Running back Michael Cox was thrust into the lineup during the Giants’ loss to the Seahawks last weekend after Peyton Hillis suffered a concussion, but Cox wasn’t destined for a long run in the lineup.

Cox fractured his leg in the fourth quarter of the game and the team brought an end to his season on Wednesday when they announced that Cox has been placed on injured reserve.

The 2013 seventh-round pick had four carries for 33 yards this season, which opened with Cox in the fourth spot on the depth chart behind Rashad Jennings, Andre Williams and Hillis. With Hillis recovering from his concussion and Jennings’s status for this weekend still unclear because of the knee injury that has sidelined him for more than a month, the Giants were left quite thin at the position when Cox went down.

They’ve remedied that by signing running back Orleans Darkwa to the 53-man roster. Darkwa made the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent and had three catches for 31 yards and four carries for two yards before being waived and moved to the practice squad last month.
