Doug Whaley: Mike Williams has requested a trade

The Bills sat wide receiver Mike Williams down on Sunday, a decision that coach Doug Marrone called “tough” while saying it was determined by the need to dress players who play on special teams.

Williams would prefer to be on a team that has a spot for him on the offense whether or not he also covers kicks.

Matthew Fairbun of Syracuse.com reports that Bills General Manager Doug Whaley said that Williams’s agent called him to ask for permission to look for a team interested in trading for his client. Whaley said that the team is not going to actively shop the wideout, who they acquired from Tampa in a trade for a sixth-round pick in the offseason, but that they would entertain the idea if they received “fair compensation.”

Getting that sixth-round pick back would probably qualify, especially if Williams is a minor enough part of the offensive plans that his lack of special teams work keeps him off the field. Williams, who is signed through 2018 and is set to make a base salary of $5.2 million next year, has eight catches for 142 yards and an 80-yard touchdown that accounts for a big chunk of his total production for the season.
