Marc Trestman trying to block out the “noise” about change

At 5-8 with one of the league’s most underachieving teams, Bears coach Marc Trestman is getting more questions than answers these days.

And not all of them reflect well on his leadership.

There’s a lot of noise out there,” Trestman said, via Adam L. Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times. “We’re all aware of that.”

Most recently, Trestman was forced to defend quarterback Jay Cutler and defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, both of whom have come under fire, and one of which could be fired.

“Jay Cutler, as long as he’s been healthy, has been the guy we’ve had in there and wanted to play,” Trestman said. “There’s been no indifference there whatsoever. . . .

“Jay and I talk daily. He has a very good understanding of how we feel about him.”

That’s one thing, but his defense of Tucker was more tepid.

“All we’re trying to do here is to get our football team in a position that we can be better on Monday night [against the Saints],” Trestman said when asked about Tucker’s future. “The focus inside this building is exactly that and has always been exactly that week to week. That’s all that’s been important to all of us here.”

That’s hardly an endorsement, and a change there seems likely. The quarterback problem might be harder to solve.
