Chargers say they will remain in San Diego in 2015

The San Diego Chargers will remain in San Diego for at least one more year.

Amid talk that the Chargers could move to Los Angeles as soon as the 2015 season, the team released a statement this evening saying that they are committed to staying in San Diego next year.

“On February 1st of every year since 2007, the Chargers have been eligible to terminate the team’s lease for Qualcomm Stadium. And each year since 2007, the Chargers have announced that the team will not exercise the termination clause and instead continue to work toward a permanent stadium solution in San Diego,” the team said in its statement. “Today, the Chargers are making the same announcement that the team has made each year since 2007: The team will not be exercising the lease termination clause and will keep working to find a publicly acceptable way to build a Super-Bowl quality stadium in San Diego. Calendar year 2015 will constitute the team’s fourteenth year of work on a San Diego stadium solution.”

Whether the Chargers and San Diego can ever come to terms on building the kind of stadium the team wants remains to be seen. But the Chargers are going to keep trying, for at least one more year.

Seriously, why not move oakland – they were there before and unless you are nyc, having 2 teams as close as oak & sf (san jose) are, it doesn’t make sense.

Looks like we get the Rams on the upswing. I’ll be in attendance when they play my Packers.

The next team to relocate will be the Minnesota Vikings.

No fan support, lousy college stadium, and 5 straight last place finishes.

    Time to move on.

  4. knucklehead93 says: Dec 16, 2014 9:18 PM

As a Viking fan, I hope the Chargers stay. No fan base should have to live through a relocation, or a threat of it. We’re pulling for you!

their stadium is just such a dump. and the fans get a lot of BS from other fans for not selling out, but the truth is they charge insane prices to go to a stadium that is lower quality than most local high school stadiums.

its straight up trash, and in a league with athletes getting contracts over 100 million, and coaches making 5 million a year, how can you justify playing in such a total dump?

  7. tolan04 says: Dec 16, 2014 9:26 PM

  8. rajbais says: Dec 16, 2014 9:27 PM

It’s Dean Spanos. He’s not that prepared for anything so spontaneous.

In other words, you’ll keep working to get welfare for a billionaire who has zero need of it while the city and and towns in the area continue to lose police, fire, medical, teacher and other vital personnel as budgets get ever tighter.

Lived in the San Diego area when Jack Murphy (beloved sportswriter for the SD Union newspaper) Stadium was built, and remember well the old Balboa Stadium in the good old days of the AFL. Even remember Mission Valley was an upscale shopping area before the stadium was built.
Sadly, the ‘Murph’ is too old and decrepid. Should be replaced.
Heck, even remember when the Los Angeles Chargers made their way south. Hope it doesn’t reverse itself.
Hey San Diegans – how about building a new stadium?

  22. pantherpro says: Dec 16, 2014 9:50 PM

Don’t move to LA Super Chargers! Let the trash in Oakland move to LA and leave entire Bay to the Niners. They already own the bay other than the 20,000 lowlifes that show up to Raider games. They will follow their team to LA and worry about their rent when they get home.

  24. chrisdavidgarcia says: Dec 16, 2014 9:54 PM

One step closer to the Rams coming to Los Angeles. Just in time for them to make a playoff run. Karma to you St Louis. I will never forget Georgia thanking the wonderful St. Louis Fans after the 99′ Superbowl and forgetting about us California Rams fans that suffered through the heartbreaking years as Rams fans. Its only fitting that we get a Superbowl contender back.

  25. carlsbadboltfan says: Dec 16, 2014 10:04 PM

Yep, and the Chargers have been consistent in their willingness to stay.

As far as a new stadium goes:

    1) A site has been chosen – up the street from Petco
    2) Owners have put up half the cost.
    3) NFL has put up one quarter of the cost
    4) Last remaining quarter needs to be decided.

Problem is, you can’t build ANYTHING in San Diego without someone suing you first. Case in point : the SD Convention Center expansion. San Diego followed the same plan that San Jose used to expand their convention center. Someone sued the city, but the judge threw it out. San Jose’s expansion got underway.

San Diego follows San Jose’s model. Gets sued, but the judge allows the suit to go forward. You can’t make this stuff up.

  30. iloveagoodnap says: Dec 16, 2014 10:20 PM

As I’ve said 1000 times before on here, Spanos has said often, and publicly, that not only does he not want to move to LA but that he is against any team moving to LA. The fact that they continue to be mentioned as a prime candidate to move to LA is baffling.

  31. raiderrob21 says: Dec 16, 2014 10:22 PM

I’m not a charger fan but I am rooting them to stay in the San Diego area. It’s such an awesome place to visit and catcha game. Great fans. Great people And then they have the talent to be a great team Maybe a few parts here and there but overall a very solid core of players with no real weeknesses, other than some of the pass proect.

The Changes need to be a little preeictible. Off takle left, off tackle right, bang inside and then somewhere in thr=e middle o it all yut

  36. chargersfan13 says: Dec 16, 2014 10:34 PM

This is idiotic to say the least.

The Chargers are a good team with a rich history. The city is a great city, and one that could host Super Bowls on a consistent basis.

Why is this so hard to figure out?

  37. fordmandalay says: Dec 16, 2014 10:37 PM

In other words; the billionaire owner of the Chargers has still not been able to convince either Los Angeles or San Diego to give him free real estate to build a new stadium on, and pay for a new stadium out of taxpayer money. He’ll try again next year.

  39. samndjsdad says: Dec 16, 2014 10:42 PM

Fifty four years and one super bowl appearance (a blowout loss). I’m sure the general public will be lining up to help finance a new stadium. Maybe they could at least raise enough money to clean the bathrooms and get rid of the constant pee smell.

  40. dabeagle says: Dec 16, 2014 10:42 PM

Same place they will be staying come playoff time.

  42. reptar310 says: Dec 16, 2014 10:49 PM

Back when the Raiders and Rams were in LA they played in terrible stadiums. Almost every NFL team was getting a new (and in some cases 2nd) stadium since the Raiders/Rams had been in LA. The owners pushed the city for new stadiums. The City refused. The owners knew the NFL would never let a successful team making big money move, so the 2 owners made the decision to strip down the teams to bare bones and suck so fans wouldn’t want to see them. With bad teams and low attendance, it made it easy to move.

The Dodgers had a 20 year playoff drought, the Clippers were awful until lately, and the Kings never won anything until a couple years ago. The last place Lakers are still supported, and have a 3 year wait for season tickets. All of them were supported during bad times… The LA “only supports a winner” is a myth.

Cities with failed NFL franchises who now have teams again:

    Cleveland Bulldogs, Rams, Browns
    Boston Redskins
    Chicago Cardinals
    Dallas Texans
    Oakland Raiders
    Baltimore Colts
    St Louis Cardinals
    Houston Oilers

  44. quicktaker says: Dec 16, 2014 11:03 PM

    1. The Chargers will not leave unless someone else builds a stadium for them. The Spanos family is cheapness personified. Roski and Anschutz won’t build a stadium unless they own the team. The Chargers are going nowhere.
    2. Davis isn’t rich enough, doesn’t have enough clout, and doesn’t have the persuasive abilities to get a stadium built. The Raiders are going nowhere.
    3. St. Louis’s Kroenke has the resources to move Los Angeles but he too probably doesn’t like the cost of moving. The Rams moving is conceivable but unlikely.

Dear San Diego, Oakland, and St. Louis,
Hang tough and don’t fold so easily. The NFL needs you more than you need the NFL.

They aren’t leaving San Diego. They never were leaving San Diego. This is a headline driven business and I guess the Chargers going to LA is a good headline but it was never a serious conversation. They’re going to put a measure on the 2016 ballot…it will pass…and the bolts should have a new downtown stadium by 2022. A stadium that will host Super Bowls, Final Fours, heck you name it…who wouldn’t want to come to San Diego for a huge party.

Why build a “Super Bowl quality stadium” for a team that will never play in a Super Bowl in the stadium?

  62. navyvike says: Dec 17, 2014 2:08 AM

If St. Louis and Oakland move to Los Angeles, the situation in San Diego will become dire, as the locals will never approve billionaire welfare for a new stadium, and Spanos will not use his own money to upgrade their current home to Super Bowl standards. Each year, the Charges will play in a progressively worse stadium without the leverage of Los Angeles.

  67. sandersmarcus10 says: Dec 17, 2014 7:21 AM

Why would they build a Super Bowl quality stadium for a NON Super Bowl quality team? Been living in San Diego the last 22 years and except the ONE team that went to the Super Bowl and got crushed by the 49ers they havent done nothing to warrent it!

  68. MTLighthouse69 says: Dec 17, 2014 7:25 AM

The Chargers have had multiple opportunities to move their team. I think it is abundantly clear that they don’t want to move, but may have no choice if they can’t find a way to build a stadium in San Diego.

That said, any of the other NFL owners who are pushing hard to have a team or teams in Los angeles and/or a team in England, ought to be prepared to move their own team to either of those locations. If they aren’t prepared to that then I think they ought to keep their collective mouths shut about it. By talking, the only thing they are accomplishing is angering fan bases which may lose their team.

In theory, what they could do is add a seventeenth game to the schedule and also eliminate the divisions. Add two new franchises so that each conference has a seventeenth team, and then have a schedule where each team plays a team in its own conference once. That way, no team gets moved and it also hasd the added benefit of having the teams with the best records make the playoffs.
Of course that would mean that there wouldn’t be any AFC VS NFC games, but I am fine with that. I would by like the MLB used to be with no interleague play.

  69. MTLighthouse69 says: Dec 17, 2014 7:29 AM

ETA: Actually, they wouldn’t have to add any additional games, since a team can’t play itself.

Being a die-hard fan in a bandwagon town my only hopes is that we win our next two games, then we take a page from the 2011 NY Giants and get hot and win a super bowl. Anything less than an AFC championship game and our apathetic fan base will not support a new stadium.

Just don’t try to convince any of us that had the Chargers won that Super Bowl against the 49ers, it would have somehow turned you into a Chargers fan. I say BS to that.

You may be on your 2nd or 3rd wife, you may have moved on to different careers in your life, but one thing is certain: wherever you came from, whoever your team was before you moved to beautiful San Diego, that is still your team. I just have a problem with fake Charger fans opining about what San Diego should do for a stadium.

  81. chinahand11 says: Dec 17, 2014 11:41 AM

San Diego fans are still leery about committing tax dollars to a new football stadium as they got stung on Petco Park for the baseball team. The frenzy-whipping tush-kissing media got that park voted in and the fans have looked at mediocrity ever since. Like it’s okay to contend every three or four years.

Now the media is doing the same thing; heard on the radio this morning (Mighty 1090) “look Charger fans, you’re going to have to get used to the idea of higher taxes and we really need a new stadium or the Chargers are gone to L.A.”

Paraphrasing, but just like that, for the past few days. Sick of this crap. Not a Charger fan, just a transplanted Pats fan, but the whole scenario sux. Seen it before, folks.
