Report: Casserly contacting candidates to be Jets’ GM, coach

Getty Images

Charley Casserly, the former Redskins and Texans general manager who’s now working as a consultant for Jets owner Woody Johnson, is already contacting candidates to be the Jets’ next head coach and next General Manager.

That’s the word from Dom Cosentino of NJ.com, who reports that the Jets are moving quickly on the idea that head coach Rex Ryan and General Manager John Idzik both figure to be fired after Sunday’s season finale.

Ryan hasn’t been told he’s fired, but that move is so clearly coming that Ryan has already reportedly cleared out his office. Idzik’s firing hasn’t been seen as quite the sure thing that Ryan’s is, but given the lack of talent on the roster, and particularly Idzik’s inability to find a franchise quarterback, it’s easy to see why Idzik would get the boot as well.

Big changes are needed with the Jets. It appears that Johnson will begin making those changes within the next 48 hours.

UPDATE 11:40 a.m. ET:  The league has no comment on the possibility that, if the report is correct, Casserly and the Jets are violating the league’s tampering rules.

Casserly should start by firing the guy he bought his awful toupee from.

  2. clashpoint says: Dec 27, 2014 8:19 AM

The Jets have got some decent talent on defense everywhere except possibly cornerback. So with the combined lack of franchise quarterback on offense and poor offensive output in general, I’m betting they go for an offensive guy this time. They’ve got to get both head coach and general manager settled as quick as possible this off-season, they’ve got a lot of work ahead of them. Could be a particularly interesting draft for the Jets too.

  3. berniemadoffsides says: Dec 27, 2014 8:21 AM

Rex isn’t the problem. You’ve had years of awful management there from Woody and terrible GM’s and contracts.

  4. fin72 says: Dec 27, 2014 8:21 AM

Maybe Rex should consult with Charley on how to properly clean out your office being as he has extensive experience.

  5. tonebones says: Dec 27, 2014 8:25 AM

Idzik is a cap guy. He just needs to hire a good scouting director. If they hire a GM with a scouting background, that guy could get bogged down in the things Idzik is better suited for. Everyone thinks you have to start firing without focusing and aiming. That’s crazy. And you don’t save money either buy eliminating good people. If you spend wisely in your personnel department, you can save millions of dollars in the long run. It’s like saying the Texans should cut J.J. Watt just because they’re losing. Firing Idzik doesn’t make sense.

Just walk across the Stadium parking lot

Knock on the door and ask to speak to Mr. Mara say please sir my I be your DC I will shut my mouth not talk to the press and fix the part of your team that is broken.

  7. nflfollower says: Dec 27, 2014 8:27 AM

Bad news for geno smith. Jets will be drafting another rookie in the next 2 years at qb. Everyone is chasing the next Brady or Rodgers, but the chances are much better to just build a defense and running game and get an average qb who can limit his mistakes…

Whoever comes in should focus on the rest of the roster before investing in a qb

  8. chieftaindawg says: Dec 27, 2014 8:27 AM

Rex should just have one big party week on the NYJ. Just cause he deserves it.

    Good luck with that.

Not to say the Idzik era of the NYJ hasn’t had a rocky start, but if you start to fire every GM who hasn’t found a “franchise QB” within 2 years, you’d quickly run out of qualified candidates.

I think they should fire everyone n management, cut, release or trade all the players, change the team name, re-do the uniforms and find a new dedicated building to play in. Only through this comprehensive remake of the franchise can they remove the stench of the last several years.

Exactly. That is why I also advocate that they raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour, because of course people who own businesses are happy to see their payroll expenses double overnight, and will not immediately fire half of their workers or replace them with machines in order to keep expenses at their current levels.

Wow – anyone who thinks Rex can be a good head coach needs to look back at how he destroyed a young talented QB’s confidence by guaranteeing a SB (twice) brought in Tebow, flirted w Manning and then gave Sanchez a $20 mil extension to shore up his confidence while giving another “guarantee” that he’d always be the starter only to cut him18 months later putting the team in salary cap hell and making he and the organization a laughing stock

And that’s saying a lot when the owner’s name is a joke punch line that often incurs FCC fines!

This team has a lot of money to work with in cap space next year, but then their ranking of available space drops in the next season as well as the season after that. It will be very interesting to see what kind of plan the new GM comes up with to try and make this team into the best team. Since Casserly has a lot of GM experience, so it would be very interesting to know what he is looking for that he thinks would make a good GM as opposed to himself.

  46. carloswlassiter says: Dec 27, 2014 10:07 AM

I’ really tired of the Rex defenders arguing that he “never had a franchise QB”.

Do you think such QB’s just show up ready to play? or does coaching play any roll in this at all? If Brady was on the Jets, I’m thinking he would have been a scrub who was released after 3 years. If Teddy Bridgewater was on the Jets he’d look like Geno; in Minnesota, under Norv Turner, the guy looks like he has potential.

  48. MTLighthouse69 says: Dec 27, 2014 10:12 AM

The head coach of the team is supposed to be a person who is an overseer of the entire coaching staff.

The problem with Rex, is that he is a defensive coordinatoor who wants to be a head coach. If you want to be a head coach, you have to care about the offense, defense, special teams, and game management. You can’t just get the title and care only about the defense.

Rex is not and never has been a multi-tasker. He is basically the defensive version of Norv Turner.

  49. wnstonchill says: Dec 27, 2014 10:18 AM

Rex Ryan can coach up a defense?? The Jets defenses have allowed more points than the Jets offense in 12 out of 15 games this year! Stop with this defensive guru crap and start calling a spade a spade. Rex sucks. That’s the truth!

  53. mancave001 says: Dec 27, 2014 10:58 AM

Not a Rex fan at all initially, but I’ve turned around on him over the past two years. He’s in a no-win situation. Idzik is not just bad, he’s ungodly bad. Ryan coached a team with even less talent than this one to an 8-8 record last year. This year has just been a train wreck. Rex will land on his feet. I wouldn’t mind seeing him come to Philly to be the DC or be a pass d coordinator.

  54. joeconnorjr says: Dec 27, 2014 11:00 AM

How is Casserly able to contact prospective head coaches without violating the League’s tampering rules?

Here are the rules as I understand them:

    1. In season, NO contact with a Head Coach under contract, no permission can even be requested.

    2. In season, NO contact with an Assistant Coach under contract, no permission can even be requested and no permission can be granted by the employer club.

Does this mean Casserly is contacting only college coaches or unemployed NFL coaches?

  55. tigerlilac says: Dec 27, 2014 11:06 AM

Woody Johnson has surrounded himself with people he can control: Mike Tannenbaum, Idzik, and Rex. Don’t kid yourself, Rex sold himself out for the opportunity to coach without getting any of the real power – – that’s weak. The question is: Does Johnson have any learning curve and can he hire a quality guy and give him control or will he want another “executive committee” comprised of front office men and coaches that have little autonomy. Johnson, despite his vast wealth, is insecure and needs to be in control, because he never earned what he has in life. Everyting has been given to him.

  56. hakunamangata says: Dec 27, 2014 11:10 AM

There’s a reason the jets are a mess there woody, and honestly it isn’t going to be solved by getting rid of the best coach you’ve had since Parcells.

Idzik is a step in the right direction but he didn’t low ball every free agent (revis, cromartie, fanaca, johnson) and leave scraps playing key positions.

No that would be you, the cheapest owner this side of Cincinnati

  57. chuckshontaspads says: Dec 27, 2014 11:10 AM

Not only does this entire scenario (Casserly looking for a new coach) smack of idiocy but really, really skirts the edge non-tampering rules unless Casserly is only talking to college or high school coaches. And who the heck ever announced they were doing a coaching search when the season isn’t over (unless the coach has been fired)?
Johnson and his sycophants simply cannot get out of their own ways when it comes to buffoonery. Then they announce it to the press. “Yes we know he’s still the head coach but … ”

Do any of you armchair GM’s have any idea what you are spewing??
Destroyed a young talented QB? Sanchez?? Who’s coach at USC was Pete Caroll who said he wasn’t ready for the NFL and I do believe Caroll knows what he’s talking about. He’s had a little success, no? And Sanchez has spent over a year rebuilding his game from scratch after even having the strength to throw after his surgery. And where is he now? In one of the easiest progression offenses in the NFL ad his same turnover problems still plague him. He had “success” in his first seasons as a jet because on a top 3 defense, an amazing O-Line with a great rushing game, and limited passing concepts he needed to use.

Johnson is the one who wanted to Tebow, he has a flare for the dramatic. And when you have questions at quarterback who wouldn’t at least attempt to enter talks with Manning. Not doing so would be biting off your nose to spite your face.

And where Sanchez’s contract extension is concerned you need to look to mike tannenbaum who is no longer part of an NFL team and is now a sports agent btw. I happen to like Tannenbaum but it should still be noted. It usually goes agent to management not vice versa. And I would have waited to extend that contract there was no reason to sign it early. But bear in mind even if you didn’t feel strongly about Sanchez there wasn’t another signing available after manning was gone that would put you in better place regardless.

Do you think coaches make contract decisions? And mark Sanchez being cut did nothing to put the jets in salary cap hell, do you have any idea what you’re talking about at all????

And a head coach always has to support his players. How’s it working out for Jay Gruden? And he’s just being honest with things everyone can see.

Rex has some of the best defensive concepts and hidden pressures in the league. And say what you will but Rex gets his guys to play hard for him. His players love him. That is so important as a head coach, having your locker room around you.

And no one expected Geno to be a great franchise AB. With all of the teams having need at QB he still slid through the first round. The real telling of John Idzik is to leave 20+ million dollars of open cap space heading into the season and not be willing to sign any solid FA CB( Talib, Cromartie, Revis, which was probably woody) that are essential components in Rex’s defensive concepts. You have a kid that played LB/safety in college playing starting corner on the Jets.

I’ll never look at this again and no one of sound mind should waste time like I just did informing the willing fool but what you should really ask is, before you want to fire Rex so badly, who is going to replace him? Who’s available that would be better? You’re not getting Harbaugh. Mike Smith would be the only option I could see.

But good for Rex. Change will be better for his career. He won’t be available for a week unless he wants to take his time.

I still think Ryan stays if he comes within 7 points of a win against the Fins. He’ll get a one-year extension and providing he limits the team’s losses to single digits next year, he’ll get a new 5-year deal.

  74. mogogo1 says: Dec 27, 2014 12:00 PM

The most baffling move Idzik made was keeping Rex for this season. If he fires Rex after last year, a move that would have roundly applauded, he probably buys himself at least another year or two as the new coach settles in and gets his system in place. But by keeping Rex, Idzik basically bet his own job that the team would get considerably better this season. It was a bad bet.

GS- which will piss everyone off, but if he gets dependable OC and takes foot slightly off pedal, he could be hugely successful.

He had Bucs headed in right direction and worked well with Dominik on player personnel.

2013 Bucs were +10 on turnovers
    2014 Lovie Bucs -10

If he can’t get Winston he can trade for Glennon (who would be high #2 if he was in this years draft).
GS’s public personality leaves much to be desired but he is a smart football man and tireless worker that needs to learn from mistakes.

Currently this is not a destination job that will attract “bigger names”…this will be his (last) opportunity to prove himself as NFLHC and he will do everything he believes will make us winners.

I know there is lots of speculation about his micro management and he needs to lighten up, but I prefer coaches that are going to leave it all out there despite fan/media opinion.

Mark Dominik gave Michael Clayton a 5 year, $25 million deal to be the fourth receiver in Tampa Bay.

He also overpaid Eric Wright and Dashon Goldson to underperform.

Finally, he pulled off one of the worst ROI trades in NFL history by trading the 13th overall pick in 2013 for Darrelle Revis to spend one season playing zone on a 4-12 team lead by Schiano Men for $16 million.

If you wish to continue to get it pushed in by New England and Miami, by all means, hire the guy.

The lost irony in all of this is that the Texans had to bring in a consultant (Dan Reeves) because Charlie Casserly couldn’t do his job when he was GM there.

“The most baffling move Idzik made was keeping Rex for this season. If he fires Rex after last year, a move that would have roundly applauded, he probably buys himself at least another year or two as the new coach settles in and gets his system in place. But by keeping Rex, Idzik basically bet his own job that the team would get considerably better this season. It was a bad bet.”

I thought the Jets last GM search was based on the candidates having to keep Ryan in place as the HC?

Should have fired Ryan three years ago.

Ryan isn’t the Jets problem. It’s the GM’s who’ve been the Jets problem.

Teams should seldom dump the GM and coach at the same time. Replace one at a time to find what the real problem is. It’s just like repairing a car. You’ll never know what the real issue was unless you repair it one part at a time.

Looks from here like Jon Gruden signed that big commentator contract a bit too soon. Otherwise he could step into another situation like the one he had in Tampa. Grab up Hoyer when the Browns let him walk, and use the first two draft picks this year on CB’s Then next year, move up for your QB and be ready for a playoff run by your second season.
