Lovie Smith claims McCoy doesn’t have dislocated kneecap

McCoy

On Sunday, a source with direct, first-hand knowledge of defensive tackle Gerald McCoy’s condition said that McCoy suffered a dislocated kneecap during Sunday’s loss at Detroit.

On Monday, coach Lovie Smith disputed the report.

“There’s no truth to that,” Smith told the media on Monday. “Gerald bruised his knee and stayed out a few plays and then went back in. We would not put Gerald McCoy back into the game -- Gerald McCoy would not go back into the game if he could only play with one leg. So that’s not the case.”

We’ve reconfirmed that, indeed, the characterization provided on Sunday by a source with direct, first-hand knowledge of the injury was accurate.

It may be a matter of semantics. The kneecap, per the source, shifted. While not a full, complete, and total dislocation of the knee, it’s a subluxation of the kneecap, and still technically a dislocation of the kneecap.

Besides, we never reported or suggested that McCoy was hopping around on one leg. He obviously returned to the game and played on both legs.

Moving forward, the question is the amount of damage, if any, that was done as the kneecap moved out and back in.
