Seahawks extend K.J. Wright

The Seahawks have locked up a young starter on their stellar defense for the next four years.

K.J. Wright, the 25-year-old linebacker who has started all 14 games this season, has signed a four-year extension.

“In the offseason, we identified K.J. as one of our core players moving forward and aimed to keep him as a part of the Seahawks family for a long time,” G.M. John Schneider said in a statement. “The timing of this signing gives us the ability to keep as many of our core players together as we possibly can. Since Day One, K.J. has been a true professional in his daily approach and we are excited for K.J., his family and the 12s to keep him in the organization.”

The Seahawks drafted Wright with the 99th overall pick in 2011 and he became a starter as a rookie. He’s a big part of the Seahawks’ defensive success and would have been a big target of other teams in free agency next year, but now he’s in Seattle for the long haul.

Awesome for KJ! Russell and Bobby, YOU’RE NEXT!

Bye Bye Malcolm Smith. Super Bowl MVP to released after this year. Its strictly a “what have you done for me lately” business and they still have to sign Wagner. Smith hasn’t played a down during the Hawks great recent 4 game domination.

Hell yea. Well deserved. Next is Wilson.

Watch Smith and Maxwell land good deals in free agency.

    Go haWks

Love it! KJ is one of the most underrated players on the Hawks D. Now we gotta lock up Bobby in the middle and the core of this D will be set for years to come!

    Your move santa clara

This is the guy who made it possible for that team to move on from that trash ass bust Aaron Curry. Also I saw him completely dominate Jimmy Graham in coverage last season on Monday Night Football. Was hoping we’d score him in FA but I guess Seattle knows Lynch is retiring or something and they’d have more salary cap space freed up.

Seattle has plenty of cap space. A little restructuring here and there and they will be fine. 90% sure Malcolm Smith remains with the team as well.

Tremendous signing! Love this guy’s size, coverage ability, and instincts/football IQ. Seahawks front office at a championship level too.

  16. str8shewter says: Dec 18, 2014 3:46 PM

Jon Gruden called K.J. Wright the best outside linebacker in the NFL earlier this season on MNF. Seahawks got a steal of a deal!

  17. dukeearl says: Dec 18, 2014 3:49 PM

For you haters hoping that Seattle will run into cap hell. They have almost 33 million in cap space going into 2015. (Prior to this signing).

They have enough cap to sign Russel and room to spare.

  18. qdog112 says: Dec 18, 2014 3:51 PM

Maxwell will get signed. They’re not letting him get away. Book it.

Made my day! Jack of all trades and can cover the pass like a beast with his length and speed.

This deal is gonna look even better 2 years from now. 4 years 27 mill is a steal for this guy. Love John Schneider, he’s a pimp!!!

  24. kuranda84 says: Dec 18, 2014 6:56 PM

    Marvelous! So underrated.

They’ll lock up Wilson and BWags in Feb. I can see Malcolm and Maxwell walking for bigger contracts. Either way, the Man Child Schneider will find great rookies.

  25. scoobaj says: Dec 19, 2014 1:21 AM

I keep hearing the “when SEA pays Wilson, they will crumble” nonsense. Even if they pay him Brady money, they still have plenty to sign Lynch, Wagner and Maxwell next year. If you look closely at the Sherman, Thomas and Chancellor deals, they are very cap friendly for the return on the talent. Hawks should be in contention for awhile.

  26. hdavid55 says: Dec 19, 2014 7:32 AM

Seattle also has Miller and Hauska under contract for another year, as well as McDaniel…Wagner and Wilson next year…possibly Kearse too…Seattle also has 11 picks in next years draft due to free agency losses this year

  27. sayly75 says: Dec 19, 2014 7:43 AM

yes, it is good news plus Seahawks are also 7 in the league with the best cap space of 37 million. Lots of room to sign Wilson and Wagner plus many more to help sure up a good team.

  28. skawh says: Dec 19, 2014 12:30 PM

I’m just not seeing what ev’one sees in KJ. He can’t cover. Didn’t you see how badly he got burned on the Philly TE score a few weeks ago? He was 5 yards behind the guy. KJ is slow by cover LB standards, and I don’t see him being a one man wrecking crew like other LB’s in the league. Sorry, I’m disappointed in this signing.

  29. vancouversportsbro says: Dec 19, 2014 2:53 PM

If Al Davis was still around Malcolm Smith would become the highest paid player in the league.
