Chargers part ways with Richard Marshall

Marshall

He appeared in every game this season, with one start. Now, he’s gone.

The Chargers have released cornerback Richard Marshall, per a source with knowledge of the situation.

Marshall also played in every regular-season game (six starts) and started both postseason contests for the Chargers in 2013, his first year with the team.

Marshall was left in the dust on Thursday night by Broncos receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who scored on a 31-yard pass to break a 7-7 tie.

By cutting Marshall today, the Chargers actually did him a favor. After Tuesday’s trade deadline, the ninth-year veteran would have been subject to waivers. Instead, he’s a free agent.

It’s also possible the Chargers tried to trade Marshall before dumping him but found no takers for his contract, which pays a total base salary of $1.167 million in 2014. He can now be signed for the veteran minimum.
