, but never release the audio. I’m going to get a job at Target, so that when the tapes are seen, everyone will demand me to be terminated. Then Target will face US scrutiny for ever hiring me in the first place. We will fly banners over every Target in America that should say “sublimalsteeler must go”. Something that comes out later is that I called all of you Redskins to your face before I spanked you (which would be a double spanking). But that was after a lot of money was paid to have the audio files released. But only part of the audio was released, so you wouldn’t know the whole story. Because if everyone knew the reason I spanked you in the first place…this may have never been a story at all.

What would Roger’s motivation have been for not looking at the tape and going easy on Rice unless his bosses were telling him to do so.

Unless of course you truly believe that Goodell is just an idiot. In which case I would suggest you stop being so naive.

If Ray Rice is suspended indefinitely why is Greg Hardy playing? This is why Goodell needs to go, there is no consistency or credibility. They all acted shocked when the elevator tape went public which comes off as reactionary and insincere to me. I was not shocked by the tape, I had been hearing the whole time he knocked her out in the elevator, the tape just confirmed what I already knew. They had 6 months to investigate and come up with proper discipline but in the end, TMZ had the final say, not Goodell. His power has been usurped and he can no longer effectively commission this league.

i’m not a fan of goodell’s policies but i don’t like the whole public mob mentality to get somebody fired. he should not be fired just because the public pressure is at an all time high.

If public pressure is at an all time high then there must be a good reason for that. Public trust in Goodell is gone for good and that is reason enough for him to go..

You’re right, he should be fired for incompetence.

People attending the games will ridicule the banners.

The real target audience will be the people who watch the evening news.

It seems to me that if any changes are to be made, these women activists must convince other women that it should be illegal for men to beat up women.

That won’t happen until female fans quit wearing Ray Rice jerseys to Ravens games.

Why isn’t the prosecutor being called out instead of Rodger Goodell?
    Leave Adrian Peterson alone!
