Teddy Bridgewater: Too soon to say if I’ll play Thursday

Getty Images

Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater suffered a sprained ankle in Sunday’s win over the Falcons, and it left him unsure whether he’ll be ready to go on Thursday night against the Packers.

“Each day I’m making progress,” Bridgewater said today. “I’m just going to keep moving, move forward and try to get ready for Thursday.”

Asked if he could put a percentage on his chances of playing, Bridgewater answered, “I cannot. We still have a long time until Thursday, so right now I’m going to continue to just rehab, do a little exercise today and see where I am the next couple days.”

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer sounded optimistic about Bridgewater’s chances, but he emphasized that it’s ultimately a medical decision about whether Bridgewater is healthy enough to go.

“He’s out here today in a walk-through. He’s fine, really. He’s good,” Zimmer said. “Just depends on when we feel he’s ready. He won’t if we feel he’s not ready.”

If Bridgewater can’t go, the Vikings will turn to Christian Ponder. Which means Vikings fans are hoping beyond hope that Bridgewater can go.

  1. I’d rather have Teddy, but Ponder did go 70% with a few TDs at Lambeau last year with Mutgrave calling the plays. Just sayin’z

  2. For Packer fans, its a toss up. A one legged Bustwater vs a very mobile but noodle arm Ponder?

The fear in Titletown USA is palpable, sort of along the lines of when they had to face the formidable Joe Webb, who according to the clarivoyant TV talking head-Tony Dungy, would lead the Vikings to victory.

The rest as they say, is history, as in the Vikings this Thursday night.

  3. If Ponder plays… sigh. I don’t even know if I’ll be able to stomach watching the game. I want to see these two teams at their best. Fingers crossed that Bridgewater will be good to go. Best of luck to both teams, I hope it’ll be a hard-fought battle.

  4. While I believe Bridgewater gives the Vikings their best chance to win this season, Ponder put more than enough points on the board to win games last season, however the D would break down in the second half and failed to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks and cause turnovers.

  5. He will play Thursday and then get 10 days to rest for Detroit.

Not saying we will win with Teddy. Green Bay with Rodgers is a tough win on the road, so my money is still on Green Bay.

But Teddy gives them the best chance, that’s for sure. We’re a different team with him at the helm.

  6. If the Vikings have to play Ponder, we need to get behind him. He has won a couple of big games and can pull this one out if we give him the confidence he lacks in himself. I know he is not he long term answer but if he is who we have, we have to pull for him loudly and publicly. We can’t boo him at the game, he is not confident enough to overcome that. We will hurt ourselves as much as if we threw the ball away. He did beat the Packers once before with a lot less team around him (but more AP)

Go Vikings (Teddy get well soon).

  7. packers are scared we can tell i mean they already calling out they think teddy is going to be use some sort of baned drugs to me this screams they are scared

  8. I love Teddy, but whether he plays or Ponder does, I don’t hold out much hope for a win. The refs will provide the Packers and their faithful with their normal amount of homefield advantage phantom penalties. Just enough to make the difference in the outcome.

Zimmer to his defense, “Erin is an NFL QB, just remember that he is special so if given the chance, lightly tap on his non throwing arm in an effort to tackle him, anything more will bring a flag”.

  9. Teddy being coy? Come on, man. Obviously you’re playing, you should have finished the game on Sunday. QBs don’t leave games for twisted ankles. Carted off and then carted back on?? Him an Paul Pierce – SOFT.

its not too soon however, to label him a bust, as in Teddy Bustwater.

    =========================================
I sure hope he busts on Thursday night against the Green Bay team the same way he busted against the Atlanta team on Sunday. If he does, the Minnesota team is going to win.

  11. A Packer fan saying that from what I have seen so far this year, no one, not the players, coaches, fans, media, – nobody should be taking anything for granted with this team.

The offense is a roller coaster mystery.

The defense could be historically bad – and I really believe the defensive coaches do not have a clue.

Vs Bears, GB was fortunate to make the end of 1st half stop then Jaybird reverted in the second half – was that close to being down to the final drive.

  12. “Harrison around the edge Rodgers scrambles to the outside and heeeeeeeeeeees saaaaacked! By number 22 – Harry the Hit Man. It appears as if Rodgers is still down on the turf, oh my…medical staff comes out to the field now” – Future call from P-A.

“The silence you hear is Lambeau field”

  13. The Vikes may not win the division or make the playoffs this year, but I like where MN is going and they have a 21 year old QB of the future to build around! The defense is already up from 32nd in the league in scoring defense to 12th and that is with 7 new defensive starters, many of them either rookies or 2nd year players. The OL is all signed for the next 4 years with the exception of Johnson, but they drafted his replacement already. If they can get one more solid corner for depth, an upgrade at safety beside Harrison Smith, a stud WR and an upgrade over Asiata, the Vikes will be set for a long term run at the “big game”.

  14. It sounded like Teddy was going to be highly questionable due to what the Vikings did with their roster yesterday. That was said on the “Vikings sign former Mr. Irrelevant to practice squad” story. Was right of course, but that didn’t stop those overly intelligent Vikings trolls from down-voting the accurate comment over 2:1.

  15. Hopefully the refs keep the flags stashed and its fairly officiated. Vikes DLine is going to have to bring it all game. LINVAL HUNGRY!

  16. Sounds like there’s a bit of gamesmanship going on. Either this sprained ankle is a lot worse than they’re letting on or they don’t want to announce their starting quarterback to the Packers before they have to.

Mark my words: “Tough as Nails” Teddy may be limited but he will play.

  17. Really? This guy has a decent game against the 31st ranked Falcons defense and he is a future hall of famer. Vikings fans are something else, lol.

  18. I think Teddy would play no matter what. I think the Vikings want him to play, but not if it’s going to do more harm than good. Last thing I want to see id a sprain turn into a bigger sprain and then the Vikings got a beat up QB that could try to make too much happen and end up like Robert Griffin III… Sure his injury was way worse, but forcing himself to play injured hurt his long term career…

Google “Teddy Bridgewater wills Cards to title” and then tell me he isn’t going to play on a sprained ankle.
    ==================================
Just because he risked it as a college player doesn’t mean that he will as a pro. Now there is money involved. It also depends upon whether or not the training staff will clear him to play. It’s not necessarily the players choice.

I don’t think you understand injuries. There are different degrees of sprains, just as there are different degrees of breaks.

Take Aaron Rodgers, for instance. When he broke his clavicle, the healing and return time is typically tied to the severity and location of the break, as well as age. For most adults, they can’t return to sports or regular activity until about 12 weeks, depending upon the severity of the break. I believe Rodgers returned well before that, about 9 weeks. For kids, those breaks can heal in two weeks, and for teens, about 6 weeks, although being healed doesn’t mean you can return to activity immediately.

And when you speak about toughness, Rodgers led the league in being sacked twice and was in the Top 10 several other times, and yet didn’t miss a game in those years.

Bridgewater hasn’t been sacked yet and couldn’t get through his first game. He’s one of the lighter QB’s in the league and has a smaller frame. It doesn’t matter how good he is if he can’t stay healthy, and he hasn’t even been able to get through 60 minutes yet and he’s barely been hit.

  20. LETS SEE IF ALL OF THESE BIG MOUTH SMACK TALKING VIKING FANS ARE RUNNING THEIR MOUTH FRIDAY MORNING,

Lets jump ahead with the excuses , we ll start them early…….

TYPICAL REFS GREEN BAY GOT ALL THE CALLS

    WE GOT ROBBED

WE SHOULD OF WON FOR NOT THE………….fill in the blanks

Wait until we get at our place….oh wait..

Matthews is on Roids he is FACT…..
    Rogers is so lucky
Teddy will never lose another game to the 13 time World Champs
Our Dynasty starts next week and we are gonna crush you by 30 next time

    Sounds like a good start

  21. Bridgewater will play and the Vikings will win- they match up well against the Packers now.

Packers have an awful run defense, and overall are #26 in the league. I can see this game being a lot like the Atlanta game last weekend.

Rodgers is good against cover-2, and not much pass rush, which is what the Bears gave them. But against Zimmer’s scheme, Rodgers isn’t as good. Packer receivers aren’t as good as they once were, and the Packers aren’t gonna win games handing off to Lacy.

  22. The main worry for the Packers is not who’s at QB for Mini, it’s how can we stop any rushing attack. I mean, the GB D-Line is just awful, and I’m saying that as a Packer fan. Vikings may not have to throw until the Packers have brought both safeties up, and in that case even Ponder can do enough to win.
I hope Rodgers is good enough to give Masthay another game off, because the Pack may need to score on every possession.

  23. I hope he can’t go. Maybe after another blowout the NFL will rethink their Thursday night lineup. Like giving teams a second bye week and using that extra bye week to prepare for their Thursday night game.

  24. If I were a GB troll, I would be careful bringing up offensive/defensive stats. Keep in mind these stats are with only one game with Bridgewater and Peterson. If the stats say anything, they point to doom for GB on Thursday.

Now watch the thumbs down and the GB trolls say stats are meaningless after they have been throwing stats around all day!!

    Total Offense:
    21 Minnesota Vikings
    28 Green Bay Packers

    Total Defense:

    15 Green Bay Packers

  25. Frank, we were told Rodgers would be back in six weeks at the most and he took eight weeks off because he “felt some discomfort when handing off.” His unwillingness to play almost cost the Packers the division, but luckily for him the Lions and Bears collapsed.

If you listen to what everyone involved is saying, this sounds like a mild ankle sprain. If it’s so severe that he can’t be effective, he won’t be playing. I’m happy to give up a victory over the Packers to keep him healthy the rest of the year.

  26. Not sure if Teddy will be ready for Thursday night but he already has one thing going for him, he doesn’t beat 4 year old children.

Got to give credit where credit is due.

  27. Please god not Ponder. Anyone but Ponder. MBT should play before Ponder, the worst draft pick in Vikings history. Teddy on crutches is better than Ponder. Mckinnon at QB is a better option. He played a little QB at Southern. All that being said, If Ponder does play, he still has a chance at beating that pile of donkey crap the Packers call a defense.

  28. The way we ran against ATL, and gbay has the weakest rush defense in the league, EVEN WITHOUT PETERSON,we will torch gbay by running down their throat.

We will throw when needed, and at will with Patterson and Jennings, with a little bit of Jarius Wright thrown in there.

    Jerrick McKinnon will go off!!!!

  29. I think the packer fans are officially nervous about Teddy Bridgewater.

Just goes to show, you can have a former MVP QB, but if your oline is soft, and your defense is pathetic, I’d be nervous too!!!!

  31. The Bears just ran the clock out for the packers by running the ball, stats are deceiving, When you can go down the field and score at will under 3 .5 mins a drive then your defense will be on the field longer than the offense, so buckle up for the no huddle, and run all you want. alot of people in minnesota calling in sick friday.

  32. For the love of God, please tell me Ponder is not playing..

I’m shutting off the TV if they trot Ponder onto Lambeau Field.

    ==================================
Exactly- and because he felt discomfort just handing off, it would indicate that the clavicle wasn’t fully healed, so it would be stupid to play him, since if he got hit, odds are it would break. So it’s very possible that 6 weeks was overly zealous, considering the average time to heal from a broken clavicle. Now if you can get the medical reports, or are privy to the conversations of the Packers staff, and he was cleared and they said he refused to play, I would believe that. I’m probably not going to believe some guy who calls himself “In Teddy We Trust” who doesn’t understand the nature of injuries and has just decided to make things up about a QB who has been sacked more than most QB’s in the league- and I’m not even in a Packer fan.

  34. as a huge Packer fan it doesn’t matter who the Vikings will play at qb if we can’t stop the run… Unless we fix that, the Pack is in for a long year…

  35. Teddy playing is a bonus, but the guy the Pack better be concerned with is McKinnon. That kid is a former option QB, who can do everything on the field.

He may be a little dinged up. If not expect a coming out party.

  36. I’ve never completely forgot never stood the Ponder hate. The poor guy had a terrible offensive coordinator, weak coach and AP. He was never expected to throw a ton and even in practice probably focused on the running game. The team averaged something like 24 point a game with him under center, but the defense could never close games, yet HE sucks? He was drafted into a west coast offense which by definition shies away from the deep ball and people gave him crap for dumping off. Personally I think he has the potential to be a better Alex Smith than Alex himself if given the chance. The credit given Cassel last year was misplaced at best when he would step into a game they were already winning and close it out. The team should have never kept Cassel in the first place.

    But, but Ponder is terrible…

  37. Viking fans are just plain weird. They now think that, after one game, Bridgewater is a force to be feared when the Packers have played in Super Bowls and faced QB’s far more established and better than Bridgewater. This is what happens when you have a bandwagon fan base like the Vikings, which really doesn’t understand football very well and is dominated by housewives running around in Christian Ponder jerseys.

Then they get all upset about Packer fans coming on Vikings threads, yet when there is a Packer thread, they do the identical thing.

For football fans, Vikings fans are very knowledgeable about hockey.

I’m a Cubs fan and a Bears fan. Vikings fans remind me of White Sox fans. They are concerned about how everyone perceives them, yet no one really cares. Bears and Packers fans seem to have a mutual respect for each other while hating each others teams. Yet, Vikings fans, with their inferiority complex, continually make themselves look like fools.

    It’s fun to watch, however.

  38. First Ponder misses a playoff game because he had a bruise on his arm. A BRUISE!!!! Now Teddy can’t go because he fell on the grass!!!! On GRASS!!!! Why do we draft such fragile players????

  39. Viking fans are just plain weird. They now think that, after one game, Bridgewater is a force to be feared when the Packers have played in Super Bowls and faced QB’s far more established and better than Bridgewater.
    _______

Bears fans are just plain weird. They can’t understand elite talent when they see it, and, like Packer fans, they think that a Super Bowl championship in the past has some bearing on what the team will do in the present.

  40. I have to say, I come here now more to read the comments than the “news” stories, the idiocy of some of the comments are just too funny.
Seriously folks, listen to the players on your favorite team, they play for their pay checks, they couldn’t care less who the opposition is.
Sit back and enjoy the game, why you have to make yourself feel better by making immature comments about the opposition is beyond me.
I am a Packer fan, have been all my life even though I live a couple thousand miles away. However, I watched Bridgewater play against the Falcons and the kids got game. I want our best to play their best and may the best team win. If it’s the Pack, great but after the game is over, win or lose, let it go and look toward the next game. It’s what the players do.
All this name calling and what not is immature and really is so sad it’s funny. So… maybe don’t stop, I need the laugh.

  41. Remember when the GB trolls said the Vikings would be 0-5 after this coming game? THE VIKES ARE 2-2 AND ABOUT TO BE 3-2.

Notice the excuses piling up? The Rams defense is bad. The Falcons defense is bad. We played tougher teams than you did. The list goes on and on. More often than not, its the GB trolls that make up things just to put the Vikings down.

Just the other day some GB troll tried to tell me that AP must be on HGH cause he came back in 6 months after tearing EVERY ligament in his knee. How stupid is that. He used that when I made the statement (proven be medical fact easily found using Google) that Matthews groin injury was either exaggerated or he had pharmaceutical help due to his interception run last Sunday.

All the talk about Teddy’s “tiny hands” proves they now fear the Vikings. His hands are (verified to be) 1/8 smaller than “puny arms” Rodgers. 1/8th inch. Now if Rodgers can become MVP, then they gotta believe the same could happen to Teddy.

Plain and simple, GB trolls and fans alike are nervous about the Vikings on Thursday, this season and for many to come. GB is about to become cellar dwellers again just like they were pre Farve and they hate that FACT!

It’s time to “EMBRACE THE SUCK GB for another couple decades or more!

  42. @newluddite get’s it. As a huge PACK fan, I wish some of our posters would tone it down. vikes have a good kid in bridge. But don’t sleep on MY GUYS Rogers, Lacey, and Jordan Nelson!!! We have skill guys too! Let’s see what happens on Thurs. So pumped GO PACK!!!!

    >

  43. this guy played one game against the falcons defense and people are acting like he is a savior. Reminds me of when packer fans thought eddie lacy was the next Adrian Peterson.

  44. If Teddy plays and beats the Packers, are all you people calling him “Bustwater” going to come back on here and apologize and admit you were wrong?

Or will you continue to spout random crap with zero knowledge of the validity of what you’re saying?

    Don’t answer stupid, rhetorical question.

  45. Hey Viking stat fans here is one you forgot,
    Packers Superbowl Victories 4
    Vikings Superbowl Victories ” 0 ”

Hurts doesnt it, only going to get worse.Imagine going to a sports store and buyinga Vikings champion hat? no such item available.not even on ebay.

  46. Bears fans are just plain weird. They can’t understand elite talent when they see it, and, like Packer fans, they think that a Super Bowl championship in the past has some bearing on what the team will do in the present.
    ==================================
Nah. Wrong again. Long-term Bears fans have seen enough to know that greatness can be fleeting unless you see it consistently over a period time. They are more demanding than Vikings fans. We tend not to jump around like girls at a Justin Bieber concert every time something good happens.

Super Bowls in the past have no bearing on the present unless it’s fairly recent and you have an established organization that shows consistent success, although it certainly is nice to have a team steeped in history and is a source of pride for most fans. For instance, although it has nothing to do with today’s game, it’s far more rewarding to be fans of the Bears and Packers, who have roots in the development of the NFL and have won some championships and been at the top of the league, than to have to pull for a team like the Vikings that is known for losing 4 Super Bowls, a kicker who missed a critical field goal in the playoffs (that caused them to miss the Super Bowl) after making every field goal during the regular season, and an ex-Packer QB who threw an interception and missed a Super Bowl berth. Throw that in with ownership that was found guilty of racketeering and fraud, and mix in a little front office foolishness (the whole Peterson debacle), and you have the Minnesota Vikings.

  47. Also, I would like to point out I do always see a lot of intelligent, respectable Packer fans out there. My girlfriend, whom I live with, is a Packer fan. I bought her her first Packer jersey.

Every team has the same fans that are knowledgeable and respectable, and the same crappy fans that say whatever they like regardless of truth or even intelligence. The people who generalize all the fans of any one team are just plain ignorant, and I honestly wish there was a way to deny them the freedom of speech. So many people in the world truly don’t deserve to voice their opinion. >_<

  48. That little frail qb better play so it gives no excuse to the queenie trolls to still hang out here after they lose.

I remember last year all the hope and naivety from the little Vikings fans saying all the same boasting comments about Cassel, then Ponder, then Freeman, then Ponder again, then…its all so confusing.

I’m consistently amazed at how arrogant and mean-spirited Packer fans are when there’s so little in your home state to be proud of other than a mediocre football team.
