Chiefs tailback Joe McKnight’s season appears to be over.

McKnight, who caught two TD passes in the Chiefs’ victory at Miami on Sunday, has suffered a torn Achilles tendon, B.J. Kissel of the club’s website reported Friday.

The 26-year-old McKnight was out of the NFL in the 2013 regular season, but he made the Chiefs’ roster out of training camp, and against Miami, he played the best offensive game of his pro career, catching six passes for 64 yards and two second-half scores.

Now comes the news McKnight has suffered a most-dreaded lower-leg injury, one that could keep him off the playing field until 2015. He will be a free agent after the season, per NFLPA records.

With McKnight out for an extended stretch, the Chiefs are left with Knile Davis, Cyrus Gray and De’Anthony Thomas in reserve behind Jamaal Charles. Thomas, a rookie from Oregon, could get some of the passing game reps that McKnight could have received once he returns from a nagging hamstring injury.
