Saints kick tires on tailbacks

Leshoure

For the Saints, Tryout Tuesday resulted in safety Jamarca Sanford getting a job. Sanford beat out veterans M.D. Jennings and Kenny Phillips.

Per a league source, the Saints also brought in a quartet of running backs for workouts: Tim Hightower, Andre Brown, Brian Leonard, and Mikel Leshoure. None were signed.

The Saints have been relying heavily on Mark Ingram in recent weeks; he has three straight 100-yard games after getting only one in three prior NFL seasons. Khiry Robinson and Pierre Thomas have been out with injuries.

Ingram also has been banged up. He was questionable for Sunday’s game against the 49ers with a shoulder injury, and he was absent for part of the game due to an injury. But it’s a contract year, so Ingram keeps going.

He may keep going right out of town. By choosing not to pick up a fifth-year option that would have cost $5.2 million, the Saints have guaranteed that Ingram will be a free agent. Then again, maybe he wouldn’t be having such a solid year if he wasn’t in a true contract year.
