Report: Rob Ryan-Sean Payton relationship deteriorating, change coming

The Saints could justify changes on defense based on results alone.

But it appears that’s far from the only reason a change is expected.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the working relationship between head coach Sean Payton and defensive coordinator rob Ryan “has been rapidly deteriorating” over the course of this season, and that the two men “strongly dislike each other.”

Payton, the offensive mastermind, hasn’t quite found a comfortable relationship with any of his defensive coordinators, and this one seems doomed. The two men have had several animated discussions (which is pretty much the only kind Ryan has) on the sidelines, and the results this year have been little short of disastrous.

So making a change on the side of the ball that isn’t performing doesn’t seem like a shock.

Not quite sure why Sean Peyton is upset. They are tied for first place in the division and are on track for a home playoffs game.

Get rid of both. Get rid of Brees too

  3. p8riotdynastylives says: Nov 30, 2014 10:53 AM

Another Ryan wearing out his welcome……….what else is new??

  4. mcrummel says: Nov 30, 2014 10:54 AM

I would take Rob over Sean any day of the week.

  5. trodriguez89 says: Nov 30, 2014 10:56 AM

Pretty obvious too. I belive it was the game against the ravens where the saints had to take a time out on defense and Payton was obviously angry and was letting Ryan know about it. Only a matter of time till he’s gone.

Isn’t rob ryan due to take maternity leave?!?

  7. Iknowitall says: Nov 30, 2014 11:03 AM

It really boils my blood that the good ol boy network continues to give positions to those who have never demonstrated that they are actually great at what they do in previous hires.
Rob Ryan has NEVER shown that he is a very good D-Coordinator, yet he always gets a job.

Recycling coaches into same positions with new teams is pathetic.
Scour the college ranks, look for the up and coming brilliant young coaches with new ideas and give them a chance.
It cant be any worse than giving the Ryan boys chance after chance

The last time New Orleans had an All-Pro player on defense:

    2009 – darren sharper

  9. beefsbrother says: Nov 30, 2014 11:09 AM

I don’t think it’s any coincidence that Dallas’ defense has improved simply by him not being there, just as New Orleans’ stinks now.

  10. tjacks7 says: Nov 30, 2014 11:11 AM

Maybe this offseason Rex and Rob can join forces and ruin a third franchise together.

  11. fitzhughave says: Nov 30, 2014 11:12 AM

Ryan is used to clearing his belongings from the building. Give him a burger and he’s fine.

  12. axespray says: Nov 30, 2014 11:14 AM

Sean is probably just upset that he found out that Rodgers hurt his hamstring by accident and not by Rob putting a bounty on him.

  13. khalilmackattack says: Nov 30, 2014 11:15 AM

Sean Payton is an egotistical jerk. How many DCs is he gonna keep firing?

  14. firerogergoodellnow says: Nov 30, 2014 11:15 AM

“I’ll be out of work for like five minutes.”

  15. firerogergoodellnow says: Nov 30, 2014 11:16 AM

“At least in Dallas I could blame Tony Romo!”

  16. tmdill18 says: Nov 30, 2014 11:17 AM

“I’ll have another job within 5 minutes of getting fired”. Says Rob Ryan every time he gets fired.

  17. docboss says: Nov 30, 2014 11:17 AM

    Bo Pelini?

  18. cj77camberon says: Nov 30, 2014 11:19 AM

Payton all dro’d out. Get rid of the drug addict and keep Ryan.

  19. realnflmaster says: Nov 30, 2014 11:19 AM

Another DC gone from NO, yet the coach stays the same. Hmmmm.

  20. floridaslonechargersfan says: Nov 30, 2014 11:20 AM

Will never forget when Jerry Jones said “We are going to trim the fat around here” and then he fired Rob Ryan. Looks like New Orleans will be “trimming the fat” soon as well.

  21. raiderinva says: Nov 30, 2014 11:22 AM

Two years seems to be right on par with the Rob Ryan welcome…..

Oakland: Two years with Norv Turner, Gag order placed on Rob by Al Davis. The Next years don’t really count under Art Shell and Tom Cable.

Cleveland: Two years under Eric Mangini

Dallas: Two years under Jason Garrett

New Orleans: Now in the second year with Sean Payton.

Next up: two year stint with Marc Trestman in Chicago.

  22. SparkyGump says: Nov 30, 2014 11:26 AM

Rob Ryan is a fraud who knows more about pumpkin pie than how to run an NFL defense.

  23. papacrick says: Nov 30, 2014 11:31 AM

Iknowitall: I wouldn’t have agreed with you a year ago but seeing what the Lions have done by getting a new up and comer in Teryl Austin to replace the ancient Gunther Cunningham as DC and seeing how drastic the results are with basically the same personnel. Give the new guys a chance

  24. 49erstim says: Nov 30, 2014 11:31 AM

If you have problems with SEVERAL Defensive Coordinators then maybe, just maybe, YOU are the problem!

As for the guys above taking jabs at Ryan’s size….the maternity leave one was the funniest. Keep em coming. Lol

  25. mendenhallfumblemachine says: Nov 30, 2014 11:32 AM

Mcrummel you know nothing about football if you would honestly take Rob Ryan over Sean Payton. Enough said.

  26. shotgunwilly2012 says: Nov 30, 2014 11:37 AM

The Bars in New Orleans will miss him greatly…

  27. ravenswhat says: Nov 30, 2014 11:37 AM

    I’m shocked!!!

  28. luz56 says: Nov 30, 2014 11:39 AM

Does anyone see a pattern with this slob??

  29. heymister24 says: Nov 30, 2014 11:43 AM

Robby Ryan didn’t trade Darren Sproles.

  30. tmdill18 says: Nov 30, 2014 11:50 AM

Shocker that loud mouthed a-hole coach Buddy Ryan raised 2 loud mouthed a-hole coach sons.

  31. sdchicken says: Nov 30, 2014 11:59 AM

He turned around the worst defense in NFL history to a top 5 unit last year. The saints spent all their cap on Byrd who is out for the year on injury. Can you really go from top 5 to bad because of coaching? Maybe they need better players?

  32. mizzousooner says: Nov 30, 2014 12:04 PM

N.O. is about due for a total rebuild.

  33. bigbenownsthenfl says: Nov 30, 2014 12:05 PM

after the killer b’s crush this team today… ben, bell, brown, bryant…. saints fans will be crying in their chicken gumbo! steeler dey! saints 24 steelers 45 final

  34. uglydingo says: Nov 30, 2014 12:08 PM

Maybe this is the opportunity for Idzik to replace Rex Ryan with Rob Ryan. This would represent a change but maintain continuity in defensive system.
Hell, maybe Sean Payton could swoop on Rex and make a perfect swap.

  35. straydogg7571 says: Nov 30, 2014 12:09 PM

As soon as Oakland fired D.Allen, I thought he would fit in well with the Saints at D coordinator! That’s how far back I can remember thinking that Rob Ryan was on thin ice!

  36. jerruhjones says: Nov 30, 2014 12:21 PM

Maybe Rob and Rex can start their own team somewhere….they’ll both be out of work by January.

  37. schmitty2 says: Nov 30, 2014 12:40 PM

Ryan does need to go but in all honesty this is simply a battle of 2 of the biggest egos in the coaching game today.

  38. nyjetsfan08 says: Nov 30, 2014 12:48 PM

It’s both sides of the ball. Blame the defense and the offense. Man, this Payton guy doesn’t get along with his defense. I think they should clean house. Get rid of all the coaches and start fresh. Payton is one of the most overrated coaches. And Brees is sliding down. Let’s face it, Brees MAY get into the HOF. But he will never get into the discussion of Brady-Manning-Rodgers-and now Luck.

  39. sw19womble says: Nov 30, 2014 12:52 PM

Rob Ryan to team up with Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman in Oakland next season?

  40. abninf says: Nov 30, 2014 12:58 PM

Remember last season when everyone was bashing Jerry Jones for firing him, talking about how great he was in NO? I don’t suppose any of yall will give him credit for canning a weak D coach now.

  41. icdogg says: Nov 30, 2014 1:18 PM

    Da Bears.

    (good destination for Buddy’s sons)

  42. seachicken64 says: Nov 30, 2014 1:43 PM

Two unlikable people don’t get along in a work environment – what a surprise!
