Torrey Smith: “Horrible feeling” that this could be last game with Ravens

AP

The Ravens need a win and some help to make the playoffs, which means that Sunday’s game against the Browns could wind up being their final game of the 2014 season.

If that’s the case, it will be time to start making plans for the offseason. One of the decisions that the team will have to make concerns wide receiver Torrey Smith, whose contract expires after the end of the season. Smith said this week that he would like to remain with the Ravens.

“As bad as it is not going to the playoffs, that’s a horrible feeling knowing that it’s a possibility that I might not be here next year,” Smith said, via ESPN.com. “But I’m not really worried about that. I’m trying to win this game and see what happens.”

Smith lamented how inconsistent he’s been this season on the way to 45 catches, 684 yards and 10 touchdowns and vowed that next year will be different whether he’s in Baltimore or on another team. That inconsistency won’t help him a top-tier contract, but it might wind up helping his chances of staying with the Ravens if the team also wants to continue the relationship.

Don’t worry Torrey In Ozzie We Are Disgusted will have trouble drafting a good receiver so you are safe until he goes after a free agent which is his usual avenue. Unless he lies to you, which he is very accomplished at…just ask Goodell.

There are better options for Torrey than Baltimore, i.e. Seahawks, Packers, Colts, and Patriots.

He does know they can clinch Sunday, right? Or has he, and possibly the rest of the roster, given up?

Whether they try to sign Smith or not, I hope NE never drafts another receiver (or edge rusher, for that matter). They suck at it, and would be far better off trying to fill those roster slots via trade or free agency.

    Ozzie’s offseason priorities:
    1. Fix the secondary
    2. re-sign Torry Smith
    3. Tight End
    4. Running back

#’s 1, 3 and 4 can all be addressed in the draft

    Ozzie’s offseason priorities:

10 Touchdowns, but poor route running. Put him in the ‘all he does is catch touchdowns’. I am sure the Ravens want to keep him, but I am just a little bit more sure that someone else will pay more than the Ravens are comfortable with and he will be gone.

You know he secretly wants to play for that Cincinnati team that consistently knocks baltimore out of playoff contention. ^yeah all of those ONE times? Don’t know what games you been watching, but last year is the only time I recall cinci actually knocking bmore out of the playoffs. As far as Torrey “only catching touchdowns”. Isn’t that pretty much the number one goal to score points? Not to mention all of the things he does off the feild. Id be really dissapointed to see him go.

  24. occamssabre says: Dec 26, 2014 12:35 PM

Love the guy off the field but he’s sorely lacking in strength/power and route-running ability. He’s too soft to power through contested passes on “9’s” and cannot beat press coverage on slants or quick cuts against average cb’s. Moreover, he drops too many passes, even the ones where he’s open and it’s placed EXACTLY where it should be.

If he comes back at a slightly higher than vet minimum I’d be OK with that but he’s certainly not worth breaking the bank for! Disappears far too often in big games IMO.

  25. j0esixpack says: Dec 26, 2014 12:35 PM

This is the part where Ravens fans explain that Flacco is the best QB in the league, is worth $20 million a season, and assert that type of salary won’t impact the long term signing of other players as Flacco’s cap hit balloons to $28.5 million in 2016

  26. huddlestondb says: Dec 26, 2014 1:21 PM

  28. abirdfan says: Dec 26, 2014 5:06 PM

I watched Tory all year. How many psaa interference calls did he get to extend drives. RESIGN TORY SMITH!

  29. jmscooby says: Dec 26, 2014 6:14 PM

JMHO, but he needs a deep threat to allow him to be the underneath receiver. He’s a basket catcher that can be electric with the ball in his hands in the open field. Give it to him earlier and don’t make him rely on his hands farther down the field.

Um…you might want to check your history. Except for last year, Baltimore has gone further than Cincy every year since Torrey got there. Since 2008 the Ravens are 9-4 in the postseason (appeared every year except last) and the Bengals are…hmm….looks to me like 0-4. Yep, four one-and-dones.

I’ve seen Torrey’s numbers. Steve Smith has been the number one. But Kubiak’s offense was predicated on a healthy Pitta and Daniels, and Ray Rice in the backfield. Forsett over-achieved. Torrey is a good receiver. But he’s not going to get a franchise tag or big money. It can be used elsewhere. But from what jmscooby said, he would be a good fit in the Patriots offense. Torrey is even behind LeVeon Bell in receiving yardage. Not to mention some other teams number 2’s like Calvin Johnson and Cobb. And to think CJ Mosley is going to the Pro-bowl while Arthur Brown sits on the bench and rookie receivers like Beckham and Evans and Benjamin were available in the draft. Not blaming Ozzie. Ravens had a lot of bad luck starting with Rice. Bengals and Steelers got lucky this year.

  32. jimmyjames65 says: Dec 26, 2014 8:34 PM

Isn’t Andre Johnson a FA? I know Crabtree is. Don’t want him. Dez Bryant is, but I don’t see him leaving, not to mention the price tag. Randall Cobb, I bet you get your monies worth.

  33. jimmyjames65 says: Dec 26, 2014 9:15 PM

At least the Ravens don’t have to worry about the browns

  34. jimmyjames65 says: Dec 26, 2014 9:28 PM

Even Eric Decker has more receiving yards.

  35. steelerswillbefine says: Dec 26, 2014 11:32 PM

jimmyjames65, Steelers and Bengals lucky? They pretty much all have the same schedule. The big difference is that the Steelers are 5-1 against winning teams, Bengals 4-3, and the Ravens were 2-6. 7-0 against non winning teams is the only reason they have a chance at the playoffs.

Torrey Smith is a decent #2 WR who will more than likely be overpaid by someone who still believes that he can develop further and deliver #1 WR value.

    They’ll be wrong.

You did realize Arthur Brown wasn’t drafted this year he was drafted the year before, not this Brown isn’t a rookie.

Been watching this guy play for many years now (Terp years included). In my opinion, thanks for your service and by all means go get overpaid by a team that wants you.

Torrey is a great guy, but a just above average wideout. He wastes his speed by playing defenders rather than accelerating to dime deep balls from Joe. He’s not great at going up and muscling a ball away from a defender ( one that he’s usually larger than). Finally, he tries to catch balls like he’s trapping it with frying pans.

    He’s a better DHB.

  41. tedguy says: Dec 28, 2014 12:29 PM

burdowbhottopic: I think having Anquan Boldin around really helped Torrey, and Torrey took a step backwards when Anquan left.

  42. highlogic says: Dec 28, 2014 4:21 PM

He earned that extension today- single handedly brought them back to life and put them in the playoffs. How bout that? Il take touchdowns all day .
