The Bills needed to make a roster move to open up a spot for running back C.J. Spiller this week and they did it on Tuesday.

They announced that they have released fullback Frank Summers. The team didn’t formally add Spiller to the active roster yet, but they didn’t announce a corresponding move with Summers’s departure so that’s likely just a matter of time.

Summers started six of the first seven games this season, but has been inactive for the past four weeks as the Bills have given playing time to tight end/fullback MarQueis Gray instead. Summers had six carries for 17 yards and a touchdown along with five catches for Buffalo before his second season with the Bills came to an end.

Coach Doug Marrone said Monday that Spiller’s role for Sunday will be determined by how he looks in practice this week. It’s the first week he’s eligible to play since being placed on injured reserve with the designation to return after breaking his collarbone earlier this season.
