Broncos lose Montee Ball for season

AP

Broncos running back Montee Ball’s season is over.

The Broncos announced today that Ball has been placed on season-ending injured reserve. Ball has been dealing with a groin injury.

Ball was supposed to become the Broncos’ full-time starter at running back this year, but he became a major disappointment instead. Ball averaged just 3.1 yards a carry this season while Denver’s other running backs fared much better: C.J. Anderson is leading the team in rushing and has an average of 5.0 yards a carry, Ronnie Hillman has 4.2 yards a carry, and Juwan Thompson has done solid work in a limited role and is averaging 5.2 yards a carry.

The Broncos have also activated linebacker Danny Trevathan from injured reserve, promoted tight end Dominique Jones to the 53-player roster and placed safety Quinton Carter on injured reserve.

    Montee Bust.

Darn they seem to have a nice little stable of backs there but it’s like they take turns getting injured. Sux. Get well Montee and the gang.

    Anderson is a boss anyway.

Good pass blocker. Good guy. But not the RB the Broncos need right now.

    Heal up Montee.

I have a feeling we will be seeing another Peyton manning season ended with an interception

with manning as the broncos qb, they’re not going to win a championship anyway. one of the best regular season qb ever, playoffs…not so much

I have been a fan of since his time at UW. I did figure his transition to the NFL would be a tough one. In college he would try to run up the middle and it wasn’t there he would just bounce it outside and “out athlete” everyone. In the NFL you aren’t allowed that luxury, as guys like Reggie Bush know.

I still think Ball deserves a little more time before labeling him as a bust. He has a ways to go to avoid that label but, he has barely played 20 regular season games in his short career.

Coming into this season I didn’t know CJ Anderson and Juwan Thompson even existed, but somehow they provide a pretty good punch for the Broncos running game. One very clear reason for the devaluation of the RB position(aside from the NFL becoming a passing league) is the fact that you can find a solid RB off the street these days. They’re everywhere, and unless you have an Adrian Peterson-type back…it no longer makes sense to pay mega-bucks to 1 RB and hand the ball off to him 35 times. Those days are almost completely over in the NFL, and rightfully so. I’m sure the top RBs in the NFL wish they could tote the rock 30 times and get paid more, but more RB by committees means guys won’t be getting injured as much…and it subsequently means longer careers for these backs.

More money, and a potentially shorter career, or less money and a longer career. I’m sure most guys would choose the latter.

You mean the Broncos gained CJ Anderson for the rest of the season.

  10. xrodzillax says: Dec 13, 2014 5:18 PM

The running game is what Denver needed and now they have it….C.J has done a terrific job against defensive teams like: Miami, KC and Buffalo and now Julius Thomas is back so watch out ….The Broncos are ready for the playoffs and they have a good shot at the Super Bowl

I live in Wisconsin and was happy the Packers drafted Eddie Lacy rather than Montee Ball. Our Badger running backs just seem to fizzle out in the NFL.

  12. shaggytoodle says: Dec 13, 2014 5:20 PM

Even Adrian Peterson isn’t worth the big bucks, because with so many serviceable RBs why would you want to tie up all that cap space.

Peterson commented about making 8 million dollars this season, for that money you could spend 1.5 Mil or less on a decent RB. Then still have almost 7 Mil to improve elsewhere depending if you want one great player or 2 decent ones.

RBs lose it so fast too, so the risk isn’t close to to the reward. Just look at guys like LT, Shaun Alexander, Portis, Chris Johnson, and many of those guys played when RBs were still making a bigger impact than they are now days.

Trade him to the Colts for a first rounder.

My fantasy team thanks him for participating but we’re rolling right into the Championship with CJ Anderson!!

Montee will be back and be a solid contributor. He was the #3 back at Wisconsin at the start of season, and # 1 after.

  16. immafubared says: Dec 13, 2014 6:25 PM

I remember reading how Monte and Levian were way better picks that Lacy at 2. Only one problem. Lacy plays. Doesn’t get hurt, does his job and is realiable.

  17. taintedsaints2009 says: Dec 13, 2014 6:27 PM

if you’re a running back on that team, you better not get injured because the backup will take your spot and you are done. no way montee ball is back on that team next year when anderson and thompson are looking very good.

  18. 2liveted says: Dec 13, 2014 6:44 PM

Montee Ball came into the league already with a little tread off his tires due to his workload at wisky. Additionally, his skill set allowed him to excel in college but was questionable for the pros. his big gainers were always jump cuts that unless you’re barry sanders never work in the nfl. AS a Badger and Packer fan I hoped him to do well but didn’t want the packers to select him as I didn’t think he would be a great pro. Also Badgers backs historically struggle in the nfl(I do have a different feeling about Melvin Gordon but he is a completely different type of back than most traditional sconnie backs). I wouldn’t label him a bust yet due to injuries and the talent is there he just needs to change his method of running.

Not the year he wanted or I wanted from him as a Denver fan, but I still think he can be really good. If Knowshon Moreno got like 17 chances in Denver, Montee at least deserves a 2nd.

Part of that, is because they get to play with such a wonderful O-line in college. Guys like Joe Thomas, Peter Konz, Carimi, Moffitt, Zietler and Travis Frederick The guys that don’t make it the NFL are still bigger than what the competition is use to seeing on a weekly basis That goes a long ways in helping a RB look well.

Another reason they have tough transition is, because the Badgers don’t really pass the ball to RBs out of the backfield mostly because there isn’t a need to. I think thats actually part of the reason Gordon decided to wait until this season to enter the draft.

  23. revren10 says: Dec 13, 2014 9:14 PM

Zero Super Bowl wins since they cheated the cap twice and got caught filming other teams

  24. justcallingit says: Dec 13, 2014 9:17 PM

All Wisconsin RBs are disappointments in the NFL. Ron Dayne, Montee Ball, and the next one will be the Melvin kid entering the draft this year.

Is it getting to the point now where every post that has the word Denver or Broncos ultimately has a couple of Peyton sucks comments? The article does not mention Peyton 1 time, but the idiot (jealous) fans of teams that are struggling to get into the playoffs can’t resist. They take the bait every time. I also can’t help myself because I love the references to Peyton’s playoff history when he took his team to the SuperBowl last year and he even beat the unbeatable post season superhero Tom Brady. Also how come people always mention Peyton’s weapons but ATL, CHI, WSH all have stud weapons and all you hear is “well if Brady had Manning’s weapons.” Give me a break

too bad for him not all the defenses he played was a Bo pelini defense

  28. joewill85 says: Dec 14, 2014 12:45 AM

They need to waive him and stick with Anderson, Hillman, and Thompson. No need for a 4th back that’s more expensive than the other 3.
